As well as relief it could be the new bass has jumbo frets on it. Death to jumbo frets.
I missed that. It's very possible the nut isn't high enough.
My touch is in between light and heavy, not particularly one or the other. I fancied trying flats anyway, so I'll likely go ahead. Truss rod adjustment terrifies me. I really need to find my measuring tool before I attempt any adjustments though.
There's very little chance of doing any damage. All you have to remember is follow 1 simple rule: If anything you're adjusting gets stiff and hard to turn, stop and try turning it the other way or check with others that what you're doing is right.
I'd be interested in reading this while laid up.
Sent on to Badass

If you can film yourself playing and post it here we can [s]probably[/s] possibly tell you more. You don't need to film your head, just the bass and your playing of it.

What do you need to get that "killer slap" tone?
Grangur replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in General Discussion
Agree to some extent but when I am playing live all I can hear is the tone from my bass and back line and this is the tone that I crave. Got some good basses so guess it's just the strings and amps to sort!
This might be a silly question, but have you recorded yourself and played it back? After all, you're standing right over your bass and hearing the acoustic sound. Your audience are hearing the sound. Maybe if sounds ok out-front? -
As for the setup, I can't find my measuring tools but it hasn't been adjusted since I got it so it should be around Fender's standard measurements.
I read this as - "not set-up ever except by the luck of whatever the factory chucked it out with." I never actually measure the relief. Take the bass on your lap and fret the A string at the 1st fret. Then while holding the 1st fret, use your other elbow to hold the strings down at the bottom of the neck, near the body. Use your "elbowing" arm-hand to then tap the A string at the 12th fret: does the A-string have any space between the string and the 12th, or is it slap-bang laying on it? Laying on it - release the truss-rod an 1/8 turn and repeat the exercise. If it's got some space there, that's good. I like it about 0.5mmi-sh, but it's not critical as long as it has some space. If the relief is ok, then we need to take a look at the string height... String Height. At the bottom of the neck - 20th fret(?) get a pound coin and push the coin under the strings on-top of the fret wire. Can you do this without the string resting on-top of the coin without the string moving up much? If not, adjust the string heights at the bridge saddles. Try to adjust both screws on the bridge to keep the saddle level. Pick-up height. Fret the E-string and the G-string at the 20th fret and slide the pound coin on top of the neck pup and see if you can do this without the If not - adjust the height of the pup, by adjusting the screws on each side of the pup. Repeat the pup adjustment for the neck pup. This set-up works for me. you might want to use a pound + a 2P or something, but it's an easy way to start. Let us know how you get on.

This looks a really interesting bass. More, closer-up pictures would help your sale. Also, on a mobile, folk can't see where you are. So it's useful to tell people where you live. Also, as you live in Germany, folk in the UK (most people here) would like to know if the price includes the carriage to the UK. This bass is really tempting, but I really shouldn't be buying more basses. GLWTS

Surely if you buy one on mail order, you can return it if it's not to your liking?

Have to agree with all of the above (with the exception of the red P bass: you're on your own on that one). I also have GDS - Guitar Disposal Syndrome. I have 5 basses. My playing, as far as traditional bass playing goes, sucks. work prevents me from committing to being in a band. Most of this week I've worked until at least 10:00 at night. So I can't be arsed to get playing along to CDs/MP3s because, with no band to play with as and end result, doing that would be like doing "it" with an inflatable woman. So I play bass while sight reading. It's ok. I like the sound of the basses and it's a way of doing something I can enjoy. The problem is I get guilt feelings at having basses sitting there and no hope of gigging. So all the time I'm reviewing if it should sell this bass, or that one. Then I put them up for sale after a "bad" session. I'm then certain it's going... until i have a good session with it...

Got mine too. Many thanks for the heads-up. I tuned a bass and it's good. It struggles on B strings so i resorted to the Korg tuner. I then checked the other strings. It's about 1/4 tone out on all notes. Not sure if I'd bother. Or am I too fussy?

I've got a copy of this if anyone is interested.
My basses are £2k Warwicks down to Squiers and a £75 Westfield P. My playing style and our setlist don't involve beating the crap out of them. If it did, I guess I probably wouldn't have spent the daft money.
My guess is the OP hasn't spent that kind of money on any instrument and can't imagine doing so either. If he did his view might be different too.

Would anyone like to read this? I don't know if the original book is still about, but I have one.

(UK only, PM me for prices to send to other places) This bass has great versatility, but as a non-gigging bass player, I need to cull the collection. I'm looking to make some space and release some cash from the collection Thank you for looking.
Looking forward to seeing it (positively, I like relic'ed )
IMHO relicing is interesting when it reflects genuine use and reflects the passion of the owner in their playing the instrument. Otherwise it's like driving your car fast over a newly gritted road to make that look roadworn... IMHO
Having something relic'd is a straight red.
^^ But each to their own.
yeah, based on the above i'd like to provide an addendum to my comment: If you call an absolutely obssessively focused detailed setup (truss, relief, intonation, strings selection, etc.) 'babying' then i'm 200% guilty. I don't really care what happens to the paint work - either way. Playability and tone are everything to me
Exactly! A flight case is ok, but rip out all that mamby-pamby padding stuff!!! Just think of the ding and scratch opportunities you'd miss out on. Actually, why not keep a handful of pea-shingle in there as well, for good measure? Ok, TBH I look after mine and can't understand anyone who doesn't. That said I do have a slightly roughed up Corvette. Strangely I enjoy having one that's been around the block once or twice. But I would still be a bit miffed if my others got dinged

Overwater is made in the UK by the good folk of Overwater. Overwater by Tanglewood are instruments made in China, under license by Overwater, but the good people of Tanglewood.

If this falls through I'm off to Bristol mid next week.

Hi there Good people of BC, AGES ago I bought an FS-6 from a store. There was no packaging and no instructions. I couldn't get it to work as an A/B switch and thought I's being thick. I let it go for ages and tries again this last weekend. I've come to the conclusion that the thing is faulty. The onoff of the B channel works ok, but the A is dead as can be. Well, it's well and truly out of warranty I guess. So being a dab-hand with a soldering iron I thought I'd get it open, check the socket etc and get it working. There can't be much wrong. So I removed all the screws on the bottom and I can't get the bottom off. So I removed all the screws on the top and still no joy... I've slid bits and pulled bits and nowt seems to give much. Does anyone here have any experience in getting into these things? Do you know, if I get it open will I be any better off? Any other tips? Many thanks Rich

This is probably a mis-use of this thread, but blow it! I had the privilege to try some of Jez' basses on Sunday. They are truly remarkable. Jez is a modest gent with a great talent for working with wood. I really enjoyed playing his 5-stringer. It hangs well, the reach to the 1st fret isn't too much of a stretch and the sound is great. Many thanks Jez. It was a real pleasure to meet you. Thank you. I would have no doubts about dealing with Jez any time.

Isn't it the same in the video as well? Even during the bass solo they will show the guitar strumming a few chords.
ahpook: "I've never come across it except in Internet forums" - being a new bassist that's the only place I've heard it too, but on BC & elsewhere when plectrums are mentioned there's a fair amount of snobbery - do a search yourselves if in doubt - though happily not from the respondents to this thread.
I've just come back from the Herts Bass Bash - a BC event. Lozz did a comparison of pedals; using a pick. Others used a pick too. Not a word was said against Lozz or anyone else. Do what works for you. Those who you might hear making noises about picks don't know what they're on about. Some folk simply like the pick tone. It's actually not my thing. I'm not so keen on the tone. The choice would be good though, but hey! That's life.
