You can add Chris Squire and J. J Burnel to the list of pick players who've not done so bad. I can't play with a pick. The envy here is killing me!

Can only agree with all who've already posted. Many thanks to all for a the day Louisa and I both had a great time. Excellent to meet with Andy and Jez. I'm sure all we southerners are really appreciative for those guys making it down to our event. Their work is even more inspiring when you see it in the flesh, plus they're really cool guys too. See some of you again soon Rich

We've got group test of them going on today at the Herts Bass bash. So you might find we have some useful information for you later.

SOLD: Tune SWV4 'hot slapping' - now only 200£!
Grangur replied to juliusmonk's topic in Basses For Sale
Very glad to hear that - it deserves a loving home! This one is just as good, but with a different sound palette (high and low frequencies are centered at different points compared to the Bass Maniac, and it has the mid cut switch). The perfect companion if you are up for it! Forgot to mention: the brass nut design is also impressive - and adjustable
Isn't that an early Warwick Just-a-nut? Interesting bass though. -
I'm getting GAS for a short-scale picolo bass. Does anyone have one? Or just a short scale I can try?

We had that last year!

I used DPD this week for my second time of using - second time of their failing to collect on the agreed day too. Normally I use UPS with no problems, but DPD is a no-no from here on. I always book through Interparcel. It's not them, they're simply a booking agent. It's DPD who're rubbish.

A number of folks here are saying they use both volumes on full. I've found that this gives lower output than if you back one volume off a little. Am I missing something?
-
joking aside, you will find there are 2 types of pot available these are Linear and Logarithmic. It's really down personal preference, but i prefer the linear ones. Log has a lot of the adjustment all up one end of the turn of the pot.

Should bands (in name) carry on after large lineup changes?
Grangur replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
I was also surprised to see The Beachboys have a 50th anniversary tour, about 30 years after they split up. Isn't that like me and the Ex-Mrs G celebrating our 30th next year? -
Should bands (in name) carry on after large lineup changes?
Grangur replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
The thing is though orchestras play the exact same thing near enough, notes, timing etc since they were invented. An orchestra is made to play original pieces pretty much exactly as intended. The original composer written the piece for any orchestra to play. The conductor be it someone else or the original composer only has so much say from what is written. Where other music has many more variables. Not saying classic music is boring or doesn't have a difference between conductors or orchestras as it does but it does have less variables despite having more people playing the piece.
Not entirely correct. I used to think this, until I married and got educated. Different interpretations of classical music can be very different as the orchestration changes. The conductor is also a key factor. In essence you're correct though; the sound is only effected by a few key people, such as Arranger, Conductor and first violin, or other solo instrumentalists. -
Dodgy Elixir Nanoweb strings bought on Ebay
Grangur replied to EmaTheMirror's topic in Accessories and Misc
"If it looks too good to be true, it probably is" But if it were me I'd pass on all the info to Elixir. Funny how they don't copy Legacy or Fender strings... -
The Scott Whitley website says 7lbs or 3.2Kg. Interesting that yours is lighter. Apparently the mahogany version is also lighter, though no weight is given. I was hoping for under 3Kg, but I don't think that will happen with ash.
Basses vary in weight. You can't avoid it, its in the wood. So, they might give out a higher weight on the site as folk might whinge about it if they ordered a bass and received a heavier one.

I am looking for a double bass player as a replacement for a Trio
Grangur replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bassists Wanted
" we play is a "vintage " revisitation of Rock/pop classics". ...and you dive in after 1 rehearsal? Presumably you get more than 1 rehearsal to get into the playlist? The ad says Brick Lane, but they play in SW? -
The squier VM Baritone Jazzmaster uses the exact same neck as the Squier VM Bass VI (I have both and can confirm this) So I imagine you'd have no problem using the Bass VI as a baritone with appropriate strings.

Depends which Baritone tuning you want. The general standard is 28" scale for B and 30" scale for A with the appropriate strings. I have a HB 28" scale baritone guitar and even with the heavier D'Addario set (14 - 68), I still think the low B and E strings are a bit floppy. However I favour a 52 for low E on the guitar (and 56 when tuning it down to D) so my tastes might not be typical.
I just came (late) to this. I found this article that you might like to read> http://www2.fender.c...aritone-guitar/ I like the idea, but I'm no pick player, so I'd like to know if it's realistic to play finger-style? BTW, BRX, thanks for the great review.
Ok fairy nuff. I am not familiar with the Wilburies stuff and that song and the fact they don't (didn't) have a regular bass player inspired me to post this.
It would be cool to hear/see what you do with it and how it sounds. Music is art. Nothing is ever "wrong". Their line up is seriously guitar-heavy though isn't it?

Don't know if this will help but Mrs G is a pianist. She's a Roland fan. We recently bought a Juno for travelling with. She's enjoying that. What you need to look for is proper weighted keys. Regrettably you won't get that new for anything like £175. But don't forget, keys are as personal as a bass is to you. If it's not for you, then the player needs to go out and try a few. Try www.piano-warehouse.co.uk/. We went to the west London store and they were really good for letting Mr G try loads and take her time. As you say, you will struggle to find a good, down to earth "pianistchat.com" style site.

The general feel of the song that I get is a harp back to the 50s-60s. Wasn't this a time when bass was underplayed? Wasn't it McCartney and others in the 60s that took the bass forward?
