If you're a God praising person, I'm surprised at you using the term "Blimey". The origin of this is from "God, blind me". Isn't this taking the Lord's name in vain? Sorry, but I know my poor old Mum would have been deeply offended.

Elixir Strings; Excellent Customer Service!
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've updated the title on this thread as I have to take my hat off to the great folk at Elixir. A long time ago a mailed Elixir and said I was disappointed in the set of strings. It was a few days later that they appeared to settle down, or was it my ears? No idea. Anyway, a few days later i got an email from them saying "sorry to hear... very unusual etc, etc... and today we've sent out a new set of strings. If you want to send us the old, faulty strings we'll replace them." Well, I'm totally chuffed with them. They've got my continued loyalty. They won't get rich on the proceeds, but top marks from me. I feel quite guilty really. So I thought I'd give them a plug. -
Thanks for the replies guys, after having a think I'll probably not bother. It just seems silly to chop up my bass. It already has upgraded pickups in and does everything I need it to.
Wise move.
Yep, done all that. Did the sound improve? Marginally. Was it worth the money? No. Initially I'd replaced the weak Fender pickup with a Bartolini P which was an immense improvement. After a couple of years and coming into some cash I decided to go further. If the Barts were so good I'd I add a matching J pickup and active electrics. Chandler guitars in Kew did the work and the fashioned a new scratch plate the lot. Very good work on their part, but. . . . the sound was different with the J but (IMO) not substantially better than what I had before. If I could turn the clock back I'd just stay with the Bart P and not bother with the rest of the work I had done. In this case it wasn't money well spent. My advice is to get the best set of P bass pickups you can find, then (staying passive) replace the current pots and resistor with better components and play them for a year before you change anything else.
You're so right. I've come to the view that when both pups are "on" you can hear both, separately; not as one sound. So, where one pup sound crisp and clean. 2 sounds mushy. Keep it as it is and experiment with pups. I've got a SD Quarter Pound set if you want to try them?

Using your picture there, I would measure the distance as 432mm. Don't forget the point you're measuring to is the breakpoint where you're bending the string over the fretwire, not the place where you put your finger. Yes, as Dad says, it's very possible that you might need to move the bridge up a bit

Doesn't sound like Monkeys, though to me. But, I guess it never will.
Maybe I could cut out a shape from an old hardboard panel door and pretend it's one of his. You know how rough Jabba's builds are. ....I bloody wish
Well you could veneer it. It'd almost be the same. That bass looked magic. I'm not envious in the slightest.... much.
Hi, All I know I will be an out-of-region interloper, but I'll be at the bash too ... Look forward to seeing you all there Andy
That's great! Looking forward to meeting you there, Andy. It's only a shame we won't also get to see Jabba's amazing recycled door that was also at the Midlands bash.
Cool look, but that's got an action and a half on it hasn't it?
Yep, Mrs G limbo-dances under that. Actually it's up on evil-bay right now. It's got 38 watchers. Maybe, with some luck, 1 or 2 might just be folk actually interested in making a bid; not simply watching for the ride. (btw, I have paid my dues here and decided against selling in the market place, as it's not the sort of bass that sells here) -

I take it you've tried spraying contact cleaner into the pots? Jiggled the wires to try to make the drop-out happen (or come back) to order? Just thinking it could be easier/cheaper if you can find the cause. -
IIRC a TV ariel type connection.
And the prize goes to Mr BRX!. It was a coaxial socket. It's not the same as a tv socket, or I'd have made a cable to connect to the original socket. The later models moved the socket to the pickguard. I did think about drilling a hole in the 64 pickguard to take a Jack socket. But the depth of the body isn't enough to take the length. (Careful here this is a family thread) -

Dad, neither is this to be honest. (Good to play) It's a trip down memory lane, it's been interesting. I can really get grovin on it, but it doesn't sing. At the time I thought £40 was over the top. Nice to hear it confirmed. Thanks. -
Nice warm fuzzy thread, thank you. My first bass was a "Satellite"-branded sunburst/Rosewood/blocked n bound Jazz copy I bought from McGrane's in Leeds for £50. It ended up on fire in my garden. A friend spotted an identical one on eBay last year, and I suggested it was not a good deal. They wanted some money for it.
Thanks, I took the neck off on this, mostly to find out if it truly had no TR. The owner of the original one I had asked me for £40, back in the day, if I wanted to keep it. On my money that was a fortune for a paper boy. I was surprised to see it's actually got a serial number and date stamp on both neck and body. -
Your first bass is way cooler than my first bass, have fun with it
OMG!! Your beginnings must have been "interesting". I was reading on another forum a thread where some guy was talking with envy about how great it must have been "back in the day" when you had to save for weeks to buy a record and having to struggle to find it on sale. He really has no idea. -
I told a guitar playing friend about this, he's picking it up tomorrow he says thanks for the tip.
You're welcome.
Not you?? Just round the corner.... Must be hard to resist..
It was certainly tempting. I don't gig. I'm not in a band. I have 4 Warwicks and a Westone.. It's hard to justify growing the "herd". It's hard justifying keeping the herd, to be honest. -
Dear Friends of this parish, I have a confession to make.. I lifted my first bass from under my bro's bed. I was about 16 and it was in the 70's. It was a 1966 Vox Clubman. I gave it back when my bro's friend wanted his bass back. Fast-forward to 2016 and I bought a 1964 Vox Clubman from Evilbay and did it up. It's now fitted with a 1/4" jack, new strings and the frets are filed smooth at the ends, rather than the serrated ends that they were; akin to a "bread-knife". I got it for a fair-ish price. The cost of the work was reasonable. Doing this has been something like settling old ghosts and a learning exercise. These basses don't have a truss-rod. It has, apparently 2 steel rods in the neck as reinforcement. The neck is as flat as a die; no radius to the neck. The necks were made of sycamore wood, by G-Plan - the furniture company. The original pots all work after being sprayed with contact cleaner. The pups are good and the tone is amusing when you play it. I can't see me gigging it, but it's been interesting to do it. Will I keep it? Hmmm.... not so sure. If it was THE one I had back then I might have kept it. That one was in great condition, but it was 45 years ago!

Have we all become wimps or is it a sign of an ageing population
@Grangur , Don't you help with your band mates gear then , just carry your own ??
Yes, I have, when in a band. If I were in a band with the OP I would help him too. I'm only making a point. Maybe BCers do over do the weight bit. Maybe that's because many here are aging rockers with knackered backs. If I'm coming over as a troll, I apologise. The only point I would make is when I finish the day job I'm usually tired. If I then need to go and rehearse or gig, I would favor light weight gear unless lack of weight would have a serious impact on things. Sorry guys. I'll but out. -
Have you told that to Mesa Boogie, Ampeg, Orange et al? Not that anyone buys that old crap now :-)
I wouldn't buy it, but I suppose weight is a feature of some equipment. Like all features some may like the item for that feature. Others won't. Isn't this thread similar in nature to one on a petrol-heads' site bemoaning that some folk want to know the MPG before they buy a car? Or if you don't like that one, maybe moaning about some folk not liking non-metallic paint. You like it, I might not. Vive la difference, I say. Good luck with your Ampeg, Orange et al. You like it, that's great. When you want a hand lifting your gear out, don't expect me at the stage door, but I wish you well.
