1.
Ooh, thanks! They're pretty but i must admit i don't want to spend that much...! I've just been bouncing around ebay and have a Really Looks a Lot Like A bass filtertron coming for 30 quid... I'd guess replacing the pickups like for like would probably be the ones that are about £7.50 a pair so...
Seriously, I'd start with strings. Even if you simply fit some you've been using on another bass where they're about ready for a change. If you're short of cash and don't have strings to use like that, PM me your address and I'll send you some half decent strings that'll do you for checking. I'm down in Plymouth in a week or 2 maybe I could have a look if you'd like someone to take a look.
2. Don't like ads wi no pics. I'll be driving back home, going near Doncaster on Friday.
3. One step at a time. 1 - Setup. (Done already?) 2 - Strings 3 - Pups. There's a great guy I'm Spain hand winds pups and does some custom pups too. I don't know his custom prices, but the standard ones aren't exactly expensive. Jlguitars.com
4. Your luck is in!! I run a course of evening classes. For the right money I could do a presentation at the Herts Bass bash

6.
Thinking about setting up a space for "items for sale" but need to know whether it's going to be viable. If anybody is bringing something to sell can they list this against their name. Thanks Mick
I can kick this off with: Warwick Thumb BO 5er Hipshot Bridge 4 String in chrome. And here's the orderly queue of folk interested, of which I'm certain: [b]1. 7.
Hey not sure why but the links don't seem to be working it wants me to login, but doesn't let me register any ideas?
Sorry for that. I've gone through them all now and they should all work now. If you have problems on any of them, please do let me know.
8. Does anyone else have any other comments about meeting on Wednesdays? Also, if we're going to schedule these, once a month or once a fortnight?
9. Good post. Sounds like you'll have more use for it now. Interesting to hear about the change in the tone control response. Thanks for that.
10.
I'd definitely be interested - you all know what level I play at! Very keen to improve and it'll be good to have other points of view from my regular lessons. I think I've linked to Grangur above ok - let me know if I need to do anything else.
Ahhh.... so it's you!? Ok. I'd guessed it was someone from SBL Academy. I'm happy to help get it together, but please can you PM me when you link to me in Google? Let's aim for doing a first meet up online on Wednesday week; 13th April. Nobody here's superstitious are they?
11.
good point well said.
This. Plus, if you're looking for an investment get an ISA. On the matter of heroes playing Fenders I think this is all sad really, because I'm sure most choose Fender because of its serviceability and easy replacement, not for it being a great instrument. But that's just my humble opinion.
12. Strangely, I've stuck with the strings (being to tight to simply ditch them) and they seem to be better now. No, it makes no sense to me either.
13.
Frankly the action on that bass looks fine to me. If you wanted it lower you could shim it I suppose. But I'm not a huge fan of an action so low that the strings look like they're painted on the neck.
This. I get the idea that the OP could do with some quality time with another local BCer. But we don't know where he's located.
14.
Still here
£40 for MEC pups and still no takers? I guess they're the wrong shape for most folk. If they were Jazz pickups they'd be long gone.
15.
Why would they get a refund from the manufacturer? It is B stock. Someone evidently kept it, used it, then sent it back. Unless I have missed something.
Sorry, you clearly have inside knowledge of Thomann's contracts with suppliers more than I do. Your trouble is you made it complicated by trying to save more money than they're prepared to take off. My guess is you're over estimating Thoman's margins. You've a lot to learn about commerce. I wish Thomann luck on this one.
16. If you're not too sure about working on a bass, IMHO you'd do well to keep clear of basses with neck problems. What's your situation? Do you have a bass already? Are you trying to find a cheap bass? Or are you looking for something to do work on? If you're looking for a low cost, good first bass, that's something different that we can maybe help you with.
17. What you're missing here is that 10% may not seem much to you, but if you send it back they will get a 100% refund from the manufacturer and they get to sell a good one to you as a replacement. So all they're saving is the return carriage. So I'd send it back if I were you.
18. Do you have any pics of the bass? Maybe some close-up pics of the hi-end frets? If the frets have lifted, which I doubt you might need a re-fret. It's possible it just needs the frets dressing and a set-up.
19. The set up of the strings is measured by setting the distance of the string to the top of the last fret. Well, that's what I do. The last fret is curved in line with the radius of the neck fingerboard. So, you then need to set the height of the pickups from the underside of the strings. With a long pup, you set this using the G and the E string only. In this case you have a split pickup. So its possible, to have the D and the A to be the same distance from the pup as the E and G - this is done by having the pick up sections wonky as you have on your bass. It makes sense. It works. Enjoy your bass!! Go make music!
20. You could always contact a Basschatter near them an ask if they can go in and take a look and do the deal. It's no guarantee of it being 100%, but it's better than sending money to a total unknown. Where is the bass located? Edit: I see your Wanted thread. What sort of weight is the SR500? Clearly you're wanting something as light as possible. Maybe a (semi)hollow body?
21.
I'm a pick player and play fairly hard. I've had Elixirs on a variety of basses over the last couple of years and they last for ages. The strings on my Lull sound pretty much the same as they did when I put them on last September/October, fresh and bright. Quick question. Is the Streamer a bolt on?
No, it's a through neck. Interesting you should ask. The bass on which they are ok after 9 months(ish) is a bolt-on. I have had Elixirs on the Streamer in the past and they were ok. That said, haven't Elixir changed their strings recently?
22. I've been asked the dimensions of the pup. The pup is 85mm wide, by 25mm at the widest point. at the narrowest point of the bass (apart from the radiused curved part) it's 18mm wide. The whole pup is 15mm high.
23.
I've had two Hohner B2 5-strings, identical other than the pickups and one being active. Quite a chunky neck on them both of course, the passive one sounded quite thin in comparison to the active one. So necks may be a variable but I haven't found it myself. My extremely slim-necked Warwick has a good deep growl that's identical to the baseball-bat-necked Warwicks, so I would say that's two empirical results which show you haven't looked at the right slim-necked basses.
OK, so I need to get out more..
24. This is curious if you ask me. Styling isn't at its finest though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Framus-Triumph-Electric-Upright-Bass-Circa-1950s-/131771900470?hash=item1eae37a236:g:HxEAAOSwEK9XArIK
25. I bought this recently for a bass, but I sent the bass back. So the pup is surplus to requirements. I've connected briefly to another bass to hear what it sounds like; and it sounds immense. It comes as you see here, with all the packaging The windings look like waxed string and the magnets are Alnico; as you can see above in the picture. The price of £29 includes postage in the UK, but I'm happy to send to other countries too; just mail me for a price. I'll be sorry to see this go, as it's full of charm that's seldom seen these days, but I don't have a bass for it right now. I'm based near Stansted Airport btw, if you'd like to come and collect. Thanks for looking. Richard
