Just watching this recording from 1982. What a damn near perfect bass sound. Immense. Shame his presence in the video feed is minuscule compared to the audio feed though.
Isn't this the "norm" though. I've lost count of the times I've been listening to a good bass solo while the cameraman is focused on a guitarist playing very little. (for example)

Faulty Pickup selector switch on Ibanez AFB200 Semi Acoustic
Grangur replied to basskit_case's topic in Repairs and Technical
That looks very doable to me. I'm sure that wouldn't take long to fit. Small fingers could be an advantage. -
Any Fender, tried plenty, overpriced and dull
Same here. Peavey too. Can't gel with either of them.
Not a big deal. If your not in a band it probably means one of 2 things; 1. You don't want to be in a band 2. The type of band you would play in just isn't available or realistic. Blue
My work commitments make it almost impossible to be in a band. Roll on retirement, by which time I'll be old and too knackered to do it. I guess it's all in the roll of the dice isn't it.

Grandad, I can't agree more. My favourite make is Elixir. I like the non-zingyness of them. The trouble with finding strings we like, for most of us at least, is we buy some random make because we have some unexplainable affinity to the sound of the name, or by some other reputation or something, and we try them out. If we like them; great. If we don't like them we generally put up with them for a bit, because we don't have the spare cash to simply write off £30+/- and dump the offending strings. OK, we can try to sell them on BC, but it's all a lottery, especially when you start getting into stringA sounds great on a P-bass, but not what I want from the MM or Jazz, etc.,.

I once bought a set of 5 Rotosound flatwounds from a local store. They were the only flatwound 5s they stocked. I fitted them and the G string snapped when getting it up to tension, so I took the strings back. 1 month or so later I eventually got an answer from Rotosound - they gave me a replacement G string. That was it; after a month of waiting for some kind of response. I'd have expected that if they'd allowed the shop to change it on the day, or within a week. But a month? Then, when fitted, the tension was so great it was like playing on fence-wires. Never again.

None grab me. No. 4 especially. I image the writer/guitarist will know exactly what he (thinks) he wants the bas player to be playing, except that he can't play it himself, so he needs you to play just as he tells you. Or [s]maybe[/s] I'm just a pessimistic cynic P.S. This is probably why I'm not in a band.

There was me all ready to offer you my standard advice to all: "Don't by Rotosound". I guess it's each to their own. Good luck with them. Pleased to hear you've found strings you like.

Simply all scales are Modes. It becomes a different Mode when you play the same note tones but starting at a different note. Eg starting the CMajor on the D; DEFGABCD is a Dorian mode scale.
Thank you. In my mind I keep thinking that a good instrument is nicer and easier to play. You've just put it into better words and a nice story too! I've never had an SR but always liked the look of them. I'll have to see if I can have a go on one!
Get a nice, clean used one and if he doesn't take to it, you can sell for the same price tickets bought it for.
I've just bought a Squier P bass and it's got a satin finish on the neck and fingerboard. What's the best thing to clean and maintain these boards/necks with? I did read lighter fluid.
Lighter fluid might be more "Rock n Roll", but the effect is no different from White Spirit. Better still would be a slightly damp soapy cloth, then dry it off with a towel, but where's the fun in that?

I had some lessons with Mike McGibney. He's a good guy.

Fwiw I recon you have some good advice here. I only use my rig at home. So it's a constant situation for me. I'd suggest you either change the fan for a quieter one, or change the amp. It's also worth thinking about it the amp is under any guarantee. Changing anything will end the guarantee, even if you fit a better fan. It might also make the amp harder to sell.

Polishing frets/Rosewood fretboard cleaning
Grangur replied to titchfieldrelic's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sincere thanks to all of you who posted. However, I'm surprised that so few (5 Basschatters) commented, bearing in mind it's something which most, if not all of us would need to do from time to time if we cared about our instruments. I have to say I read almost everything there is to read on the subject (yes, anal, I know!). I decided to take my time doing the work (to a 2007 LE StingRay, BFR Sterling and Fender Custom Shop Jazz). After removing the strings I masked the board with electrical tape (not masking tape) to expose the frets and very lightly rubbed the surfaces of the frets with a very fine emery paper to remove surface oxidation. The frets were then polished with silver polish several times and buffed. The tape was then removed and I used Music Nomad F-One oil to clean and dress the fretboard using lint free rag. Each guitar took about two hours. I worked on one guitar a day. And I have to say the frets and rosewood boards now look absolutely stunning. I bought and used a Planet Waves headstand to support the guitar neck. Makes it all so much easier. I certainly wouldn't attempt to do this work without one. Sorry to those of you who gave me advice which I didn't take. It seems that Lemon Oil is not the right thing to use for rosewood fretboards, nor wire wool for frets, although the use of these materials is very popular. I suppose it's what makes this chatroom so interesting - so many differing views.
I appreciate it's a little bit late now as you've done it, but you shouldn't need emery paper or such, because that's a bit harsh. It will wear away your frets faster than needed. It's good to hear it all went well though. With regards to the responses, I think many of the readers round here are more interested in feeding their GAS than much else. At least, that's my perception. -
Polishing frets/Rosewood fretboard cleaning
Grangur replied to titchfieldrelic's topic in Repairs and Technical
I really need to polish up the frets on my Wal. I've only had it a year and the frets look like it's been gigged for decades... They look brass to me, what should I be using to give them a bit of a clean up?
An angle grinder or wire brush wheel will bring them up a treat. After a couple of goes it will become fretless and you'll get a whole new sound. Seriously though, Brasso will be fine, or Autosol. That's what I use on my Warwicks. -
Yeah - He's never rang my bell, either. Clearly a great player, but there's something about him that feels a bit sparkly and shiny for a lot of the stuff he plays. Someone like Willie Weeks always seems to do it better. Clearly I'm wrong, though :-) I'd like his house.
What he's clearly doing right is that nobody notices him. He makes the "star" sound great and doesn't attract attention.
So I went along to Wunjos on the strength of this thread, and came away with http://s1128.photobucket.com/user/h4ppyjack/library/Basses%20CURRENT/Fender%20Precision%202015%20Sandblasted So why did I buy it? Was it the great-looking body and lustrous colour? Was it the light weight and impeccable neck? Was it the range of tones on offer - not two but three? Or was it the chance to own a basic, simple instrument that requires a 7-word name. Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you the Fender American Standard Limited Edition Sandblasted Precision.
That's the one. Nice bass there Jack.
Strad copies have been around for ever, but are never referred to as Strads, however well made and good to play. They are copies. My point is if you buy a jazz built by anyone other than Fender, it's not a Jazz Bass, it's a copy. When I bought my first bass, I bought a Satellite Jazz Bass copy, not a Satellite Jazz Bass.
Isn't this kind of name transfer the same as when you "Hoover" the floor with your vacuum cleaner, or ask a friend to pass the "sellotape", or cover a cut with a "band-aid". Most folk see this as free advertising. I guess it iss possible that you could refer to your Dyson vacuum cleaner as a Dyson vacuum cleaner copy, if you want to be accurate about it?
Cheers guys Gave it a setup yesterday and gigged it, even without an amp and straight into the desk it sounded mega. Not bad for a backup I guess! Right... onto the next project!
Your stand-by is more premium than the best bass I own! How the other half live!
Debora Killings on a 6 string Yamaha.? she's like Janice on steroids. She is so good at improvising on the bass while singing.
Things like this make me laugh when I later read folk saying they can't handle the P bass neck because they have small hands.
Janice Marie Johnson bass, awsome ! https://youtu.be/90-5fpLdb-c
AND she sings and plays at the same time. (Not unique in this, but it's not widespread)
