1.
Ah, I remember reading a story where they'd been in the studio, Wyman had gone off for lunch, came back and found the bass had been recorded and wasn't happy. I could easily have got that wrong though
That sounds believable. From reading Bill's book there was always a bit of a game going on with royalties. So if they could record bass and cut Bill from the royalties from the record sales, they would. It's amazing that band has lasted so long. That said, Bill's no longer there, but I believe Charlie Watts doesn't sit at the top table in the Stones either.
 2.
Not with the slurry and buff method, Grangur. Hence my question to Goblin. You can't easily use the slurry/buff method for a stained wood, but it is ideal for natural wood. It produces a silky smooth, satin finish that is fully protective but still feels like real wood. I think it would be perfect for this.
Sounds good. How do you do that? I'm guessing you simply put on a thin coat as I would normally with Linseed? I once saw a gloss Warwick for sale and I don't think the gloss was helpful to it selling.
 3. It's looking great, but doesn't Tru-oil give a high gloss finish? Have to say high gloss wouldn't be my choice for a Warwick, but each to their own. I'd use boiled linseed oil, which gives a satin sheen. I guess the advantage of Tru-oil is it's non permeable - in the same way as a varnish.
 4. They also don't have to give any warranty on the parts either. No cooling off period returns as you'll probably invalidate it's "New" status as soon as you screw it into another part.
 5. Hi Lee, The best resources I've found are www.Studybass.com www.Scottsbasslessons.com - it's worth joining the accademy. It's loads better than his free lessons on youtube. www.Musictheory.net Is there anything in particular you're looking for?
 6. Have a bump for some great sounding pups and a good guy to boot. That's to say hes a good guy as well. Not that I'm suggesting to stick the boot in, if you know what I mean. Sort of... er.... yeah.
 7. I just recieved Craig's fretless Ibanez ATK. I've played a fretted one before and liked it. This one s really cool. Beautifully packed and in wonderful condition. Couldn;t have hoped for better service. Many thanks Craig.
 8.
Sold? I'm definitely interested if not! Tobie
Hi Tobie, Many thanks for your interest. I've decided to paint the body and keep the neck and do it all up. All the best Rich
 9.
There are few bands that you can genuinely say you have no idea what to expect. Off the top of my head, the only one I can think of is The Cardiacs.
Queen. This was, of course, helped by the fact that all 4 of them wrote their music.
 10.
It was 2009 and I was 33. I'm telling you I was a lazy so-and-so until I joined a band. Then I HAD to get good, or get lost.
OK, I stand corrected
 11.
I joined a band when I don't even think I could play a whole song through. You're never going to be "ready" enough, so just do it
When was this? How old were you? I can imagine that if you're 16-18 and half the class at school are looking for a band who'll gig their 18th Birthday for free, or for free beer, you can get away with it. Iike Sausage, above, I'm 56. I've never gigged. I started bass when I was 50. My repertoire is negligible. Most bands expect a 56 year old to be seasoned musician. It's fine thinking you can busk through with roots and 5ths, but unless you can get the right genre on the play-list you'll struggle to make covers sound right, surely? You may be ok with 12-bar blues, but funk is going to be something of a challenge. My day job has me getting up at 6am and I don't get finished until 8-9pm some nights and I can't plan when those nights are going to be. So rehearsals are always going to be at weekends; when most bands want to be gigging.... now it's me feeling like I'm going no where! And that's why I play weird stuff (for a bass player) at home.
 12.
I find all this sort of craftsman stuff is a lottery ... when I try this stuff, it costs me money and I never seem to win anything. On the other hand, watching someone else doing it properly (like here) is hugely rewarding.
This ^ If this was me, I'd still be trying to get all 4 boards of the body straight enough to touch from end to end with no light between them.
 13. It's god to hear that you're going to give it another whirl. Being told by a loved one "you're useless at that", is a real killer for your confidence. So you should take that into consideration when you're weighing things up. I first picked up a bass before t'internet and had 2-3 lessons from a guitarist who didn't really know bass. Bass fell by the way-side and a good few years later my then new wife saw the bass I had, coaxed me to play a bit and on the strength of a few wobbly bars of Smoke on the Water informed me I was useless. I never touched it again for 24 years. What a waste of time that was. If you doubt your own ability, try going out to some local gigs and see how often you see a bass player and think, "I can play better than that". It'll be more often than you imagine. BTW, if your gf thinks you're not much good, how come she's taking lessons from you? No need to answer that. Good luck
 14. Hi Stamford, You think 30's late? Phur! You're a meer child! Welcome to Basschat. Good luck with the learning journey. Cheers Rich
 15.
There used to be a basschatter called Milty who had his own bass string website. He no longer contributes to this forum (wonder why?) Can any one tell me what the site was called and if its still trading?
I mailed Milty about this. He didn't own the site. They were friends of his. He stopped having anything to do with them. Don't know what happened to him though.
 16. I'm in a similar position to the OP, in that my schedule doesn't really lend it's self to being able to book lessons. Yet without lessons you can become aimless in your practice. From time to time I've struggled with finding what to do next. I don't have time to be in a band; time again. So, much to the disgust of some folk here I spend my time playing by sight reading "normal music". It's not what folk normally do with a bass, but I enjoy it. Maybe you can give that a go? Also, to get lessons when it suits you, have you tried a trial 14 days of the Scotts Bass Lessons Academy ? That's what I use. The resources there are 2nd to none and you get to have live online lessons-Q&A sessions with folk like Ed Friedland, Anthony Wellington, Steve Lawrence, Danny Mo Morris. Ariane Capp. If you'd like to know more about SBLA PM me or ask questions here.
 17. I enjoy sight reading and can read fairly well. I can't really say "Yes, sight reading is no problem", but I equally don't take 5 mins to read 4 bars. The dots are fine, but it's Codas etc that take me time to work out.
 18. We don't appear to have started any comments here on gear we can/will bring. I have a Barefaced One10. The tone is very different from the 12" Midget I had. I'll also bring a MarkBass LM3 but if you have any other amp you're welcome to try out the cab for yourself.
 19. Probably the best thing you can do is go to a good store and try a few and find out what sound you like. Think about what music you want to play, do you want distortion and dirt, or a clean sound. Many of the smaller amps will sound more metallic. Hartke all seem to sound metallic to me, which is good if you want a certain sound for funk and slapping perhaps. go for a more "woody" sound, but each to their own. Zoom multi-fx boxes are great too. You could find a Zoom B3 is worth looking out for, used if you can get one.
 20.
Could be a loose fret somewhere?
Or a fret lifting from the fingerboard on the E side. Does the bass play well finger-style, with no buzzes? - If so, it's likely to be technique, rather than the bass
 21.
Cube 30 for bass ?
I just bought one. It's really good. The output sound is louder than I expected from a 30w. It's also got some effect built in. Great tone too. Mind you, mine has a Celestion speaker in it. But they're really solid bits of kit. It's the 2nd I've had. I regret selling the first one I had.
 22. Go West always just sounds like a total drum machine backing to me. Am I alone on that?
 23. Many thanks to all those who've added their names to the list so far. Don't forget though guys; this is an online community. While meeting up is great, don't forget to post about it in the forum and promote discussion online first. No Mod has said anything to me about this, but I don't want this to stop discussions in the repairs forum. If we did my personal fav section of Basschat would go. Thanks again guys.
 24. What's wrong with the Nanyo? If it's not a rude question. Other than being tired of it, maybe?
 25.
Yes, indeed; it's to help out with cable rustle when handling, I think, but should be kept well away from the plug tags by trimming back severely.
Or maybe it's like a screening between cores.
It's also described by one cable manufacturer as "semiconductor", which it clearly isn't however it's conductive PVC with carbon particles. If it is not stripped back to clear the centre conductor and touches the jack tip wiring the cable will exhibit the sort of problems that the OP is having.
Many thanks for this really clear info.
