[/quote] I think this is a prime example of someone using a luxury provided by their location. It's great for him and others living, for example, in the central north cities. This is great for the seller. The frustration here is, of course, for the buyer if you live in some of the more off-the-beaten-track places. In those cases you can be reading all the threads only to see the bass you're desperate to buy, but you can't have it without a 4 hours drive. Maybe we should develop a code to put in the title? We all understand "FS:". maybe we should replace this with "CO:" for collection only? WRT the BC marketplace. I've come to the conclusion that the only basses that sell there are Leo Fender legacy brands and boutique stuff, plus one or 2 other, such as Ibanez. I put up a Westone once and all I got was some plonker telling me that the lines in the wood were massive gaps in the pocket and over all it was in terrible condition. Personally I've come to the conclusion I can do without the hassle. Right now I've got 5 basses up for sale on Ebay. They started at 99p and I'm sure they'll sell for, what is right now, a fair price. But then I guess the aim of the manufacturers is to drive the market to being in the position of us all thinking there's no point in buying secondhand when for so little more you can get a brand new one.

Zawinul, it's a fact of life that your chosen favourite supplier, Fender is a mass market manufacturer of instruments. A reality for such companies is that if they are going to make a model of bass they need to know they can sell them in considerable numbers. You've said yourself that active fretless is a bit of a niche weapon of choice so Fender making one simply isn't going to happen at a low price. You simply need to get over your prejudice against anything that isn't a Fender. Besides, why not be honest about your prejudice and not attack all the other perfectly good instruments that other folk enjoy playing?

I've been buying screws from WD Music in Kent. They seem ok, good service too. I feel your pain though. The head of many screws are simply far too small.

This is an interesting build, that's for sure. Good luck. It's a bit late now, as you've done the filler, but for future reference, you normally get dings out by "sweating" the wood. What you is lay a damp cloth on top of the ding so water soaks into the grain and heat the water with clothes iron, or soldering iron. The wood swells up and takes the original shape. Have you thought about how to clean the bridge? Seeing all the rust I think I'd try Coca-Cola or "Daddies Sauce"' if you can still get it. That would eat the rust.

The key to finding an old one is to look out for the TR adjustment being at the heel of the neck. Both of the Encores I have have heel adjustment. My impression/perception is, I think the old ones play better than the newer ones. That said, the one in this thread is older than the pearl-white one that I've bought since. What I mean about "how well they play" is to me some basses simply sound "mushy". That is to say the notes don't sound clear like a bell; there's a certain mush in the sound. This may not worry some folk, and if you're in to metal or simply want dirt in the vibe, then why should it. Yesterday I was playing about with a number of basses comparing the clarity etc. What I've found is when I've played a "mushy" bass I've also found you can bend back the neck with your hands. If you find a bass that plays clear like a bell, you also find you can't bend the neck. So much for the folk that say there's nothing in the wood, huh? With my basses, I've found the following: Encore PJ - bendable - mushy Encore White P - not so bendable - quite clear. Marlin Slammer P - between the 2 Encores and sound quality is mid range too. Westone Thunder: stiff-ish neck - clear sound Warwick Corvette - neck as stiff as hell, sound is clear as a bell. Answer; you get what you pay for, I guess.
