I just bought an East Preamp from Mike. It was a nice easy transaction. Good coms. Many thanks, Mike

Another good guy to look up is Steve Lawson. Going off track a bit; Steve is left handed and plays right handed. I was in a Q&A session with him and he said he found slap n pop really hard to master. It made me (another leftie) feel much better about my own pathetic efforts.

At the recent Herts Bass Bash we had a presentation by Andrew of D'Addario. Bluejay will be posting a video of it when someone has improved the sound. What Andrew told us was that compliance isn't to do with flat or round, but it's down to the core thickness. Thicker cores give less compliance. How you find out the core thickness is of course another matter.

Do you know, I was just thinking, I've never bought from Gary, or sold to him. I've met him on a fair number of occasions. He's a good guy. I just thought I'd say that. I guess this feedback thread speaks for itself already. But anyone can buy or sell with confidence.

Withdrawn: 1952 Fender Precision Replica Blackguard

This is strange. I keep trying things like changing strings and wiring the pups straight to a jack, and nothing seems to change drastically, but the more I play it the more the treble seems to come into the sound. Really odd... all I can do is keep playing it and see if it gets better.

Filling holes left when changing tuners
Grangur replied to tedmanzie's topic in Repairs and Technical
I'd go with Ikay's advice. I also so happen to have some waxes of various shades. PM your address and I'll send you some. You won't need much. When you get the wax it's really hard. Roll it round in your hands for a few minutes and the warmth of your hands melts the wax until it's kneedable. You then fill the holes, like you would with plastacine. The wax re-sets and it's all done. -
Have you tried T-Cut the stuff for removing scratches from cars? Otherwise you could sand it lightly and apply a new coat of lacquer

Advice on fretless with narrow string spacing, 4/5 string
Grangur replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
I tried this in a shop but really didn;t like the feel of the bass or its sound, its all personal in the end!!
I don't own mine anymore which says it all really. But it's worth exploring, and you had. So alls good. Good luck in the search. -
The old maple/rosewood topic - but with results from the Herts Bass Bash
Grangur replied to Lozz196's topic in Bass Guitars
What's needed is a fully blind test, with the basses played by robots. Then we'd get a robust answer. No good having blinded players playing the basses, they'd be able to feel the different textures of the wood. However, if the purpose of this is more entertainment than answering the question, a test like this is fine.
Come to that is a judging panel of 30 a big enough market sample? Also, as we're all bass players are we representative of the listening public? It was fun and most of us were surprised at what we heard and found ourselves voting for; me included. I owned the Rosewood P bass and voted for the Maple neck P. But like Lozz, what do I know? -
Newbie advice please - moving to the US - should I get a new bass?
Grangur replied to Lardy's topic in General Discussion
Basses are cheaper in the US. If you're coming back, leave the Ibby with a mate as you go and buy a nice bass in the USA. Depending on voltages and things an amp could be a bigger hassle than the bass. Maybe buying something like a Zoom B3 or a Vox Amplug would be a good idea and practice with headphones? Or buy a cheap amp in the USA on Craigslist and sell again before you come back. -

If it makes you feel better. I've been there too. It was a cheap East German vintage bass with the old style truss rod where you have to bend the neck and wind the TR to take up the slack. I didn't know this and excess force happened and.... "bang". There we go, one broken TR.

Difference between string-through and bridge stringing?
Grangur replied to Naetharu's topic in Bass Guitars
Leo Fender must have thought it made a difference, as even after it had been removed on Fender basses, through body stringing was included in the final design of MusicMan basses. I think he left it out on G&L though. I can string through the body on all my basses and I've tried on 2 of them. I didn't notice much difference in sound or feel, but then my senses aren't that finely tuned. There are no down sides to through body stringing and only you can decide if you discover any benefits.
Maybe the reason for taking it to MM is that it sells instruments. -
The old maple/rosewood topic - but with results from the Herts Bass Bash
Grangur replied to Lozz196's topic in Bass Guitars
I always thought Ebony was the happy medium on bass...not that I've owned one for a while now. I think people that claim there's no difference between Maple and Rosewood are in denial; Rosewood is darker sounding and Maple is brighter, but I wouldn't say I prefer one over the other.
I thought that too. I was there and was surprised to find its the other way round. -
I've seen a guy iron the neck to get the fretboard off. Not for the fainthearted. Is it a through-neck or bolt on?
Through neck or bolt on is a good question. Also I would be curious about, if I can get it apart, what will I fi d and can I fix it anyway? Maybe Warwickhunt can help here. Otherwise you could ask Warwick support. Their prices won't be low. As an owner of similar basses, how did this happen? Any warnings or silly errors? Taking it as read here that you're no fool, so what you did is something we all can do.

Advice on fretless with narrow string spacing, 4/5 string
Grangur replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
Dear Bass Chat i'm a new user, old bass player! Used to own a Wal fretless in 80's sold it (biggest regret of my life!), now looking to get another decent fretless but my budget at present not up to £3000-3500! At present I have a Squire vintage fretless with Bad ass bridge, Its ok I guess but passive, not very inspiring, so want to treat myself to a decent bass up to £2000 (hopefully less!) Do any of you peeps know of a bass that has very fast neck with narrow string spacing 16 -16.5, lined fretless, active, I'm looking for punchy tone, like a Wal, but with decent growl, don't want muddy sounding crap, very crisp please!!? It would seem to me having done research that 5 string basses usually have narrower string spacing ANYWAY,? so that could be a solution, strung E,A,D,G,C, don;t want low B, too low for me! So I've looked at: Status - wonderful narrow fast necks, headless, lovely, pricey, graphite neck = nice punchy tone with good highs £2500! Sandberg - difficult getting any info on string spacing, and what does it sounds like? £1500 Roscoe- Looks and sounds nice expensive, not sure about spacing > £2200 Mayones - Look and sound ace, spacing? £1600 - 2000 Overwater- does do narrow strings, sounds very smooth but is it punchy enough? £2200 Musicman - as far as I see none in the UK, so can't fond out much about these. £1600 Spector - Dittp Musicman, are these any good (ca get a Euro for £1500) So my question is has anyone experience with any of the above as fretless (or otherwise)... I know there is no substitute for a Wal and may even end up getting one, but is there ANYTHING out there thats what I want (can you read my mind) I want quality, playability, light small body, fast action, narrow neck, smooth as butter with zing!!!! Any good suggestions other than above? Thanks for listening I hope you can help!!!!!
The ESP LTD B-205 SM-FL Fretless 5string Fretless has a really close spacing, nice smooth fast neck and good action. They sell for £400 too.
