A little more investigating: The screws for the pups are very tight. This is surprising as I would like to hope Fender would have pre-drilled the holes with the right sized bit. Checking pictures from the Fender website the pups should have 2 pole pieces per string. These have only 1. This is a matter of style and design of course. But it does mean its not as untouched as I first thought. I'll have to take this apart and check it out. As PlungerM says, check the contacts and maybe ID the pups.

Hi there, I've just become the owner of a 1999 MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe bass. When I first plugged it in the result was silence. So I fitted a new battery. There doesn't seem to be a way of playing in passive mode. No matter, I guess. With the new battery the output still seemed low when the EQ is "flat". If I use any boost it then gets really boomy. I've set it up using the settings on the Fender Support web site, but it still seems either boomy or quiet. The strings all look really new and the pups are at the right height. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Hi How much would it cost to post? Thanks
It would cost the actual cost of the postage/courier. I would normally use Interparcel UPS. For the "normal" service this would be £11 plus any insurance. I'm probably going to be traveling down to Exeter and Plymouth in 3-4 weeks. If that's any help to you though. -

Lord Haig in Hertford, anyone played there recently?

Gary Mac plays there with his band defunkt. They're a general classics covers band. -
I think Yamaha started making basses in 1961 and the Samurai series were certainly not copies of anything that ever came out of Fullerton.
You're quite right. I got the date wrong. If you look at the history of their motorcycles, Yamaha launched their first, a copy of a German motorcycle, in 1961. And you're right about the basses. There are no similarities at all between a Yamaha an a Fender http://cdn.mos.musicradar.com//images/features/bass-week/cool-classic/cool-and-classic-basses/yamaha-ab-cutout-460-85.jpg
For my money, the problem with Yamaha instruments is that, when they first started appearing in the lates 70s/early 80s, they were essentially all copies, both guitars and basses. As a result, the mind set was (and, to my mind, remains) why buy a copy when you can have the real thing (be that a Fender,. Gibson etc). They have undoubtedly moved on but, a bit like Skodas, it remains difficult to shake the historical rep. People who came later are less likley to recognise that history and just hear/see what they hear/see, clearly a more sensible approach. So, in response to the OP, the 'best' Yamaha would, in many people's eyes, be starting with a compromise. Unreasonably so, I am sure, but there you are.
I'm with Bilbo on this. Back in the 70s and 80s, at the beginning of the time when we saw massive growth in the Japanese economy through their investment in manufacturing the Japanese lead the world in reverse engineering. Yamaha have their fingers in an incredible number of pies. What they do have an impressive skill in is copying.
This. Then change the pickup.
Should you also check the neck profile first too? Roger Waters would have originally had a good, solid vintage neck. (On the bass that is) This affects the tone and gives a good deep tone. Knowing modern manufacturing processes, you could well find the tribute Sig basses will simply have a modern, thin neck that simply looks right from a marketing perspective.

I've got a Roland 100w Cube if you're interested? It's in great condition, and includes effects that can be controlled on a foot switch. I come down to Devon occasionally, so maybe we can arrange to meet up. If you're interested I'll think about the price.

I have problems with my ears from time to time. I can't use olive oil, but there are other bi-carbonate of soda drops out there. I also use one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/AcuLife-Ear-Wax-Removal-Syringe/dp/B000SOJXGA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433343665&sr=8-1&keywords=ear+syringe+kit They're worth their weight. Good luck
Whereabouts are you based, sir? :-)
I'm within a few minutes drive of Stansted Airport, 20 miles south of Cambridge, 20 north of London.
Hiya, what is the weight on this one?
It's 3.85Kg that's 8.4lb in old money. Thanks for the interest. -
The bass I'm selling here is a "Squier by Fender" Precision with PJ pups. It's 12 years old, but in great condition, with just a few scuffs. The neck is the fine Jazz neck width and the whole thing is solidly built and just been set up. The strings are fresh and giving good sustain. For those looking using the mobile version, I'm in East Herts, right by Stansted Airport, about 28 miles south of Cambridge, 25 north of London. The bass weighs 3.8Kg, that's 8.4lb in old money. I'll happily ship this to you by courier at cost, or we can come to some other arrangement - I travel about the southern half of the country a fair bit. Thanks for looking
I used the BB-code version of the Flikr link and selected the url from the middle of it with ".jpg" at the end. Pasted that into the "Image" tool and ... barrrr... dummm! There you go. Have another bump Great amps btw. I'd love the case off you, but I guess you wouldn't want to sell separately, would you?

What I also like about oil is the finish is it's so easy to fix any dings as well. So much easier than lacquer. Great finish on this one, as always. -
I too would like to ask here if I may. If the OP's amp power is greater than that of the cabs, is there any danger that the amp, if on full volume, could cause damage to the speakers? Also does this situation get better/worse if only 1 cab is connected?

How can anyone abuse a '65 Fender like that? OK, so it's not the Mona Lisa, but no instrument deserves that. Not even a very bad Fender. Question: Would it be cheaper if he'd not [s]wrecked[/s] improved it?
