But based on all the logic and assuming all the basses that come out of Fender's factory are made by machine, have the same pup placement, same strings, same pups etc, why don't they all sound the same? I guess they could all be set up slightly differently - action etc? Going on this, I wonder how many basses have been ditched and moved on for want of different strings and a set-up? PS - Haven't we been here before?

[/quote] Doesn't it also go to show that when buying an instrument online, no matter the value, you don't know what you've got until it's in your hands and plugged in. It also makes me think that when building a bitsa most of us are in the same position: You can buy all the parts and do the build, but until it's plugged in you don't know for certain what you have. It's all like buying a ticket in a raffle. Sometimes you win, sometimes you move them on. Mrs G says to me about all the basses I've owned. I dispute that. I say I've only "owned" half of those that have passed through my hands. Sometimes within the first 5 minutes I say "this one's not staying". Brand names mean nothing except maybe the higher the price, the better the chance of it being a keeper.

I'm a 5. I have 5 basses, plus one I'm moving on. Thanks to a curiosity caused by the Japanese Cray thread, yesterday I bought a Westone Thunder. I played it late into the night and this morning I can't wait to get back to playing That bass again. I love my others too, but this really ticks the boxes. So until I see a double P Westone I'm GAS-free.

If the producer doesn't know what sound he wants, how do you know what to get? Maybe he should spend the time twiddling knobs after all. And if it does take him 3hrs what does that say about him and his ability to produce?

You can get it off using a blow-lamp, But doing that without leaving signs of darkened wood due to the heat can be a challenge.

That's a lovely colour!! What you can do to re-finish it could depend on what you find under the colour finish. If it's got wood with grain, then you could simply oil it. That would be easy and low cost.

Entwistle pickups have adjustable screws on the top. These affect the magnetic fields. If you have no treble try winding the screws so they come to the top surface of the pup or slightly proud. If the pup works when connected to the Jack then it is as I suspect, that you've wired the tone control wrong. Perhaps if you can post a picture of the wiring we can help you. You say all the control is up one end of the turn of the pots. This is because the pot is designed as a logarithmic scale. You could try changing it for a linear pot.

I've been using Elixir .45 on my Warwick. Then I bought a set of "Heavy" Elixir .50. I tried to sell them. No takers so I installed them on a new (used) Fender and found them not so much different on my Fender to how the .45 feels on the Warwick. Maybe this is all down to me and my insensitivity to the tension, but I have been known to find strings too tight in the past. If I were you I'd take them back to Martin and see what comment he has to make.
