In addition to pickup design and preamps as you mention, pickup placement, bridge design, nut type, neck-body join, and other factors could still easily produce differences in sound. IMHO the only thing that can answer this question is extensive double blind testing of different body woods, with all other factors held constant. It's easy to produce logical sounding arguments of all sorts of things that aren't true.
All true. But based on all the logic and assuming all the basses that come out of Fender's factory are made by machine, have the same pup placement, same strings, same pups etc, why don't they all sound the same? I guess they could all be set up slightly differently - action etc? Going on this, I wonder how many basses have been ditched and moved on for want of different strings and a set-up? PS - Haven't we been here before?
Agreed but the OP has identified as many have done that the greater the value of an instrument doesn't in and of itself, guarantee a tone or playability that is any better than a lesser value instrument... to the individual.
Doesn't it also go to show that when buying an instrument online, no matter the value, you don't know what you've got until it's in your hands and plugged in. It also makes me think that when building a bitsa most of us are in the same position: You can buy all the parts and do the build, but until it's plugged in you don't know for certain what you have. It's all like buying a ticket in a raffle. Sometimes you win, sometimes you move them on. Mrs G says to me about all the basses I've owned. I dispute that. I say I've only "owned" half of those that have passed through my hands. Sometimes within the first 5 minutes I say "this one's not staying". Brand names mean nothing except maybe the higher the price, the better the chance of it being a keeper.

I Just bought a Westone Thunder 1a. It's amazing. 2 days later I've found this one. I'm SO pleased I don't live near Bath. Someone buy it NOW please! http://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/bass-guitar-westone-not-used-for-a-year-natural-wood-design-one-string-loose/1115992703 -
This listing has its own thread already http://basschat.co.uk/topic/262688-oh-dear-all-the-talk-of-country-basses-has-not-prepared-me-for-this/page__pid__2781471#entry2781471 But I thought that comment on the condition was interesting too
I`ve now got the basses I both want and need. Sure there are many other basses I`d like, but I know I wouldn`t play them much, so it would be pointless having them.
Wow. Cool outlook!

I'm a 5. I have 5 basses, plus one I'm moving on. Thanks to a curiosity caused by the Japanese Cray thread, yesterday I bought a Westone Thunder. I played it late into the night and this morning I can't wait to get back to playing That bass again. I love my others too, but this really ticks the boxes. So until I see a double P Westone I'm GAS-free.
Generally P pickups have a higher resistance than J types so I would guess that the lower resistance is the J pickup. The combined figure looks right for the two pickups wired in parallel. Some basses are just louder or quieter than others.
+1 You can also check out the individual pups by disconnecting the circuit and connect each pup in turn, direct to the jack. Lovely looking bass btw

If the producer doesn't know what sound he wants, how do you know what to get? Maybe he should spend the time twiddling knobs after all. And if it does take him 3hrs what does that say about him and his ability to produce?
-
Hey welcome. I went to Lichfield once too! I remember it well. Greetings
-
If his worry about getting it is the shipping cost or risk about the courier can we arrange for other BCers to pass it along and get it there? Do you know where he lives?
-
I agree with Rob. Someone living near you could lend you a bass, especially if you need one that's not "your thing". Your profile isn't complete, where are you living?

I can certainly bring some Warwicks but Warwick don't ever make anything with a blonde neck.

Natural wood finish on a budget? Advice needed.
Grangur replied to Veganarchist's topic in Repairs and Technical
You might be in for a tough job removing what is probably a polyester finish. It might be better to apply a new solid colour over the blue (after suitable sanding).
You're probably right there. You can get it off using a blow-lamp, But doing that without leaving signs of darkened wood due to the heat can be a challenge. -

That's a lovely colour!! What you can do to re-finish it could depend on what you find under the colour finish. If it's got wood with grain, then you could simply oil it. That would be easy and low cost. -
smug bastard, I'll never learn double thumbing, why? because I don't want to
If you can't handle being smug at the same time. You can watch this vid where you can learn the technique on it's own. You can always add the smug grin later if you want to. https://youtu.be/U-N54p2YlQg On the matter of the thread: I can't slap n pop I can't use a pick I can't tap

Don't know if this counts; Victoria Wood's son Henry. I sold a Fender P on ebay and delivered it to the buyer. Victoria Wood opened the door and paid me cash after I'd waited while Henry checked it out.
That is exactly how I have wired in the p pick up,maybe just not use to the sound. As a test I reinstalled the j neck pick everything seems to be working as normal, sound has a lot more presents and more importantly there is a lot more adjustment available in volume and tone controls, with the p pick up fitted nothing happened these controls until the 20% of their travel, very strange. As far as the jbxn are concerned I think they exceptional value for money and because they so cheap it's a no brained to give them a go, I think you will be pleasantly surprised
Subsonic is right about testing the pickup by connecting it straight to the Jack. Entwistle pickups have adjustable screws on the top. These affect the magnetic fields. If you have no treble try winding the screws so they come to the top surface of the pup or slightly proud. If the pup works when connected to the Jack then it is as I suspect, that you've wired the tone control wrong. Perhaps if you can post a picture of the wiring we can help you. You say all the control is up one end of the turn of the pots. This is because the pot is designed as a logarithmic scale. You could try changing it for a linear pot.
Each half should have it's own pair of wires.
I've never found a P pup with more than 2 wires. They normally have one half wired into the other.

I've been using Elixir .45 on my Warwick. Then I bought a set of "Heavy" Elixir .50. I tried to sell them. No takers so I installed them on a new (used) Fender and found them not so much different on my Fender to how the .45 feels on the Warwick. Maybe this is all down to me and my insensitivity to the tension, but I have been known to find strings too tight in the past. If I were you I'd take them back to Martin and see what comment he has to make.
