I'm a lost cause... I even get GAS for instruments I can't play, I was looking at cellos online last week.
Really? Can I insterest you in a set of bag-pipes? -
Thanks Rich. I'll check out sites you recommended. John
You're more than welcome, John. I'm a subscriber to scottsbasslessons academy. Take a trial 14 days on this. It's worth a look. On first reading the price of $168 (about £100) sounds a lot. It's actually, when you think of 1-2-1 lessons being about £25 an hour, this isn't a lot for the 100hours+ you get from the academy, plus all the other stuff.

Welcome to Basschat. Good luck in learning. The guys here are great at answering any questions you may have on the journey. And the journey is easier if you remember it is a journey, there is no "end-product" or cut-off date. The process never stops. Just keep at it and don't give up. While you're waiting for a DVD, you could do a lot worse than use the following: 1 - studybass.com 2 - scottsbasslessons.com 3 - Find a teacher here on Basschat. Good luck Rich

Funny you I should see this today of all days. I've got all I need. I have. I know that. I've got a Streamer Stage 1. I love the sound of that and it feels good. The ideal fretless companion to the Streamer; because the neck is an almost exact match, sits next to it in the rack; a Streamer LX Fretless. This doesn't get played much, but being new to playing bass I have that masochistic fascination that gives me a love/hate fascination for fretless that needs to be massaged from time to time. . Corvette; the throw-arround bass. Great for tone variation. (As if the others arn't) Fender P - I had an itch for a P. It was affordable and I'm not disappointed. And now.... well I have an itch for a 5er. I know it doesn't makes sense. It's like needing to climb a hill; because it's there. Well I saw this bass, beaut of a finish, affordable and it's a 5. So Mrs G and I are about to drive 200 miles to go and get this thing and meet up with another BCer. It won't break the bank. It'll be a project as I can do some other work to it. It's in need of TLC.... Theory: Our GAS isn't helped by the poor range of basses in shops. I go to my "local" and I feel nothing. No curiosity, nothing. It's un-inspiring. I don't feel a NEED to try anything out. If I want to try out the "sweet things" in bass I have to buy them. Anyway, I must go, time I hit the road. -
I've never had to deal with crackly pots until recently; all three pots on my Peavey crackle when I turn them. Having never cleaned pots before, what do I do? Do I have to take the pots out and spray them from the front?
Contact cleaner spray comes with a long, thin tube That attaches to the nozzle. Use this to poke into an opening in the pot cover and spray about to get it to wash the inside parts. After this then keep winding the pot back and forth and do it again. That usually works.

Really nice bass you have there. Thanks for sharing

sanded my maple neck to bare wood - what oil to seal it?
Grangur replied to tedmanzie's topic in Repairs and Technical
Top tip with tru-oil is to sand wet, using c 1000 grit wet n dry and using the tru-oil rather than water, to create a slurry. Then wipe it off and buff it immediately. When it's dried, repeat a couple of times - you will end with a silky smooth, satin feel neck that is to die for..
Many thanks for the tip. -
GONE - Bass Guitar Magazine and Bass Gear Magazine - GONE

Hi there, I'd be interested. I get to your area sometimes during the working day. Is it possible to collect then? Not sure yet when that would be, I'd need to work it out in my diary. If this sounds like all to much hassle, no offence. -
Verb bought a MM pickup from me. All went well for a smooth transaction, fast payment by bank transfer. Nice and easy. Would happily deal with him again. Cheers Richard

I know nothing about DB. (Why am I here?) Geoff Chalmers is a great guy though. You can take a look at www.discoverdoublebass.com for some starting off pointers.
I think it looks ok. It's a copy ffs, good on him for making it unique!
True. I do wonder though, if a bass ever got quite that tatty after 30 years of genuine regular use? Also, isn't personalizing an instrument really about making it that way for yourself, not for selling? I wonder how long he's kept it since doing the improving.

It's worth 25 as a project. It's not worth 25 postage

He was a true inspiration. RIP

I'd have thought you should earth each section. All you need is a single thin wire going under them all, so it's not a big deal.

So, friends, are you looking fro your next bass-build challenge? Want something to get stuck into? Here's a bass I bought as it is and I don't have time to work on, or the resources to do the main part. In the most part it's as good as it looks. It's a Spector Performer. They sell for about £275 - 300 ish and this is in great condition..... Except it's previous owner tried adjusting the truss rod, and wound it so tight he wrecked the hex-head on the adjuster. In short it my need a new TR or someone who has greater resources than I do to fix it. What it does have going for it: Solid wood body, with some modest weight to it; in almost mint condition. 2 soapbar pups Pots with nice push-on knobs. 60mm pocket. Bridge - not BBOT or Hi-mass, something in between. Here's the full description and the price! http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Spector-Bass-Performer-4-Bass-Guitar-Red/JLF All yours, as it is for £35 Here's some links for more pics: http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/Grangur/slideshow/BC-pics/Basses%20for%20sale/Spector http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/Grangur/BC-pics/Basses%20for%20sale/Spector/story

At the risk of going off topic here; how much do you actually use/operate the pot? When you think of how little they're used, in my case at least, their life they give isn't impressive compare to the volume knob on a hi-fi for example. Maybe to extend their life we should give them more "exercise"?
The ones that look like they are made of salami?
Like the Harley Benton JB? Very much so.
