1. Just went and collected a bass from Steve. He's a good guy, very welcoming and made me 2 cups of tea! Cool! AND he drunk one of them too... such service can't be beaten. Thanks Steve. See you again sometime, I hope. Cheers RIch PS the bass was well priced and just as advertised. I only wish it was mine.
2.
Adjusted for inflation that $500 should now be ~£1200... Shocking.
Her management's argument would, I'm sure, be something like "think how that will look on your CV". Let's face it, Barry Manilow or Barbara Streisand may not be your thing, but would you turn the gig down if you can get it and afford to live on the income? I bet backing any of the "big" solo names isn't so much fun either, night after night.
3. All we can do now is wait and see if we get a cancellation email.
4. @ Discreet. Yeah. I do realise that. I'm only envious
5.
We still need to confirm activities and seminars but plans include: "The fretboard challenge" - in a similar vein to last years blind P bass challenge we'll be running a blind seminar where we ask those attending to choose their favourite from a pair of similar basses - the only difference will be the fretboards - Maple or Rosewood?? Is anybody able to bring either P bass, Jazz, MM Rays and one other (to be decided). I'd like to throw in a red herring so has anybody got one of the above with a graphite or exotic wood fretboard?? ...
So Wenge neck need not apply huh!?? As for the pup configuration, PJ as a suggestion?
6.
My 2p is that accepting the limitations of one main instrument and maximising the potential of your muscle memory is more beneficial, on the basis that swapping instruments usually means having to think about what I'm doing to a certain extent rather than it being second nature. I'm sure it is possible to get a high level of familiarity with multiple instruments, but practice time is too valuable and life too short to spend it relearning how to do stuff I can already do when my time would be better spent working on things I need to improve or can't do yet.
+1 I used to give in to GAS and acquired a range of different basses. Now I just stick to one make/style and (try to) stop GASing. The hard fact of life is there is no bass on ebay/Thomann/Gumtree/BC, that will give you the instant transformation to play like Wooten/Pino/Jaco/etc. Get over it and keep plugging on the same bass. The minor difference in tone between basses and pup configurations wont provide any magic ingredient that will make that much difference. (If only I could convince myself of this too.)
I don't practice scales. If I can play everything I need to play on my basses, that's fine. I notice the difference between P and J-type neck sizes, which doesn't bother me.
Funnily enough Chris Squire says he doesn't practice scales either. I wonder why that is? Maybe THAT's where I'm going wrong?
7. If you go to Warwick.de then go to Warwick support, you can check out the serial number of your bass and it will tell you all the information about the woods, finish and equipment. Nice basses here btw. Thanks for posting
8. I can appreciate Phil's point about cost. This is sub £100 cost however, so not too bad for me right now. Thanks AT, for your thoughts. My only concern now is I've read of Harley Benton instruments being a bit on the weighty side. But hey, let's see how it works out.
9. I live near Stansted and will be driving through Bristol on the 22nd April if that helps.
10. I'm no master on this subject, or any subject for that matter, but I've read a good book on this. What you need to do is: 1 - Plan your direction - have a series of goals in mind as you practice. Not "end-goals" but "Key Progress Indicators". Know what you want to achieve and work towards it. Examples might be to be able to play a 12-bar blues riff reliably at 100bpm. Then throw in a tripplet or 2, then up the target time to 120bpm. 2 - Enjoy the journey. This isn't about passing your Maths GCSE, this is about getting to a workable level in the techniques you want to play with and then get better. This is more like learning to drive; you might pass your driving test, but you're still learning - as others have said above. Enjoy the journey of the small goals and "victories" on the way. I've been at it 4-5 years and I've still got a long way to go. A book I like is Blues Bass - John Liebman. Blues may not be your style, but it starts off simple and works up to some good solos and helps develop techniques.
11.
That's what the current Mexican standard logo looks like, the machine heads are right and the serial number is on the back of the headstock as expected. If you were going to fake a fender, you wouldn't do that model (no offence to mexi standard owners) The listing may be dodgy but the bass in the pics is legitimate. http://www.themusicz...andy-Apple-Red/
It's amazing how it looks so much more legit with clear, pics with good lighting.
12. It's almost tasteful design too.. Shame I'm short of cash this month.
13. Thanks to you all for your comments. I can see this baritone either going on fleabay or back to Thomann. Of course I may love it and keep it, but somehow I doubt this. Damn this GAS!
14.
Not if you're planning to play normal guitar chords on it, no.
I feared as much. I guess I'll just have to learn to play properly.
15. Hi there, I was just crusin' on the Thomann site curtesy of a link by Mr Annoying Twit, of this parish, and found a Baritone guitar. Got really curious and watched a vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXQqjUFsM_c With this guitar on sale for not too much curiosity got the better of me and... .woops... "INCOMING!!!!" So, I've been reading a bit about these and there seem to be a few ways of tuning. A popular one seems to be B, E, A, D, F#, B What tunings do folk here use? Does it work well if you tune to B, E, A, D, G, C ? What do you guys think? Are they cool?
16. Nice bass, but my Wick fretless isn't for going anywhere. GLWTS
17. I thought by asking I might gain the view of others and learn. Seems I'm in the wrong place.
18. Sorry, I didn't mean to get personal. Besides I never named anyone. Ok I'm in the wrong. I stand corrected.
19.
Did you try the bass before you bought it?
No. It was bought and shipped. My bad.
20.
A decent suede backed strap sorts out most neck divers imho so perhaps try that.
I may just do that. As others here have said, some folk are also more susceptible than others to experiencing it as a problem. Maybe others didn't notice an issue.
21. Thanks for the thoughts, Gents. The problem I was expecting to work on was electrical. The bass isn't to my knowledge a usual candidate for diving, but it's a brand known for a reasonable level of quality.
22. Good day to you Ladies and Gentlemen of this Parish. I've recently bought a bass on here. It's one that has passed through a few members' hands. It seems it simply "didn't gel" with a few folk. It has a problem that I was thinking I would deal with. Most of the description was honest. The bit that seems to have skipped the attention of 3 folk in the writing of the selling description is the neck-dive. Looking through the Feedback threads; those buyers that gave each other feedback after the transaction all gave good feedback. I would think that when selling on BC to other members here, neck-dive is worthy of a mention. Am I over-picky here?
23. I fail to see the problem really. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but has anyone had a pickguard arrive in the post where Mr Postie has succeeded in folding it in half to go through the letter box?
24.
much obliged... although a Ten minute walk sounds fine unless it's tonking it down with rain then I may require assistance I'll bring a Wal MK3 6 String... Either my current one or the new ziricote one if it's built by then... and if Mrs C can be persuaded to attend / carry some gear I'll bring my incoming Peterbuilt Fretless Jazz. Very much looking forward to it.
Mrs G will almost certainly be there too. So Mrs C wont be the only non-bass player there. (Assuming Mrs S doesn't play bass, of course)
