SOLD 1983 Vintage Leo Fender G & L SB2 Jazz bass
Grangur replied to gary mac's topic in Basses For Sale
Forgive my ignorance, but can you confirm whether the two knobs are for volume and tone? I only ask because I seem to recall more recent SB2s had just 2 volume controls.
You're right, my SB2 has 2 volume pots and no tone. But that it also a PJ too. G&L must have gone through some strange changes in their model numbers. GLWTS -
Nice bass, nice set up there too. I hope you're all very happy together.

If there were more Pro/Name Bassists on BC ..
Grangur replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Nobody's mentioned Ed Freidland. Again his welcoming lasted about 3 weeks and ran to about 12 pages. He now gives live q&a sessions on the Scottsbasslessons site taking turns with others like Anthony Wellington. We do get a smattering of stupid questions though like how many basses do you have. I liked it when Anthony Wellington was asked about his EQ settings. He replied "I don't play $10,000 basses and correct the sound electronically". -
Other than the obvious, have you thought of adapting one from a long, correct size allen key? I have one you can copy, but it's not for sale. An engineering company might even have hex shaped rod that they could make one from.

Hi Frank, Welcome! We look forward to hearing more from you. Cheers Rich

Hi there, I've got a brand-new, unused set of the above strings. They're still in the packet/box etc. as seen at; http://www.amazon.co...=rotosound+bass Nothing wrong with them if you like Rotosound Nickel strings. The price of £x.99 includes postage. Payment by bank transfer or personal PP payment only, thanks. Cheers Rich

Go to http://THO.MN/RETRN then enter your account details and the reason why and they send an email with the address labels. I wasn't getting an exchange. But I think you should go for a "return" and then buy as a separate transaction.

I've just returned a bass. Under the distance selling regs it gets paid by the seller in the first 14 days. Thomann still accept back after 14 day, but you then have to pay the carrier cost of £15

Hi there, This is something I've found hanging about the place. It's an original programme/brochure from Blondie's 1980 European Tour. It's A3 in size. Not in mint condition, but it's certainly not bad. It's typical "fanzine" material, but great stuff if you're a fan of the era. In this there's also an interesting "family tree" giving info where all the members came from, ex-bands etc. Price includes postage - flat between cardboard sheets. £12.99 inc postage

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Grangur replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
My fretless 5-string acoustic arrived today too. It has a very small ding on the back at the heel of the neck. Other than that it seems great. I'm not sure about the strings myself. They sound very buzzy, like growlly, but bright at the same time. So I might change them for some Fender flats to see what the effect is. I've got the EQ with the built in tuner. Not sure about the accuracy though and the EQ control is next to useless, but for the money it's amazing value. It sounds ok acoustically, but better amplified. Good all round really. -
A couple of years back I had a first lesson with a teacher who told me to use 1-finger per fret in frets 1,2,3,4, with my thumb in the centre of the back of the neck. He went on to tell me, if you can't do that simple thing, then you may as well give up all hope of playing bass. I gave something (or someone) up, but it wasn't bass.

I've got 3 Warwicks that are all active. They all switch to passive with a pull on the volume pot. They also all play in passive mode without a battery. I doubt the Star Bass will be very different to the above, except the Star Bass may not play in passive without a battery - there's a load of LED stuff on the full Sig version that won't work without power. I also have a G&L that is completely passive. http://www.rock-gear...8&lang=1&&cur=1
Apart from a Hotshot for drop D tuning, not really. That being said, any suggestions for 'better' pots and pickups? John.
WRT pots there are cheap rubbish ones on the market, but provided you get the replacement from a reputable guitar parts seller, there's not much to chose between them. I get most of my parts from WD Music in Kent. You could change the pickups and get a e different tone. Some people here have their favourites such as Seymour Duncan QuarterPounders. What do you think of the sound of the bass as it is? Does it work?

Just bought 2 more books from Martyn. Both in perfect condition and for an excellent price. Martyn is a great guy, would buy from him again anytime, with total confidence. Thanks Martyn

Hey! Nice result on many fronts! Good bass to cut your teeth on in working on and at a good price too.

Looking good. This must be one of your easiest projects you've done in some time, but it's looking good. -

How to deal with a sticky gloss neck?

Jeweler's Rouge ; worth a try. What's the worst that can happen? -
It's always bugged me when folk get confused between the words "borrow" and "have". They're simply low-life in my estimation.

Have you got his home address? Maybe someone can go and read them to him and get this sorted

How to deal with a sticky gloss neck?
Grangur replied to SingleMalt's topic in Repairs and Technical
I find the same with glossy necks, my daughter squire jazz is great but it does slow me down and feels strange to me. You could try some wet and dry on it to make it satin. My daughter wont let me do this on hers which is a shame, however she has no issue with the finish unlike me, I think its my clammy hands.
If you use a (seriously)fine grain paper and polish up with beeswax, the look will be pretty much the same - nice and shiny. Mind you, don't use what Homebase and the like call "fine". That's not fine enough. You may need to get some from a more dedicated tool store. -
Chris Squire could play yours I no disgrace on a chinease squire affinity jazz bass and it would still sound great - its I the hands
I was thinking about buying a P. I think you've convinced me that no cheap P, with some replacement SDs is going to out-shine any of my Warwicks. Thanks for saving me the money... Anyone want to buy some Quarter-Pounders?

How to deal with a sticky gloss neck?
Grangur replied to SingleMalt's topic in Repairs and Technical
SG, the glossy neck is giving you a problem because there's too much smooooth surface in contact with your skin, giving you loads of friction. The solution is easy - reduce the amount of contact surface: what you do is get some really fine sandpaper or wire-wool and rough up the surface. You should use something like 1000 grit for this. Then when the job is done, get some bees-wax and polish it again to "appear" like it's smooth and shiny like it was. -
FWIW Anthony Wellington also uses one. To find out if a ramp suits/helps you why not make a cardboard one and fix it there with blue tack?
