A very common way to rescuea failing business is to "return the business to its core values". Fender was founded on the principal of marketing instruments that are affordable to the masses. (Fast food for musicians). It would be interesting if Fender did this strategy. To do it they'd probably scrap the Fender manufacturing and re-brand Squier as Fender. But how would this go down in the market? If they did I recon it would be dangerous for Fender.

I'd even question the age. Seeing the wear on the underside of the body; I'd expect more wear to be on the arm rest, not the knee area (if one was sitting). Other than that it's interesting to find a bass with such hard wear in 1 place, but nothing much anywhere else.... IMHO

I saw this on another forum and thought it worth sharing: A colleague bass player of mine was helping me to learn notes and when I asked about why he couldn't show me something wth tabs as well........ _____________________ Loose english translation - "Jeepers creepers (very hardcore untranslateable German swearing), whatever dumbkopf thought up tabs had his brain in a blender!!!! (Pulls out a handkerchief and wipes the foam from the corners of his mouth) Compare and tell me what is the difference." My short, abrupt, startled and spontaneous answer, "Tabs have four lines sheet music five and both have dots on 'em...... sir." "EXACTLY but my blind grandfather sees this with his walking stick. Warwick Star Bass Pro Series 5 string demo / solo
Grangur replied to 72deluxe's topic in Share Your Music
...I hope you don't mind the mild overdrive - I enjoy some dirt. I played along to Logic Pro drums and recorded DI, then reamped it through both a BBE BMax-T (some mild lo-boost and BBE processing and pushed mids) and also a SWR Interstellar Overdrive (blended to more DI, but with pushed overdrive, you can really hear it). I did this because instead of having a DI recording, when we play we also run through amps and cabs which colour our sound. But instead of micing up and irritating my wife beyond belief, I just put it through these preamps for some gritty colour.
Nice playing and great tone IMHO. For a "demo" I'd have liked to hear the bass in it's "natural" state - no OD etc. but thanks for posting; very enjoyable. -

New bass for around a grand.or keep what I've got.

Don't forget the amp is probably half of the sound. Maybe you could look at finding a better amp? Good bass & crap amp = crap sound Cheap bass & good amp = good sound -

Grangur replied to red rooster's topic in General Discussion
Keep the Squier and learn to play while you try out lots of basses. One day, if you're lucky, you'll find a bass that has a sound to die for and that £1k will be there for it. or.... you could join the rest of us on that GAS merry-go-round of buying and trying and losing money until you learn the difference is all in the fingers anyway. Your choice. -
In my collection of basses I've got 2 Warwicks and a G&L. My go-to is the Gear4Music LA. I got it on evilbay for £40 plus delivery with a soft padded case thrown in. Bargain! When it arrived it was unplayable. Someone had tried a set up, but it was no good. I whipped the neck off, fitted a shim, set it up and all was good. I entered it, as it then was, in the Herts Bass bash P-Bass head-to-head sound competition and it came 7th out of 12 basses; ahead of 2 USA Fenders. Having it back after the competion I've fitted a Hipshot bridge and SD pups. My views on the parts: Neck - can't fault it. It's a P bass neck, slim and well finished. Body - it's a light weight wood. It's fairly soft, so accepts dings more easily than I'd like. If I was to re-paint it, I'd sand down some of the shaping to soften some of the edges where your picking arm goes over. Mine is the "Sparkly silver". Actually it's got a bit of a green, tinge going on. It's not a real silver. Tuners - agree with Vinny. They're ok, but not the greatest. Bridge - ok, but not the greatest. Pick ups - more "metal" than my taste, but good. They certainly have more windings than some expensive pups I've seen. It's a great bass if you pick one up cheap, as a chuck-about bass if you don't want to risk damage to your Warwick. I'd probably prefer to have a Squier shaped body. I cleaned the G4M logo off of the headstock of mine, but then I'm a snob.

Selling a bass for more than you thought reasonable
I have an amp for sale on Ebay at the moment, I have listed at £100 start price I have been offered £500 in PX from PMT but they don't have the amp I want, I will withdraw it from Ebay on Saturday evening if it hasn't attracted any bids, I can't run the risk of it fetching nothing, I sold a Peavey Firebass head and Peavey Black window loaded 4x10 and 1x15 stack a couple of years back, the amp was basically new...I let it run thinking it would hit the £500 mark in the last few minutes...it didn't and I ended up getting £220 for the lot...the guy who collected it said it was the best bargain he had ever got....so I don't think it is necessarily true that items find their true value
Hmm... yeah. It looks like it's a dangerous assumption when selling amps. I've always found bass guitars are safe.... until someone else tells us another horror story. (Mods - please lock this thread ) -

Warwick Corvette Std - German Made - Active - SOLD

I used to have an ESP LTD B-205FL. It's an active bass. Can't be used in passive mode and it's using the batteries all the time that you have the jack plugged in. The pups on mine weren't fantastically powerful, but that might be me, or the setup. That's the bad side. The good side is the weight is good, not too heavy. The neck is amazing, nice and fast and the radius of the neck is very flat compared to many other basses. I thought it had good tone; although that is subjective and the eq was good. For the money it's a good bass. If you're into active basses you could do a lot worse. Comparing it to a Musicman, I think the tone isn't as "hot" as a Musicman. You should probably try before you buy. OR take advantage of the "distance selling" laws; got one mail-order and send it back if it's not your thing. Oh, and welcome to BC btw.

Have to say, I've never sold a cab and not sold many amps. Maybe this is because the number of punters looking at amp gear is so much lower. I did read somewhere that many folk READING basschat have one bass and don't own an amp. -

This thread is, like others on here, inspired by another thread. I just wondered if this has happened often. When I'm selling a bass on ebay I normally start it off at 99p and run it for a week from Sunday. This attracts attention to the bargain-hunters and you get a good audience over the weekend... not rocket science. Many do the same I'm sure. I believe most things find their "true" value. I've seldom sold anything and been disappointed. With the number of folk looking nothing on there goes as a real bargain unless its on the Isle of Skye on "collect only". I was once embarrassed even when I sold a real cr@p bass from the 70s. I'd had it in the loft for years. It was a Jap crap short-scale branded Eros. I'd googled it and found they were from Matsumoku. It was still crap. It sold for about £120. The new owner was messaging me that he was going to use it on an album... He was even going to send me a copy (he never did). Sometimes you win. Actually, if he'd swapped out the pup it could have been a really good bass, if you want a short-scale. What other "wins" have others had?
Going back to the OP, it appears to be a shop/business selling it so don't see any issue. I do appreciate the warning that it is not worth it and is being sold for way more than they paid for it privately, however but that's what shops do, isn't it?
True, it's called "speculation". You can't blame him for trying. He might even get excitement now from the number of watchers.

New Band... is it a keeper or time to walk?
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
If this is your first band and you think it sounds too busy, then it must be REALLY, REALLY busy!!
LOL. I am used to listening to gigs and appreciate that the best ones have a clarity to the sound where the air isn't filled with noise ALL the time. They're talking about filming a rehearsal. So it will be interesting to watch it back. -

The guitard worries me less than the keys guy. He plays everyone's parts all the time. So IMHO our sound is simply too busy. I recon I should keep an eye on JMB anyway. I'd hate to miss out on an opportunity. -
I'm an amateur. I vaguely know the treble clef if I think about it, but the bass clef I'm completely new to. I don't like standard TAB. I do like rhythm notated TAB, the type that they use in some Hal Leonard books. I also like seeing both standard TAB and standard notation together. I like theory and I like getting to the bones of the music, although I'm not sure how notation helps with this, can someone clarify? Yes, TAB is a shortcut and, as previously stated, it all depends on audience. For me, reading notation requires 2 extra steps before I can play the note - figuring out what said note is and figuring out which of those said notes to use on the fretboard (E string 5th fret or open A?). One day I'll learn notation but a lot of people don't. The original question (which may have already been answered) is do you want to have maximum accessibility requiring extra work or do you want to encourage players to read notation but risk turning others away? Side question - I find it easy enough to transcribe guitar but I have great trouble following bass in a lot of songs as the notes get drowned out by everything else. How do you easily transcribe bass?
On your side question of transcription, you can use software to slow an MP3 down and/or change the pitch. Sometimes moving the pitch up a tone or 2 will lift the bass tones out more. You can also use an EQ in some software to eliminate some of the other tones. I use "Transcribe!" and find it useful. I also have a Tascam, that does much of the same.

New Band... is it a keeper or time to walk?
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
I love the great thoughts here. Subsonic, I like your thinking. I might need to adapt this thinking a bit. I've been told they already have a "pad" of over 400 songs. So they're not wanting to learn any new ones. What I do have, this week, is the task of going away and working on my bass lines for a 2 track medally of "Promised Land" and "Route 66". This could be a great chance for me to bring in a proper chord chart. Otherwise, so far the play list I know about is: Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer Baby I Love You - The Ramones Baby, Baby, Baby - Original Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison Burning Love - Elvis Presley Cotton Fields - Creedence Clearwater Revival Crocodile Rock - Elton John Da Doo Ron Ron - The Crystals Do Ya Wanna Dance? - Cliff Richard I Bet Your Heart - Original I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash I Only Want to Be With You - Dusty Springfield I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles I'm a Believer - The Monkeys Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry Let's Dance - Chris Montez Let's Twist Again - Chubby Checker Manic Monday - The Bangles Mustang Sally - The Commitments Nutbush City Limits - Tina Turner Peaceful Easy Feeling - The Eagles Promised Land - Chuck Berry Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival Roll Over Beethoven - Chuck Berry Route 66 - Chuck Berry Silver Threads and Golden Needles - Linda Ronstadt Simply The Best - Tina Turner Singing The Blues - Guy Mitchell Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum Then He Kissed Me - The Crystals Up On The Roof - The Drifters Walk In The Room - The Searchers Walk Of Life - Dire Straits Wild Side Of Life - Status Quo Wonderful Tonight Eric Clapton You're No Good - Swingin Blue Jeans -
Interesting indeed. There are 3 guitar parts in there, plus 2 keys (piano and organ...). Who's playing the missing parts then, eh..? Rearrangements are fine , of course, if they work, but I'd have doubts about that one. +1 for the format. Not so bad (read 'ropey'...) for a singist, but not much help for anyone else. Who writes 'em out like that..? You..? The singist..? The keys..?
Many thanks for all the input Guys. You're great. In response to Dad; it did cross my mind for me to work out playing the noodly-doodly organ part, but that would sound wild on the bass. I recon the simple fact is that the whole thing is ego-fest for the keys and guitar. Its all out for me to get a new gig, or resign myself to being a prop in their wet-dream. Thanks JTUK for the advice on the chord sheets. I think I'll do that, to keep the experience going while looking. -

A bit more about myself: I have to say I don't have a massive amount of time to rehearse, due to work commitments. I'm 55 and been playing for 5 years, although most of my practice, so far, has been on theory, reading and playing from scores. I'm new to playing with others. I've also not spent much time playing to CDs either. What I'm looking for: I'd like to gig small venues. I'd like to be in a band of like-minded folk and have fun. I do believe, though, that a lot of time can be saved and the performance can be enhanced by the folk in the band all knowing a bit about the theory behind what they're playing. Here are 2 examples of the chord sheets we're playing to: Peaceful Easy Feeling Wonderful Tonight I'd be interested to hear what others think of the sheets. Wonderful Tonight is an interesting arrangement. The Clapton part is played by the Keys. The bass line is played by the guitarist and I'm asked to play routes on the chord changes.
