I need to get up to KL to visit a customer for work. Maybe I can come over late afternoon and take a look. I'd be pleased to explain to you how it al worka too.

First of all, welcome to the forum. There are a number of threads here with tips for beginners, but a good place to start is www.studybass.com. Ambient is, of course, right that the fingerings for a C Major, for example, is the same as for any scale. There are generally 3 different fingerings for the scales though depending on which finger you start with. So if you see other shapes don't be surprised and get confused.

Learning to read the dots - Sheet music to learn with
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Theory and Technique
Finally bit the bullet and spent the entire day working through learning standard notation on the bass clef. I've tried several times but working through this http://www.cyberfretbass.com/reading-bass-music/ made it pretty simple. (still took me all day). Now Ive started working through these links here.
Good on you. I hope you enjoy them -
Solutions to annoying the neighbours.. :-s
Without being sarcastic, isn`t the solution the volume control on the Marshall. I only practice at the same levels as I listen to my tv.
Lozz, you're being far too over simplistic here. We have a BCer here who's desperate to spend cash on more clutter to fill the Man-room and you're avoiding the issue! Alternative answer: +1 I had a Marshall MB30. It was no problem. You can play those quietly. I did. Edit: I also have a Vox-plug. Mine is still in one piece after 3 yrs. It does have a socket for an "aux" input. The sound isn't great, but it's ok and easy to use. -
If you want a seriously cheap, but good bass; try looking out on ebay for a Gear4Music bass. I got mine for £20. The pups were a touch hot for my taste so I changed them, but that's a personal choice. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Guitar-And-Amp-By-Gear4Music-/171445817595?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item27eaf790fb http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gear4music-Electric-Bass-Guitar-Sunburst-Finish-Good-Condition-/281428291793?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item41866ef0d1 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gear4Music-Bass-Guitar-Blue-White-/331313164691?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4d23cdb193

Finding bass is less interesting for me than Piano.
thank you for that Ambient, sounds great as does your recording. i will check it out. really want an octave pedal also.
If you are looking to experiment with Looper and Octave etc try a Zoom B3; that has all of these and a lot more. -
I don't think you can expect to pay less than you are already paying and be able to get anything that is going to be safe or efficient. I guess small things are easy to lose and because of this I have a routine post gig, of immediately removing my plugs, putting them back in their little storage tin and from there straight into the accessories pocket of my gig bag, job done. These are the ones that I've been using for the last couple of years. https://www.proguard...rd-lin-ear-pr10
Thanks for the recommendation Gary. I saw they also supply plugs designed for musicians and ordered 2 pairs. (An extra set for Mrs G when she comes along. ) Back in my biking days we used to say, "if you've got a cheap head, then buy a cheap helmet...)
I gave my Big One to Grangur while Mrs Grangur watched, then she paid me. Thanks Rich, I'm sure you'll enjoy the cab as much as I did.
Well, we're nothing if not adventurous. Thanks for the cuppa, Mark Rich

Met the man today, when I bought his Barefaced cab from him. Mark's a good guy, helpful, honest and informative for a noob such as myself.. We even got a cupa whilst there; all really good. Thanks Mark

Just bought a Mark Bass Little Mark II from Adam. Fast delivery, well packed. PLUS: it came in a great case! Many thanks Adam. Can't wait to try the amp out and see how I get on with it. Cheers Rich

+1 on the "buy before you start", for the access to the instrument to get practising. Unlike learning to drive, you CAN pick up the bass anytime; 24/7. Much of what you're learning on week1 is flexibility, dexterity and muscle memory. If you buy second hand, then you should be able to sell for about the same price, if you don't like bass. So what do you have to lose? Once, for a laugh, I bought a Gear4Music P bass copy on evilbay. It cost me all of £20. The set-up was awful, but after about 30 mins of adjustment it sounded great. It's the best £20 I've ever spent. I highly recommend them. After all, I've spent more on parking a car than that!!

Maybe I'm naive here, but when starting an originals band don't you also need good original material to play? You've said nothing about skills in writing good stuff? Playing devils advocate here; are you fed-up of playing covers or are you fed up of playing along on obscure covers with narrow-minded folk who don't seem to want to be a mate outside of the band situation?
Bands with the GF can be difficult.... Mrs C keeps trying to get me to play in her feminist punk band
I'm sure you'd look great in a crop-top and mini-skirt!

Isn't this question a bit like when someone asks "what are the best pickups to get?" The answer in that situation is the same as in this one; "best for what?" Nobody here knows what a P or a J sounds like in the hands of Lowdowner. Yes, we can give a vague idea, but there's no substitute for going down to a music store and trying them out. Sorry bud but the sound is in the fingers (and the amp, and how you feel on the day) PS: I'm a PJ fan myself.

Beech wood grain: There's a bit of variety in mahogany My guess is beech. That was my first thought when I saw it.

Can't help but agree with the above. I have PJs but I also liked the sound of a Wishbass i had that had a Kent Armstrong MM style humbucker. What I liked about the Kent Armstrong tone was the sound was more of a bass growl than you normally get from a MM. IMHO the MM is too metallic. WD Music sell the Kent Armstrongs: http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/musicman-bass-pickup-2765-p.asp Not bad for £51. There are 3 wires from the pup, so you can control them separately.
