Simple bass set up yet I can never get it right!
Grangur replied to Mornats's topic in Repairs and Technical
If you get fret-buzz on the higher section of the neck and cannot get rid of it without having seriously high action, then this would sound to me like the angle of the neck in the pocket may be wrong. This problem would sound to me like the angle of the neck as it sits in the pocket is pulling the headstock back and pushing the top of the neck up (to make it too close to the strings). Clearly tweaking the truss-rod isn't working unless you make the action stupidly high. So this would sound to me like there's a shim in the bottom of the pocket when it's not needed. Do you have a shim in the pocket? If you do, take it out, screw the neck tight back into place and try again. I'm planning to come down to Swindon sometime next week. If I can make some plans through work to get to Bristol, I'd be happy to take a look. -
Awesome. Its hard not to go back to a precision when you have something else. It has to be said though, you change your basses quicker than I change my underwear!!
Oh good, can I start an orderly queue ready for when you don't want this anymore? It looks cool. (Ignore Discreet.)

Bump!

Interesting point you raise there, KB. I read scores. I try to avoid Tabs apart from using it a recommendation for where on the neck I would be best to find the notes for accessibility; although I often ignore it. Does that make me a musician? In my estimation I'm not a musician anymore than an avid reader of books is an author.
I do my own mainly, more by trial and error than knowing what I'm talkig about. But if it was me I'd try temporarily putting a little sliver of plastic sheet or something like that under the E string in the nut. If it helps...you got the answer.
Surely a low-cut E string slot in the nut would only be the cure if the fret-buzz was only when playing open strings?
If you're going the car paint resprayers route I work right opposite one here in Uckfield - he's done a couple of guitars for me for and can mix the right amount of paint for the job.
Not a bad route IMHO. I sprayed a body. I got a price from a mate who's a sprayer - £100. I thought "Nahhh.. I'll do it". I got the cans, Stripped the body, sanded, sprayed, sanded, sprayed, sanded...... After £50 spent in paint it looks really fine. It would have been better if it'd been done by a pro. It would have had a better shine etc and probably as quick or quicker and fewer flaws, but hey!! Where's the fun in that? Besides, all you need is a sprayer. You don't need a luthier if you can re-assemble and set up yourself.
So someone that reads music, which gives instruction right down to the last detail, is a musician, but someone that reads tab, which requires listening to the music and working out how it works, isn't? What about someone that uses tab to learn other peoples' music, but also writes their own music?
Very fair point - my apologies for the clumsy use of pigeon holes.
How many 'dots' readers are aware of the harmonic implications of what they're playing..? Dots and tab are identical, in that they're simply a visual transmission of the music. Dots are more powerful; they portray more information. Neither contain 'musicianship' inherently. There are many musicians that can read neither...
Very good point. Mrs G plays piano. She only ever plays written music. She has no more idea of the theory behind what she plays than your average TAB reader. In some instances of its use a score is "Tabs for Snobs"; well written in that it gives timing info, but Mrs G is, in effect, a Tab reader. Edit: PS, I think I'm a snob

I in my heart I agree with most of the above. Tha frustration I see though, is the injustice that when the music is performed on stage or in a video, the viewer won't generally know the difference between a musician and a tab reader. This makes the situation different from the artist and the guy who paints by numbers. Earlier today I was watching a video of a guy playing a great bass cover of a Yes track. He was playing a Ric and it was, to my ears, exactly like Chris Squire's playing. I couldn't help thinking though, "does this guy actually KNOW what he's doing or is it all reproduction of it parrot fashion? "Both are a akill, but as it is entered for a competition, I think the winner ahould be a musician, not an impersonator.

Win a studio sesh with Lee Sklar...
Grangur replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in General Discussion
Or prepared to buy a flight? I hope the person who wins this is a musician, not a tab-reader with a fantastic photographic memory. The latter is certainly a great skill, but the time with Lee Skylar would, IMHO, be better value to a musician. -
Interesting to note that the majority couldn't tell maple from rosewood boards - I'd also be interested to know, did anyone/everyone spot their own bass?
I had a Warwick Streamer PJ and a Gear4music P in the group. I think I recognised the G4M. I didn't recognise the 'Wick. What was amazing was the vast array of tones from the basses. Lozz introduced the set by saying that P's are criticised for being a "one sound bass and this will prove this allegation wrong". I slightly disagree. The range of tones from the basses there was vast. What I think it misunderstood slightly is the tone from a P can be changed but changing pups, strings, set-up etc. Many other basses can change their tone with the turn of a knob. That said; how many folk with a Jazz in their hands, simply find a setup they like and then never turn the knobs ever again? If this is the case, why not have a P and simply find the set-up you like? Please forgive me.. this is just the ramblings of a noob.
The reason for that happening in this thread could be because out of the 20 tracks in the TV programme the thread is about 7 were released in the 70s.
Fair point. Not that I've yet actually meant that seen the program. I was meaning it on a more general observation level. On a more constructive note... Have a look at this, if you've not yet seen it. It's the full movie of the story of The Temptations. It's probably peppered with Holywoodesch untruths and rewrites of reality, but it's good entertainment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxXhm-nonOY

Good thread. I was born in 59. It makes me laugh when folk reminisce about the 60s and then throw in examples of the 70s to illustrate the point. If you want to hear a large selection of the"Sounds of the Sixties" then tune in to Desmond Carrington on Radio 2 at the weekend. You will get a great overview of the time. Personally I'd rather join Lozz in playing the Motown collection or similar. All eras produce some good stuff and a lot of more questionable material. Its the good that carries on and stands the test of time. Time will be the test of if Will I am or Adel were ever any good.

He may, of course, have been enterprising on the tour: Different bass twin every night, knowing he can sell each at an enhanced price due to the qudos..... err, nahh. I don't buy that either.
Haha! I see, nah I was just showcasing your lovely bass
But it would be a great prize. It would be very uncharitable of GW to withdraw it now. Besides, we had a bass in the raffle thi time.

I found the day interesting. Like many other bass-noobs I've been going though basses looking for "that sound". Always GASing for the illusive bass. What the test, and trying/seeing some other basses taught me was before hitting the "Buy it Now" or "Bid Now" buttons, stop and look at the basses I have: Check the set up, try different strings, adjust the EQ, maybe try different pups. There's no way that an Encore or a Gear4MUsic bass should sound better than a thoroughbred USA Fender, but for some reason the some of the folk in the room ticked a box or 2 resulting in giving that view. BTW, that G4M bass is now giving me some thinking to do. The pots will be replaced, the pups will be replaced with either SD Quarter pounders or Kent Armstrongs as I have those already. That said I might move it on, maybe, like Bluejay, Ps aren't my thing? Whatever the answer I know KNOW I've a lot to learn before I ever buy another bass.
You could buy i brand new Warwick Pro Series Corvette passive from Thomann for £440. I can highly reccomend these,i have an active Corvette & love it so much i now have a Pro Series Thumb bass on order.
I had the pleasure of trying one of these yesterday at the Bass Bash. I didn't hear it, but BlueJay owns and loves it. Nice finish, well balanced. You won't go far wrong.

All were simply set to full tone for all basses.
-
With all Warwick basses you can get an accurate description of the materials and manufacture date from the serial number. Ask the seller to send you the number and enter it on the Warwick web site and you will see all the info. Corvette necks can be thick and heavy. If you live nearby, go and see if you can try it out. if not, ask the front to back depth. In any case, in today's market I would expect this to go for not much over £450.
Good idea - wish there was one around here
That's why I'd like to meet up online. I'm down near London.

It's interesting how he has only 1 feedback but nothing for over 12 months, and then he sells this. He may look like the guy in the Letterman program but you don't get a really good look. There are no really good pictures of the bass in the ad. No closeups of distinguishing marks. I recon you should report him to ebay. I think it's a scam.
