1. He's in Guisborough, Cleveland. You can see this in his profile on the standard interface, but not in the mobile version
2. Hi there, Just want some advice here. I've been trying to adjust the intonation on the E on my Warwick Streamer and as the title suggests the saddle won't go back quite far enough. If the bridge was a BBOT I'd think of moving it back but I don't fancy doing it on a Warwick. Can this be a sign if needing new strings? Any other ideas?
3.
Yep I too have my thumb in the middle of the back of the neck and I pivot, it never moves up like in that picture. I really just do not have much of a stretch and the only way I can stretch is by angling my wrist awkwardly - and I don't want to do that a) because it's very tense and and puts wrist at a severe angle and then I'll get carpal tunnel (had that before years ago - developed by itself) and b ) because it hurts! Bear in mind Im 55 and a pretty weedy female, I have started and stopped playing bass over 3 years because of this problem and I often think I'm not physically made to play the bass!! I've had a couple of different professional bass playing mates glance over when visiting and say my hand positioning is okay but just watch that tension so I've spent the last month working hard on a the lightest touch for fretting that I can and a relaxed hand to avoid tension. My hands are a medium glove size so I haven't got small hands, but I'm determined not to give up as I've seen some tiny little girl players on youtube with child size hands who can barely stretch over 2 low frets! playing really well, not to mention the guy with one finger! So I'm not sure how else to play legato on the low end without being able to stretch over 4 frets - maybe I'll just carry on and see if it irons itself out
I'm fairly new to bass too, but it sounds to me like it's just tension in your hands and wrists. I believe you'll get there. I'm 55 too (this month) and it's taken me 3 years of on and off attempts at feeble fret-rattling to get something like a slap-bass sound, but it's coming. One day I'll also get rid of the flying fingers too, it just takes time. Keep on going at it. Get comfortable and play slow and relax. Don't wind yourself up and it'll come. If you want lessons Mike in Chelmsford is a good guy. He's listed in the Tutors section. I recon you'll be ok though.
4.
Possibly - our baby was born prematurely here The airline won't let us fly home - trapped as I said.
Oh WOW!! Congratulations! But what a pain not being able to fly. I'm sure it soon stops feeling like a holiday.
5.
Stuck in Orlando still - can someone record it for me ? MP3 perhaps
One's heart bleeds. It's really tough for some folk isn't it?
6. He's had 4 offers that he turned down!! How low can those offers have been? You could sell the body or the pups or the neck alone for more than £10. Mind you the neck does have irreparable damage - an Encore logo.
7.
My hands aren't that large at all; note that I play the 5th with my ring finger not my little finger because without moving my hand much I have a longer reach using that finger (maybe a further half inch or so).
With your thumb on the centre of the hump on the back of the neck, you can use that as a pivot point and move your fingers up and down the neck and get a longer reach. With your thumb over the top of the neck, as shown here, anyone will struggle
8.
I mentioned it last Thursday
You were right about it too. It does have some quirks in the use that don't make it the easiest to use.
9. Chicago were a great band. "25 or 6 2 4", and "Colour my world" are among my favourites.
10.
Thanks for that. Great to practice site reading.
LOL... It's "sight" reading. Unless you're in the building trade, of course. Welcome to BC Pieterv. Good luck with the reading
11. I guess in doing this you're playing the major scale using the following for example: Gmajor: E string - 3 5 A string - 2 3 5 D string - 2 4 5 Have you thought of doing it this way: E string - 3 5 7 A string - 3 5 7 D string - 4 5 Playing it this way the 3rd is 7th fret on the E and the 5th is 5th fret on the A ; a smaller jump. You need to learn ALL of the notes on the neck and use all of the patterns to create a scale. Don't only use the one. The 5th is also the fret above the root - so if you're playing a C major scale and play 3rd fret on the A-string, the 5th is also the G on the E-string; right below the C root. The other way is go fretless and slide it. Edit - or move further up the neck and move down a string.. of course.
12. Excellent Bilbo! Many thanks! I'll take a look
13.
...but the motivation is very similar, if not exactly the same, whether you're playing in a pub or on YouTube - i.e. wanting an audience for your performance. Of course a live gig is very different environment to recording a YouTube clip at home. But both are... ultimately... about the vanity of performance and wanting to 'connect' with people. If you're really questioning the value of YouTube as a promotional medium, then may I point you to Ceefax page 303 where you'll find more information on the topic
Agreed. You could equally ask me "If you only ever play in the lounge and Mrs G is your only ever audience, why bother at all?" Some folk need an audience. Some don't. Some have the punters at the O2, others it's the "Dog and Duck", for some it's the missus and others get a kick from watching the viewer figures rise on their YouTube account. I would still ask of those who really should only play to the mirror, "Why bother?" If the sound is so weak that the viewer can't hear you above the backing track, why bother?
14. New tune added - Frere Jaques - Traditional French song
15.
nobody's mentioned Musescore yet, desktop as well as iOS/android, very easy to pick up and figure out.
I was just about to. I use Musescore. Its excellent for FOC software.
16. In the start section I've separated the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. It's hard to draw the line on this, but Beginner is what I play ok. Intermediate is what I'm trying to play. Advanced is what I'm working towards.... well, it's a start. Cheers Richard
17. I'm amazed at the number of views for this thread. I've not added to much more since the beginning. I'll try to get some transcribed and loaded up. In the meantime here's one more for the collection: Minuet En Sol, by JS Bach Cheers Richard
18. I can't believe this is STILL here!! I sold an identical one on ebay for £220 +postage only 2 weeks ago. Mine had damage. This one's in better condition. Have a bump for a great bass at the price with a beauty of a fast, smooth neck.
19. Thanks. It's simple, but effective. It doesn't have some of the calibration for precise bending to a set radius, but as long as the wire is bent slightly more than the curvature of the FB then the wire can be glued and tapped into place easy enough.
20. I'm with Roger. What's so special about a 70s Fender anyway? 30 years is not old. Old Fenders aren't always anything significantly special. What's the fuss?
21. Wow!! A lot of folk waste a lot of money buying and selling cheap basses when they first get started. I recon you've hit gold on that one. Nice bass.
22. Great result! Congratulations on finding what you really want. We look forward to seeing the pictures. Cos as you know; without pics it didn't really happen.
23. With any paint job the filler and primer covers the dimples and wood grain etc and gives the smooth finish. The colour just gives the colour only. with no primer it will simply look cr@p
24. You'd get more than £55 if you put it on ebay. If you put it up on Sunday for a 7 day auction starting at 99p you'll do ok.
