1. Back on to the main topic... If the "bass for sale" sections were divided by value or Fender/nonFender, it would be interesting for the mods to see which sections get visits and which don't. This would give them a better view of the readership demographic. I don't know what the mods would make of the info, or what use it would be. But I suspect that cheap basses, on the whole, don't sell here.
2.
...I dont get the Fender bashing on here. I thought we are above all that. If more people use them it stands to reason they get mentioned more. Seeing as the first post has been changed (same time the dummy was throuwn out by the looks of it) i have no idea what this thread is about, but it seems to involve a few digs at Fender. Quite childish really.
+1... well said Sir! IMHO Fender are to instruments what Ford Motors are to cars. They're reasonably priced, middle-of-the-road instruments that deliver fair value for money. To me they're not exciting in terms of style, but each to their own.
3. What could be silly? You get one hellof a bass for the £ with these. If you're looking for a 5 string fretless these are a great choice.
4.
Would also save the capitalists from having pay the butler to trawl through all the cheap todge
Exactly! The Bounder is demanding an increase in pay to do it too!!
5.
haha all good ideas I'm a fan of the deep red stain and black pick guard Well if you change your mind and feel like embarking on that project you know were it is! Out of interest, what have you just acquired?
I've just got a Warwick Streamer LX4 fretless. Certainly vrry pleased with it.
6. I like Scott's Bass Lessons, but I'm not good enough to begin the course. His program of lessons I've got seems to start with how to hold the bass and alternate your fingers, then jumps to stuff that's beyond my ability. I've never found anything much that's in the middle ground. Probably I'm just being thick.
7.
There must be a wiring fault somewhere, that is spectacular drain. An average alkaline battery delivers 565mAh, so to drain in half an hour, you're pulling over an amp out of it! According to EMG specs - an EMG BTC control (2 band EQ) drains 600uA@9V, and a single EMG pickup draws around 80uA. That's MICROamps. You might have different stuff in your bass, but you see where I'm coming from here. Something's definitely not right. Are you using good quality alkaline 9V batteries? Is the battery warm when you pull it out once it's finished?
+1 Convert it to passive and get rid of the battery problems forever. IMHO
8. As you bought this as a cheap bass. Are you really doing the right thing spending much money on this, or would you do well to playit as it is while you save up for another, better bass? You could buy a neck sanding block of the right radius and sand it yourself. After doing this you could refinish it yourself with varnish.
9. LOL No probs. Actually the experimental part of me would like to jave this, hear it as it is. Then maybe add another humbucker at the edge of the pick guard. Change the pg to a pearlescent white one..... I daren't though. I bought another bass yesterday. Glwts
10. Advertising my ignorance here, but is this a "jazz"? I thought a jazz has 2 pups. I'd have called this a "humbucker P" or an MM copy. In any case, this is an interesting bass at a great price.
11. Vintage V1004.... now that I like. That's a really nice plain, unlined FB. Cool grain too.
12. Very interesting side on that too. I've only just found this thread. Sorry I'm late
13.
You mean people have got to buy instruments on their own merit rather than just going by what's on the headstock? How tragic.
With most basses being bought over the Internet, it is sad that too many are not what they're claimed to be. I'm sure Fender would be quick to tell you a list of reasons of quality why a Fender is better than a Squier.
14. We don't know where you live, but can you find a fretless bass im a shop and try one? Aftet all, every violinist and cellist plays fretless from day one.
15. Me thinks the time has come that if you want a Fender and want to be sure it IS a Fender; buy a new one. It's sad but if you want a second-hand Fender, buy one with "Squier" on the headstock. The rest should all be treated as fake. All the folks out there faking them have IMHO got us to a situation now, where any second-hand Fender needs to be treated with suspicion. It's a sad situation.
16. If you're looking for a bass that will make you sound like Jaco then you're not alone. The difficulty in doing this is even if you played Jaco's own bass you will still sound like you playing Jaco's bass. The sound is in the fingers, it's not just the bass that does it. Finding your sound is a journey. Have fun on the way, Good luck.
17. I can vouch that this is a great bass. I had the pleasure of playing it a couple of weeks ago and its in great condition. Nice smooth neck and not to wide either. 5 strings just ain't my thing unfortunately. Brian makes a pretty good cuppa too!
18. These are really cool basses. I had an EDB600 as a starter bass. Lovely fast, slim neck, a comfortable weight and loads of variety in the tone. GLWTS
19. For the record; this sold on ebay for £112. It started at 99p and was listed for 7 days
20. I generally prefer the pristine, clear FB. This is one of the very few examples I've seen where the lined FB looks great.
21. If it's sticky I doubt that scouring pads will get it off. What they are good for is if the stickiness is caused by the ultra-smooth surface causing your hand not to slide. The pad will break the surface up and reduce friction. I'd look first at what's making the neck sticky. It's very possible it's only an accumulation of sweat, coke and pizza grease over the years. If not, my guess is the last owner was a fan of "Pledge" or "Mr Sheen" spray polish. If it's polish that's the problem, you can try using a good soft cloth and wipe it down with white-spirit. If it is spray polish that's the problem it could be a slow job, using a lot of new bits of cloth. If it's general grime and hand grease, then it's easier; using a soft cloth sprayed with a drop of Flash cleaner. Spray the cleaner onto the cloth, not the wood. Don't get the wood really wet though. Just use a small amount of cleaner. You could post some pics of the neck, that might help us to help you.
22. That is something special. I'm not envious in the slightest . Really I'm not
23.
Cheers everyone, I think Tru Oil is the look I'm going for so will get some sorted, that's a really nice Stingray you've got there Bolo
Doesn't Tru oil give a gloss finish? I'm only going on some videos I've seen, but won't that be the same as a lacquered finish?
24. That's alright then. Most of the notes on the D string can be found on the A string anyway. You simply need to learn to move your fretting hand up and down the neck faster.
25. Try to take and post a clear pic of your wiring. You may hav connected it wrongly.
