1. Nice one. You have every right to be proud. Thanks for sharing Nice artwork too. Are you also on vocals?
2. The amp I'm using is a Roland 100w cube - nothing too big, but as you rightly say, I can turn up the gain. I'm not in a band. So it's no big deal. Many thanks again
3.
bent bit of tin.
thanks
4.
..... I also think that fretless basses (when compared like-for-like with their fretted versions) have less sustain anyway. YMMV of course. Although that will, to an extent, depend on fretting-hand techniques. If the OP wishes to install a high-mass bridge, then he should go for it. But as part of a quest for improved tone and sustain, I think it will follow the law of diminishing returns.
Isn't that unavoidable for fretless to have less sustain, because the padded edge of the fretting finger will have some damping effect to the note. Noob question: what's a bbot bridge?
5. Thanls guys. The 2nd side went better than the first. Its all smooth and sanded down to size. When I was buying the veneers I looked at maple but the idea I went for in the end was to try to get the headstock to look reflect the body. I'll see how it goes. If it fails miserably I'll try again with maple. What put me off the maple was that the neck is aged maple. The veneer was much more pale.
6. If it is the cold that causes the change in the set-up, I would have thought bringing it back to "normal" temperature will change the set-up back unless it's not the cold, but it could be damp. Taking it home into a stable temperature has to be worth a try though. You need to find out if it's the cold or another problem.
7. Hmmm... all good points. Gary's right. I'm a bit of a perfectionist. When I got the veneer I picked up twice as much as I actually need for the job. So I have enough to do it again. Howie may also have a good point. The tuning heads would be a good distraction from the edge. I've started on the other side for now, only this time I'm being careful to make sure I get enough glue to cover the edges.
8. Things have moved along a bit now and I've filled the holes and started on the veneer. A thought struck me; I filled them with wine corks. I trimmed them and sanded the tops, filled any gaps with wood filler and sanded again. I then started on my first try at veneering. I wish it was a great success. but one of the edges has splintered a bit. Most is ok, but the top edge isn't so great. So, should I rip it off and start again or leave it? Any tips, ideas, etc very welcome. Thanks Rich
9. .. or cold-white pearlised one
10.
Hello all, been lurking for some time and pleased to see a great, active forum free of d***heads. .... Glad to be here!
Humph!! So you've not noticed ME then!! Welcome anyway! Cheers Richard
11. Hi Mark, Welcome to the mad house. Cheers Dave (Richard)
12.
Bwahahaha!!! The areas we are most frequently paid with £50 notes are those where there's the greatest need for money laundering. In posh areas, people buy their Pinot Grigio with credit cards, dontcherknow. The place that has given us by far the most £50 notes was a big, empty Irish pub in a large, well-known Irish area of London. There was never any possible legal explanation for why a pub which never had more than a dozen punters in it could possibly have five shiny new £50 notes in the till every Saturday night ...
Yes, soon after posting I did think the folk most likely to have a mit full of 50s would be scrap dealers and others who buy and sell in cash; not the rich. I still think insisting on smaller notes is reasonable.
13. You must play some real posh areas if the easiest ready cash for the landlord to grab from the till is 4 £50 notes. Talk to other people who've played there and my guess is that he does that trick to ALL the bands? Its a way of getting a discount. When you've got a few other victims together, then go to the police with the names of all the other victims. The landlord won't like you for it, but that's tough. He's been trying to take you for mugs.
14. My guess is Lee Skylar has lost count.
15. Thanks for posting. Words fail....
16. Hey Dave. if I were you I'd get some replacment soapbar pups and make it go passive. I have a bass with a Kent Armstrong MM pup that's really poswerful. Loads of growl and punch. They do soapbar pups too for 59.99 each. You can get them from WD Music. Then with passive it's all so much more understandable, and no batteries!! Yeah!!
17. +1 for Musescore. It also opens you to a great library of other folks scores that you can download and transpose for playing on bass. You can also load your own up to the library too. I often download a piece, change the clef, drop it all down an octave or 2 and play it on bass.
18.
I just ordered a Zoom B3. I tried to order one from GAK, because they offer "free shipping on orders over £99". However, put in an address in Scotland and they want to charge you £13.99 shipping and inform you that if you live in Scotland you need to spend £299 for free shipping. F**k that. I live in Edinburgh, not Orkney. Sounds Live got my order instead.
Roll on independence eh? Then you'll have import duty on top!! Quite agree with you. Good luck.
19. Yep, that one was the best. Y' know. The one I voted for. That one.
20. Many thanks for the ideas guys. I think I'll go for the pups.
21. Hi there Fat-stringers, I've an LTD ESP fretless 5 string. It's got the most gorgeous neck, it plays like a dream with harmonics on all fret(lines) etc.... But it's not loud. It has a pre-amp. To get some sort of output something like that from my other basses I have to turn the 3 eq knobs up full, destroying the point of a the eq if you ask me. I've connected one of the pups straight to a jack and the output was ok-ish, but nothing amazing. On another bass I have a Kent Armstrong MM style pup. It's passive, it growls and punches like a good'n. I'm tempted to rip out the ESP pups and pre-amp on the LTD and put in a pair of Kent Armstrong soapbars, go completely passive. This could give me the problem of what to do with some holes, there are 5 right now. I could go Vol, tone, vol, tone, selctor switch, or something like(?) What say you? What would you do? Cheers Rich
22. I don't even have a belt at all! But if you're experimenting with effects, loopers and want a simple drum synth, as I do, then it's great. It's more than I need. There are loads of vids on Youtube. Here's just one. As you can see, you can adjust various settings on the effects.
23. I know this is an old thread, but for the record: I've got a MusicMan style pup in my Wishbass. Wow, does that thing growl. Loads of punch and really sexy! WD Music (I've no connection, and not yet bought from them) sell them for £59. That's a real bargain for a great pup. I need some Soapbars for my LTD that I want to make passive, so I'll be going for the 2 of those.
24. Perhaps Mark Goffeney could be some inspiration to you both: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q69ck5piSMI
