If Mcnach's guy can't/won't do them I could. Here's a prototype. I could make the sides straight. It would be easier to make them straight. I've shaped the top and curved off the bottom, so it's clear of the E string. Also, this one is probably deeper than you'd need it. Edit: The one shown is in ebony So you could sand it and shape it more if you want.

Many thanks guys. Yes, that is all a great help. I, for one, have managed to get much further than I have before. I've done the beat track, without recording (we'll take that as a given for now) I've told it to play the track back, but I don't hear anything. I've saved the project and told it to Render it as a .wav. This then plays back in iTunes. Is this normal? It's not a problem, but am I missing something? Thanks for the help. As the problem is something that only appears after 45 mins of playing, my guess is there's a capacitor in the pre-amp circuit board that is charging and not discharging. So when it's charged its changing the electrical bias on other components in the circuit. It could be a faulty capacitor or it could be other components causing this to happen. Check in the pre-amp circuit board and wires to so if any wires have become unattached or any other visible poor connection. It could be a poor connection to earth somewhere. Knowing the cheap quality of the components used in these things though, its possible this could be a great opportunity to install a descent pre-amp.

So you're saying it's lacquer. With some lacquer it's possible to remove the scratches in the finish by rubbing with thinners. It softens the lacquer and the scratches are covered over. I can't be sure this will work with your neck. But it might be worth a try. There's a guy I used to work with who did it a few times. I'm sure others here will know more.

Agreed with much of the above, unless it's a lacquered finish neck and all this sanding removes the lacquer and you're down to the wood. Sorry guys, but without that info this thread is all hot air. You can finish with as fine a finish as you want, but if the head and tail are lacquered and the centre is un-finished bare wood, the wood will absorb sweat and get rather grey in colour.

[/quote] Sorry my friend, but I don't think you're talking high-enough numbers. I wouldn't sand any more with less than 350. The last thing you want now is adding more scratches. I finish a neck with 1000 grain or very fine wire wool, because on the neck you want it really smooth.

I don't know how bad your neck is looking right now, or if it's a lacquered finish, but by rushing in to doing something you could make the problem a whole lot worse. If it's lacquered, I'd suggest you take a look around locally and find a specialist in wood finishing. They might call themselves French polishing specialists. Take it there and ask them what to do with it. FINE wire wool is a possible solution, but the stuff in the DIYstores is not fine enough. Good luck

Hmmm... hard one. I've got a number of basses and they're all different: PJ, 4 string fretted P 4 string fretted Jazz 5 fretless etc... I love them all for different reasons. Between them they give a variety of tones, growl etc., In many ways I think I'm still looking for "my sound", but it's certainly possible I've got[i] "that bass"[/i] right under my nose with the wrong strings, but it's all too easy to blame the bass and go GASsing through the For Sale section and miss out on something you already have.

That is looking good. It's really beginning to look like it's coming together.

This is really great to watch. I've just been taking a look at your web site. You have done some amazing work on your other basses. Do you keep them all? Are you a luthier by profession? If not, how do you find time to do all this AND play? Thanks for this look at your work anyway. Cheers Richard

Just a minor point here... what's you budget? Also, what bass lines do you like the sound of? What sort of music do you want to play?
