1. Many thanks guys. Yes, that is all a great help. I, for one, have managed to get much further than I have before. I've done the beat track, without recording (we'll take that as a given for now) I've told it to play the track back, but I don't hear anything. I've saved the project and told it to Render it as a .wav. This then plays back in iTunes. Is this normal? It's not a problem, but am I missing something? Thanks for the help. Edit: Ou7shined for Recording Mod! Vote NOW!!
2.
I use Reaper for everything now. I'm sure that I don't use a fraction of its potential but I do produce reasonable demos with the little knowledge I have of it. I go guitar > Line6 UX2 > Reaper. I love its almost plug and play simplicity and get totally absorbed in adding extra instruments and effects to my riff ideas. You need to find a decent stock of VST's and VSTi's to use with it. There are quite a lot of free ones on the net but you need to put in the time sorting the wheat from the chaff. I also find that a decent drum plugin is essential. I used Addicted Drums. There are tutorials on YouTube but found that trying to figure out Reaper without knowing the language of DAW fatiguing to keep up with so I'm basically self-taught. Which bits do you need most help with?
Thanks for posting this thread Simon. I'm in the same boat. I know Ou7shined is a great guy. Not only is he a Mod, but we see his other contributions and he's got the greatest of intentions. Regretfully though his post leaves me thinking "Que...?!" Sorry to pick your post out, Ou7shined, but it does, for me at least, sum up my problem with the Recording forum here on BC. HOWEVER.... it's been great. I've googled VST and found this link which answers a lot of questions.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Studio_Technology Actually a glossary of recording terms here would be useful for a numptie like myself. Thanks guys... I DO mean that. You're all great. Cheers Rich
3. I just viewed it, then went out and went back in and the views didn't go up. So it might be unique views. Hey Gary. It could get to the stage where this bass has been seen by more punters than you when gigging!!! (Err... sorry. Sore point maybe ) Anyway, here's a 99 replies type bump. GLWTS
4. As the problem is something that only appears after 45 mins of playing, my guess is there's a capacitor in the pre-amp circuit board that is charging and not discharging. So when it's charged its changing the electrical bias on other components in the circuit. It could be a faulty capacitor or it could be other components causing this to happen. Check in the pre-amp circuit board and wires to so if any wires have become unattached or any other visible poor connection. It could be a poor connection to earth somewhere. Knowing the cheap quality of the components used in these things though, its possible this could be a great opportunity to install a descent pre-amp.
5.
My wife uses these little button magnets in her floristry, for holding on corsages without using pins. They're really quite powerful and brilliant for cleaning up wirewool leftovers.
Excellent! Is she available for this weekend?
6. How about a Wishbass? It's got a good, down to earth look and a great growl tone and fretless mwaaa
7. Is this what they use as a bass in Yorkshire? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151220246009
8. Naaahhh, Gary would only need to lend it to me for a few days. Then I can make it look really authentic.
9.
Selling fee avoidance!
Blatantly done
10.
This is the video that inspired me to try but find it hard to get Scotch brite on shops. May just try online or use a high grit paper
You can get it at Homebase, in the decorating section with the sandpaper.
11. Are you sure? I've just got this new belt buckle too. It would improve things no end
12. Hey Gary, you know why this hasn't sold don't you? It's not "road worn". How about we get together at the weekend. I've got some sand paper......
13. So you're saying it's lacquer. With some lacquer it's possible to remove the scratches in the finish by rubbing with thinners. It softens the lacquer and the scratches are covered over. I can't be sure this will work with your neck. But it might be worth a try. There's a guy I used to work with who did it a few times. I'm sure others here will know more.
14. Agreed with much of the above, unless it's a lacquered finish neck and all this sanding removes the lacquer and you're down to the wood. Sorry guys, but without that info this thread is all hot air. You can finish with as fine a finish as you want, but if the head and tail are lacquered and the centre is un-finished bare wood, the wood will absorb sweat and get rather grey in colour.
15.
If the scratches are caused by 120 grade paper. You now need to buy some thing like some 180, 240, 400 and 600 grade paper. Take out the scratches of your 120 with the 180, then use the 240 etc, finishing up with the 600. It really is very doable. Also, I would advise wetting the wood and allowing to dry between each sanding. This brings up the grain each time and you will end up with a smoother finish.
Sorry my friend, but I don't think you're talking high-enough numbers. I wouldn't sand any more with less than 350. The last thing you want now is adding more scratches. I finish a neck with 1000 grain or very fine wire wool, because on the neck you want it really smooth.
16. I don't know how bad your neck is looking right now, or if it's a lacquered finish, but by rushing in to doing something you could make the problem a whole lot worse. If it's lacquered, I'd suggest you take a look around locally and find a specialist in wood finishing. They might call themselves French polishing specialists. Take it there and ask them what to do with it. FINE wire wool is a possible solution, but the stuff in the DIYstores is not fine enough. Good luck
17.
No...count me in there too
Me 3. I was in a shop and the guy pushed a Fender P into my hands. I'd never played a P before. I was new to bass and had only ever played a jazz. I couldn't understand how anyone could be so passionate about a bass with such limited variation in sound. I have a P bass. But I couldn't be happy if it was my only bass.
18. +1 on the Warwick. Their growl just hits the soul every time.
19. Hmmm... hard one. I've got a number of basses and they're all different: PJ, 4 string fretted P 4 string fretted Jazz 5 fretless etc... I love them all for different reasons. Between them they give a variety of tones, growl etc., In many ways I think I'm still looking for "my sound", but it's certainly possible I've got "that bass" right under my nose with the wrong strings, but it's all too easy to blame the bass and go GASsing through the For Sale section and miss out on something you already have.
20. That is looking good. It's really beginning to look like it's coming together.
21. This is really great to watch. I've just been taking a look at your web site. You have done some amazing work on your other basses. Do you keep them all? Are you a luthier by profession? If not, how do you find time to do all this AND play? Thanks for this look at your work anyway. Cheers Richard
22. Just a minor point here... what's you budget? Also, what bass lines do you like the sound of? What sort of music do you want to play?
23. Ibanez, I have to agree are really cool instruments. One I've always like the look of is the SR600. It's a great looker and they handle well. With the Bartolini pups they sound really smooth. There's one for sale here at a good price too: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/227560-ibanez-sr600-natural-ash/page__fromsearch__1 (I'd have bought it but Mrs G would kill me for increasing the collection)
24. Hi Loula, welcome to Basschat.
25. No. Take it back if it's new. Why not add a poll to this thread?
