1. Hey Dunky! Don't take it bad, mate. It will all be alright in the end. If it is not alright, then it is not yet "the end".
2. As I'm nowhere near you either, here's a link to a good tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te44eWXd9pc Keep us informed about how it goes
3. WOW! Me and the long suffering, good Mrs G have just listened to all of the above. It's not easy this month. I think we've got it down to 3 so far, but this is going to take a few listens to nail a leader amongst our resident winners. Well done guys. I take my hat off to you all.
4. Hi all, I've become the "proud" owner of 2 spare necks. One is maple fretted and another is rosewood de-fretted, but the trus-rod is shot to pieces. What I'd really like is a fully working (of course) ebony or rosewood fretless neck. I know where I can buy a fingerboard blank. Does anyone know how to remove am existing fingerboard? I'm thinking of doing the replacement on the rosewood one and replace the trus... if it would be economically viable... which I half suspect it's not. Thanks
5. It's great. I just wish I could have one without feeling stoopid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id1qFBYyuj0
6. I prefer to use a blow lamp rather than stripper, but until you get there be ready for finding its not solid wood. good luck
7. Real tasty!! Funnily enough, WRT the looks I'd be tempted to swap the necks. Surprising that the fretless is more weighty. Any idea why? Also... the sound of the fretless is darker and more sexy.. IMHO Is this down to the strings?
8. I use Musescore and reasonably happy with it, but then I've never used Sibelius. Been using it for about 2 years on an off. They also have a community where you can download other people's music that they've created in Musecsore. There's not a lot of bass going on there, so you have to transpose it and change the clef etc., but thats no problem if you find what you want there.
9. You said your palm is sore. Is the skin sore, or do the mussels in the hand ache? If the skin is sore, then it's more likely to be that the surface of the neck has become sticky and your skin is getting friction burns when you're moving your hand up and down the neck. I've not had this on a neck, but I have from a computer keyboard. If the neck is getting sticky then you probably need to clean it. How you do that will be dependent on the finish, but if it's lacquer, then a soft soapy cloth is all you need, then dry it thoroughly after.
10.
Sorry. I still have no mobile version...
At the risk of asking a silly question; have you looked for the "Use mobile version" button at the bottom left of the page? If so, does it not change your view to mobile?
11. Thanks for this guys. I've been trying some really nice looking wooden ones I was given as a pressie. Just came to the conclusion that picks aren't for me. Now I know why; wood doesn't flex. I'm going to try some plastic. Thanks
12.
I would
This is a nice p-bass, Simon.
13. Here's one - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ibanez-SR500-bass-guitar-/251428142036?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3a8a48fbd4 Ibanez SR500. with Bartolini pups too. Also, if the body gets pranged you can rub it down, change it to blonde (it's blonde under the brown stain) and it'll look even cooler.
14.
I discovered that a simple precision was all I needed. I do fancy a jazz bass but haven't found one yet that I really like
Not even the one you've just bought? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/227444-i-have-just-bought-a-jazz-bass/page__fromsearch__1 ... in case it slipped your mind?
15. I've also had a Hipshot. That's good too. As Si600 says, it's worth using one that has side adjustment in the position of the strings. (The Gotoh you linked to doesn't appear to)
16.
How can you tell the difference between sub £200 basses so that you get the most for your money and don't end up with a beginner bass.
Simple it has Yamaha, Squier, Ibanez or Vintage on the headstock. (OK I missed a few) Successful brands are successful for a reason.
17.
So true. I'm beginning to understand why people yearn for multiple basses after years of being baffled by this.
I realised this a while ago and bought multiple basses... Now I'm just baffled which to play and when it doesn't sound good, is it me or the bass? It's ok, I think I know the answer on that. What I do know is I'm still exploring to find exactly what sound I'm after, just hoping I'll know it when I get there, if I get there.
18.
If we're keeping count: bought at least 23, kept 2! BB424x and a BB1024x! Truckstop
Correction... Truckstop has also been wrong on 21 occasions.
19.
Shops aren't 'fronts' for a certain brand 'whether or not it's any good' When someone stocks their shop they are often given a minimum level for their account. So someone who wants to sell Yamaha basses for example might have to spend £10k a year with Yamaha in order for Yamaha to agree to open an account and supply instruments. It is obviously more attractive to stock equipment from companies like fender, Yamaha and Warwick who make basses and amps than companies that only make basses. £10k is just a figure I've plucked out of the air, I suspect it's a lot higher and different for each manufacturer. In essence you can't go to fender and open an account and just ask for a red Jazz and a black P, then go to Ibanez and ask for an SR200 in blue.
This. If a seller is encouraging you towards a Yamaha, for example it's probably more to do with wanting to place an order with Yamaha and they need to make the order big enough to meet Yam's minimum order value. In any case, whether it's Yamaha, Fender/Squier or Ibanez, they're all good basses and you'll get value for money. The question of if it's right for you; that's something only you can answer. And... if you don't like any of them don't buy any of them... simple. And... Truckstop is right. Truckstop is always right....
20. Here's a good vid on the subject. Dave Marks is a good guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXkxu_7Tn48 I'm sure what you're doing is fine. I've been playing almost 4 years, but I'm 54. When my teacher was trying to tell me on day 1 that I MUST do 1 finger per fret from day 1 at the bottom of the neck (at the nut) I binned him. I'm 54, my joints are stiffer than a 15yrs old. There's no way I'm going to be able to keep that up. My stretch might have got bigger now, but Its still only 15cm from finger to finger; same as you. Make mates of other musicians and talk about your worries - like you're doing now. Keep on at it mate!
21.
I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought that.
+1 If you have something against cheap instruments then don't buy one, but don't knock the choice of others. If you want buying advice then that's fine, but tell us what you think you want in a bass. You can't beat trying out in a shop though. Then you can be the judge of a good bass, as others have said.
22.
I don't see it working for the meat and potatoes stuff, but there are a few high-end instruments I would be very curious to experience playing that I'm not in a financial position to consider buying. I'm not in the habit of trying out things in shops unless I'm considering a purchase - I'm a polite sort of chap (or try to be) and it just feels a bit cheeky. So I'd be quite open to the idea, in certain cases.
+1 I can also understand a time limit on trying a bass too. It must be frustrating to have a customer playing a bass for an hour, then say "nahh, I don't like it. "
23.
I think more people should suffer from TAS, Technique Acquisition Syndrome. Next time you see some gear you want but don't need spend half on lessons and save the other half. You’ll end up a better and richer bass player.
Very true. I'm sure all my basses were bought due to some misguided belief that they would make me a better player.
24.
the bass with the switches is a 1985 thumb bass.... so no passive mode - the active jazz pickups from seymore duncan have 3 switches on each pickup, one is the resonance of the pickup, one of the others is an eq curve... but I don't know which is which and there is also a 3rd that I don't have a clue what it's supposed to be doing!
Sounds a great set up. I thought it strange/unlikely you'd have a push-pull and not found it.
