1.
Nope! Just set them in ways that sound good. No idea what they are actually doing. Theres one that is the equivalent of rolling off the tone on a passive bass.....the other two - no idea!
At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs... That sounds like you've got it in passive mode and you've not found the passive/active switch. Does one of the pots pull up, that will then make it active and the other 2 pots are your EQ. Well that's how my SS1 works. It would be a steal at £750 btw. I love mine.
 2.
Does anyone out there have selling dilemmas? Any thoughts about downsizing and not downsizing? Maybe I'm looking at this all wrong and getting too attached. I would be interested to hear anyone's views.
Yes, all the time. I'm new to bass and, like the OP, I'm lucky enough to have 4 basses. I have: Squier P-Bass , Warwick SS1 4 string, LTD ESP Fretless 5, Wishbass fretless 4. I see it as a way of having a variety of sounds, tones, feel etc. but I've only been playing 3 years. I sometimes wonder if my learning is slowed down by using more than one size/feel bass. Am I causing myself confusion by having 4 and 5 strings? I don't play in a band, I don't have the spare time to rehearse or gig in a band (due to commitments to work and ageing parents). So even wonder why I'm even learning if, as some BCers tell us; bass isn't a solo instrument. All I know is I love the tone of the bass and most of the time I do enjoy it, but do I need so many basses? Would I be better with fewer?
 3.
Just received a set of 4 Fender style tuners from Richard which are perfect! Even more so considering the fact that I bought them from Richard after he saw my post about which tuning pegs to get for a short scale bass.. Suffice to say, he's definitely a very genuine person to deal with and yet another Basschatter I'd highly recommend to others here on the Forum! Thanks Rich
Many thanks Nik. You're a great guy to deal with too. Thanks also to all the other good folk here who've left me feedback. I've never had a bad experience dealing with anyone who's posted here. Or any BCer for that matter. Thanks guys! Richard
 4.
I'm inclined to think they're like any ultra-budget bass - pot luck whether you get a decent, useable one or a hopeless piece of junk. J.
Which is what makes ebay a raffle. I'm getting to think 50% are basses being moved on again and again. FWIW if I've got a good bass I sell it in BC. If it's a dog it goes to ebay. I don't suppose I'm alone.
 5.
I hope he's managed to get rid of the nibbling rodents from his workshop...
Phurr.. where have you been!?? This is called "shabby chic"! They rave about it in the John Lewis catalogue and in "Home and Garden"!
 6. I had a bass in the loft. Untoched for 25 years. The TR was stuck when I got it out. WD40 worked with that one.
 7. Fwiw, talking about this neck being old; have you ever considered the true age? The wood was probably 50 years old when they cut the tree down.
 8. I think you're probably doing the right thing as you are. I don't think flat or propped up makes much difference. The pressure of its own weight agaist a wall is insignificant compared to that of the truss rod. personally I'd losen the rod off totally as its got no strings to give the force that the rod is designed to pull against. But as long as you keep an eye on it to make sure there's no real change you should be ok.
 9.
I think that's pretty lame actually. Im a lefty and most of my playing has been done on right-hand instruments by flipping them round and playing them upside down. This doesn't stop me from setting them up to make sure they play well. His excuse makes no sense to me. Never heard of a Luthier who can't make an instrument of its orientation.
I take it you don't know that the guitar style instrument was invented by a left handed man. Its designed so your most hand with the most dexterity is doing the fretting. So in fact all right handed players are in effect playing left handed. So as a lefty, stop flipping the instrument over, you should play it as it was designed. (If only life were so simple)
 10.
Modern Arias are surprisingly good & highly underrated - if this had been a lined fretless, I've been all over it. J.
When I got my first unlined I thought this too, but you soon get used to it and your finger discipline gets better and your hearing improves.
 11. Gak have a Contour 15" going for £249. It's a return that's been given a new power supply. I'm tempted myself, but if you want it you go for it. http://www.gak.co.uk/en/genz-benz-contour-ctr500-115t/70606
 12. How about this. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/220888-aria-sb-40-fretless-bass-in-black-with-lightweight-hard-foam-case-now-l110/page__p__2333560__hl__fretless__fromsearch__1#entry2333560 Worth every penny if you ask me.
 13. I sold a set of tuning heads to Nik. He's a nice genuine guy. Good to deal with. Many thanks Nik Cheers Richard
 14. I don't think anyone here is knocking Hadrien F'. He's in a major league for sure. All I'm suggesting is that bass playing is like all things in life, success is all in the preparation. That prep can be in creating re-usable prepared sectuons of solos at one level, or simply practice at another level (mine as it happens)
 15.
Thanks man, this year i will definitely be working on writing and getting my own music out there, have so many idea's but never had the time to properly structure it all, and arrange musicians to rehearse/record it, so will be on that this year hopefully! :-) Like i sort of mentioned in response to Mike, all the Greats have there signature chops and licks practiced for sure! but depending on what musical situation they are in, is how they act on using them, or leaving them behind, i've seen a few different video's where i have heard Victor or Hadrien use the same lick/phrase/chop! but the way its structured or put together and built upon is all on the fly, unless its a studio situation then mostly i believe it would be composed or thought out slightly before being recorded! thats just IMO! Thankyou, about the title, i tried to stay clear from the word 'Transcription' and mention that i've transcribed it (it is written down in a rough way at the moment) and performed it, but rendition does make sense! the transcriptions will be up on my website in the near future, so when its up and running please check back if you're interested (www.billbanwell.com)
I liked the solo posted second better. It's got fewer notes, but loads more groove and passion (IMHO) As you say, I suspect most of the greats put solos together using "building blocks" of solo pieces. Doing this allows them to go into familiar areas and leaves them time to plan and think, but as Bilbo says... it works sometimes better than others. Hats off to you again.
 16. First. .. sorry. more to the point; its a great bass. Buy it.
 17. Gulp... Eating humble pie as we speak.. Serial number: h11722705 Article number: 1264020000GDFMAFWW produced: 2005-08-31 Description: Streamer Stage I, 4-string Natural Oil finish Flamed Maple A body Flamed Maple neck Gold hardware
 18. The one in my avatar is a 2005 SS1. According to Warwick it's swamp ash.
 19. That's a good price. Its probably swamp ash. To my knowledge Warwick don't use maple.
 20.
Well done Bill - Hadrien is a fiend on the bass and his lines are very complicated - I don't think any bass player (and I mean any) can truly match the clarity he gets at such high speed but you did a great job on this - it's one of his more melodic solos and one I really like as well - the scarest part is that he 'made this up on the spot...' - all said and done your work on this is great. I must do more of this kind of thing myself but I'm more focused on developing my own style - I'd love to hear a solo by YOU on some changes etc - I'm sure doing this kind of thing massively helps develop your own technique and ideas.
Surely it's, therefore, easier for Hadrien if he makes it up on the spot, because he's simply playing what "feels right". He isn't listening to a track and a youtube vid trying to copy someone. So, congrats Bill on an excellent job. I'd like to hear some of your own grooves. That said.... with all the greats; do they ever REALLY make things up entirely on the fly? Aren't they really practised and prepared before hand?
 21.
Assuming similar tone & efficiency, why would a 40w driver be less loud than a 30W one ? (I doubt that a 30W amp has a 30W speaker...)
To answer your question:
... Putting in a higher wattage speaker may in fact make it quieter as your amp could be (and probably is) too weedy to drive it fully. If your existing speaker is 8ohms then replacing it with a similarish 4ohm one should get you a bit more oomph. But at the end of the day a 30w amp is pretty much a 30w amp.
22. If I may ask another question here, if the OP were to fit a 40w speaker, it would be slightly less loud, but am I right that the amp is less likely to blow the speaker? If he wants more volume, as I understand it, he should buy a small cab to plug in, giving more 30w speakers, is this right? (This is an academic question - I doubt a 30w combo will have an o/put for a cab. Nor will he find a cab small enough for a 30w amp to drive it) Actually, the OP will do well to trade up and buy a 60 or 120w Roland Cube, or similar.
 23.
What software do you use? I've tried to write out my own notes above tab and it looks ridiculous. I'm looking for an app or something cheap I can use. I went looking to see if there was a stencil of notes/rests I could use, just like a school chemistry stencil, but couldn't find one. Maybe I ought to invent one and make a fortune
Musescore (www.musescore.org) is free and does the music scores and plays it back, but won't do tabs. I find it really good though.
 24. What Hamfist says is right. I think if you're buying used you have to be prepared to go and be a "tyre-kicker". The seller won't like it but if its got things wrong or the wrong sound then you have to say "no thanks" and walk away. I think there are probably a % age of friday-night instruments that get moved on a lot. So you need to keep your eyes open.
