1. If you're getting excessive buzz on the neck at the 14th and above, then that would seem to me that at that point the action is too low. So I think shimming the neck is going to make this worse. I would have thought you need to raise the bridge height slightly to cut the buzz, then slightly increase the tension in the neck using the truss rod, lowering the action overall. I suggest you take a look at the video on the set up of the GWB bass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mLp8TI0tu8 As for the neck width. Well this is what it is. If you don't like it then that's a personal taste thing and the set up won't change that and it's your choice if you want to sell it.

Help!!

Welcome to Basschat. Sorry to say this as I know you're new here, but in the "introductions" we normally just say "Hi" here. If you want help, why not post your question in the "Bass Guitars" section? Also, if everyone who wanted some advice posted a thread entitled "Help!!", or something like that, how the hell could we tell one thread from another? Good to have you around btw. I'm sure someone will be along who can help you. Cheers
3. Interesting topic; I've been thinking about this recently too. (This could save me the cost of a new bass!) I've got a Squier P-bass that I rebuilt with Hipshot bridge, SD Quarter pounders and good pots etc. It's fitted with Rotosound RS66 45-105 round wounds. To my ears it sounds too light-weight. I'm looking for a darker growl bass tone. I've been thinking of trying out some different strings any recommendations?
4.
Sadly I don't have the money for it.
You mean, not until you get payment on the completion of the auction of Mrs 99?
5.
lol no this time I thinks I'll put my feet up and settle in. I spend a good 50% of the working day over on the 'FretBoard' guitarist forum, but this place seems to be far less up it's own arse than over there.
LOL, well you know what they say about bassists.... 2 strings short of and ego trip.
because I got a £30 discount on the B3. Do keep up
Errr.. yeah, but if you have to spend £40, why not strings or a strap? or summat?
6. Welcome to BC and congrats on the B3. You'll enjoy that one. Just a thought.. what happens when the Boss comes back? Or do we only get the pleasure each year from 19/20th of December to 1st Jan?
7. I'm learning to read and I like to play proper "tunes" rather than play the bass-line without any backing. I can't be bothered with using a CD or mp3. I use a drum machine for keeping the rhythm. So what I often do is re-type the score for the music into Musescore (FOC application you can download from www.Musescore.org). I re-type it exactly as you see it on the page. You can then get the program to play it to make sure it sounds right. Then I change the clef to the bass clef, select all the bars and take it all down an octave or 2. You can then also make any other changes you want, such as key etc. Then save it and print it or save to PDF.
8. Hi All, Happy Christmas to you all. In my email today I got a link to a free PDF book from Musescore. It's free in the public domain, so I thought some here might like it. It's all on the treble clef, so it's good reading practice for those learning that one. Edit: See the entry below from Stephen Cox; the author! http://gigbooks.freemusiced.org/ Musescore is a free program for writing scores, so you may like to try that too. They also have a public store where you can search for scores by others. Enjoy! Richard
9. I was looking at it again yesterday. I'd prefer a jazz, and in natural wood and it looks a bit of a flat slab. But I'm tempted to ask him to make one for me.
10. Just a thought; how about you and your brother leave together and start a new band? (Sack the rhythm player) Other than that, how about if both you and your brother both turn your volume down at a rehearsal, would the other guitarist notice if it's so blatant that all he can hear is himself?
11. Here's a version for violin and electric bass. The clarinet can play the violin part. You can play the bass... naturally http://static.musescore.com/32039/d534629c48/score.pdf Here's the mp3 version http://static.musescore.com/32039/d534629c48/score.mp3 Both of the above show you the bass part first, then the violin joins in. I'd change that arrangement, but that's just me.
12. Just a question here... Are you saying you've got the Piano, guitar etc.,. parts for some pieces and want to have the bass parts to go with those pieces? Or are you saying you have the piano/guitar music and you want to transpose those parts so you can play it on bass as a solo piece? (Stands back and takes cover ready for an onslaught of BCers saying "a bass is not a solo instrument". Even though Jaco P said bass players should learn to play everything, treble clef, bass clef, tunes, everything..)
13. Record companies need to sign new vocalists to keep the public interested and buying recordings. But its no problem for then to keep rolling out the same session musicians, drum- machine technicians come to that.
14. When I used to be on TB I thought it was good, but tbh I think if you want an opinion before buying an item, there maybe folk who can give good info who're not "in the club". Also, most technical stuff may crossover from one make to another. EG, if you've got a question on a G&L, then a Fender owner would prob have the answer too, or even just someone who knows about instruments generally. So, I'm happy to be in the "BC" club, thanks.

16.
Tell you what, lend me the £2k and ill see if it is as good as you say!
It isn't. No way. Actually it's awful. I'm saving you from yourself really. In fact I've gone round Gary's a couple of times and I'm working on getting it road-worn. But it's a slow job. It's going to take a long time. Give me a few years ad we might just get there.
17.
Er! The decal said my surname and the name and date of the tour I've been doing this year and next, not Fender. If I made something i'd make sure everyone knew i did it. Believe! I do have an ego! Thanks for the other advice tho!
LOL... WOOPS!!! Great sounding decal. I take it all back and now busy eating humble pie as we speak.
18.
Can someone lend me a couple of grand?
I would, but you wouldn't like it. Its not roadworn at all. In fact there's no real scratches on the whole bass. And there's no characteristic dings or buckle rash. Also, the neck/FB is nice and smooth straight with no frets sticking up anywhere. It's so like a new bass, you really won't like it at all. (Much)
19. By using sand paper in your hand, each finger applies a different pressure to the sandpaper, so the sanding is uneven. The purpose of a sanding block is to make sure your pressure applied to the sandpaper is applied evenly over the contact surface. The pressure applied to the finer grades can be about the same as to the rougher grades. I don't use wet and dry. Using wet abrasive paper lets water soak into the wood, making some areas swell and stand higher and gives you uneven sanding of the wood. As far as the decal is concerned - serves you right. I don't agree with faking instruments, there's enough rip-off sharks in world without you becoming one too. But that's just me. Edit: If you built a custom kit car would you stick a Ford logo on the bonnet? It's the same thing IMHO.
20.
Yeah, can't go wrong with a decent 2ndhand P-bass, if you want 2ndhand, and as long as you try before you buy. But if it doesn't have to say 'Fender' on the headstock, you could consider getting a really excellent brand new instrument that is very well suited to the sounds you are into: the MTD Kingston CRB. You can get one for £429 from Bass Direct. That's a hell of a lot of bass for the money there.
I'd go as far as to say when buying 2nd hand I'd be wary of buying anything with "Fender" on the headstock. If you don't know the finer points of the Fender designs it's so very easy to buy a re-badged bitsa as there are so many on flea-bay these days. There have been loads of threads on here where the experts are laughing at a faked Fender, saying its clearly a fake. Yet when I look I can't see what gives it away. So I'd definitely say, be careful on buying a 2nd hand Fender.
21. Me too. His other items show some good designs too. I recon he'd take commissions too, such as a bass with the scull, for example. WRT the neck pocket, as long as it's in need of being made bigger, I'm sure it's nothing that can't be sorted.
22. I've heard of folk accusing a bass of being a coffee table, but what do you recon to this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carved-alder-Guitar-Body-for-Precision-Bass-/261344387398?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cd956e146 I've been in the business of importing furniture from Poland, so I know this will be hand carved.
23. Mrs G is a pianist. For your budget you would do well to get a good electronic keyboard. But make sure its designed to be like a piano and has weighted keys. Music shops do sometimes do a hire scheme where you can pay as you go. Sometimes paying for it out right over time. Bottom line from Mrs G- don't buy a £300 piano.

Nice groove... Did I pass?
25.
No problem Bassistclem, thanks for the posts keeping it pinned on the front sheet. Grangur - as you may have read earlier....................I do have chocolate hobnobs if that helps.
And THAT's another thing!! You're NOT helping. No, No, No, No. I don't need it. I don't. No. Seriously, I don't. But it does look nice....... And I do like chocolate Hob Nobs..
