Can they drop any lower than 195 quid?
Actually this one makes me laugh. All that relicing and then "no fret wear". How can that look genuine? I wouldn't pay 195 for this myself. But I was thinking generally.

How long do you folks recon the fashion for wrecked instruments will last? Will they always sell, or will they drop in price? Thoughts?

The one thing I'd add it you'll save a lot of money if you only buy a bass after you've actually had one just like it on your hands and played it for half an hour, even if it was only acoustical. I've bought far too many instruments and found straight away that it's not for me. "Bargains" on Gumtree and Ebay that will lose you a packet if it's not right for you.
Ah well. The great guys at Rothko and Frost informed me that all the bright solid colours are based on a white resin so getting an exact daphne blue translucent would be next to impossible. He did say he would try to get as close as possible with a custom mix but couldn't guarantee it would be exact. Also, as the colour coat would be opaque so it would be difficult to keep the grain showing anyway due to the coats it would need for coverage. Fair do's, Simon at R&F REALLY knows his stuff about the history et al of the trad Fender finishes and the rest. We were chatting for ages about it all, so defo gonna shop with confidence there. They are the real deal. I think I may just do the body in Tru-Oil then clear sanding sealer with a can of satin clear nitro on top. Should look nice and most importantly give the body more protection than before without compromising the tone much. If I do get bored of the natural then it'll be prepped ready for a colour coat anyway so won't be too much of a headache.....mmmm that Daphne Blue though.. hmm. Seafoam green is pretty sexy too... oh god! Sanded it back now:
Just a small point... you're thinking of using Tru-Oil, and then spraying? I've never used "Sanding Sealer" but unless it's got some amazing properties it wont stick to an oiled surface. In fact if you oli the wood nothing much will cover it without it staying as a sticky mess. Before painting with anything to seal the wood you need to get rid of any remains of oil on the wood. Before painting/spraying any oiled wood you need to wash the wood in loads of white spirit and then sand down the wood to get a smooth finish. Finish off in 400grain sandpaper (or finer) before spraying.

Hey! It sounds like we have another "experienced" member in our ranks? I'm sure you'll find lots of inspiration for GAS here and the Aria will soon have company. It's good to hear from you and to BC

How about a Fender Jazz? See my sig...

Mine plays well. It would sound great too, if only it had a good bassist to play it.

Hi Steve, I started really getting into playing bass when I was onlt a youngster of 50ish as well. I'm now pushing 54 or 55, I forget. Welcome buddy. Richard (can answer to to Seve if it helps)

+1 on the comments above. I had one as a travel bass when I was driving up and down the country and I didn't want to risk damage to my main bass. If you're doing one up, be careful how much you spend. Costs of parts can stack up fast.

Are high end basses for investors or musicians?
Grangur replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
The OP sounds like a retailer justifying why: 1 - He wont carry too many high priced instruments in stock - that would give him cash-flow issues. 2 - You should buy what he has in stock - moving his stock. That said I think there can be cases where poor players can hope expensive instruments provide a short-cut to playing better. It won't work, of course, but it won't stop some of us.. -

Soundcloud recordings added. - click here All recordings made though a Zoom B3 straight to the pc, using Mark Bass emulator and recorded in Audacity. Bridge and Neck recordings done with the one pot turned right up and the other right down. The Series mode recording was done with the 2 pots turned up, as turning either down kills the volume of both. All recordings were done with the tone/treble-cut turned off. Enjoy! Excuse the cr@p playing. It will sound SO much better in your hands I'm sure

Strings echo - has anyone else had this?
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Possibly a damaged string core?
Many thanks, but it's on all strings.
That sounds like the signal processing of a modeling amp. I think they all do it to some extent. The signal processing probably "gates" itself once it decides there is not enough signal to process anymore. I've certainly noticed similar on a Line6 Studio 110, can't remember about the cube, that was too long ago!
You're probably right. It's probably me being to critical. It's not really noticeable unless you stop playing and really listen. In a gig it wouldn't notice. Thanks all the same guys. -
Hi All, After some soul searching I've decided to let someone else have the pleasure of this cool, smooth sounding Fender MIM Jazz. It's white, 4 string, and complete with Fender covers. It's got new pots and strings and an interesting series/parallel switch; a push-pull switch on the tone pot. She's in very near mint condition. No scratches or dings anywhere. More pictures can be seen here In parallel mode her tone is deep and mellow, but turn up the bridge pup and you get the classic Fender growl. In series mode, crank up the volume and she opens up and flows like a full bodied bottle of vintage red. Drink in that sound and get intoxicated! In a word, she Rocks! She can be delivered to you by hand FOC to most places in London, Anglia, south and south-east etc. Otherwise she can be securely packed and shipped in the UK FOC. Worldwide shipping at additional cost. You can also come and try her out. In the meantime... Here's a link to the soundcloud All recordings were done with treble cut off and the volume of the respective pup right up. On the Series mode recording both pups were turned right up. Thanks for looking. Feel free to ask any questions. Trades:- I'm really after the cash in truth. I could be tempted by a nice 4-string, blonde Ibanez with Bartolini Soapbars. OR a nice Warwick. Many thanks Richard

Learning to read the dots - Sheet music to learn with
Grangur posted a topic in Theory and Technique
Hi All, I've been learning to read and I've found so much of the music you see for bass either has tabs under it, so it pulls your eyes down and you go back to playing-by-numbers, or the score has no rhythm or tune to it. I saw Jaco Pastorius in a video saying that to learn you should read and play anything and everything, well I got started and here's a few I've been using. I thought others may find it useful: If others are interested I could post more Beginner: Amazing Grace - easier than Victor's version Autumn Leaves - G Major - The bass line to the well known jazz standard. To play the "tune" see the score in the "Advanced" section - it's not too advanced really Frere Jaques - Traditional French song God Save the Queen - Uk National Anthem - various keys Happy Birthday Ode to Joy - Beethoven Silent Night - Christmas hymn Streets of London - Ralf McTell The Star Spangled Banner - USA national anthem Walking Bass Blues - a cool walking bass line from Stuart Clayton's book "Crash Course Bass". - A good book, worth a good read, like all of Stuart's books. Wedding March - Wagner Intermediate: Beauty and the Beast - G Major Crash Bass Timed Ex, Day 21 - This is a cool simple bass line from Stuart Clayton's book "Crash Course Bass" (reproduced with the kind permission of Stuart Clayton) Crash Course Bass Exercise 38 - This is one I find challenging as there's a few places on the fretboard you can play it and it makes you move about a bit - Thanks Stuart. (reproduced with the kind permission of Stuart Clayton) Good King Wencaslas - Christmas Carol with no reference to Christianity that I know of... strange that. I Could Have Danced All Night - C Maj - From the hit Musical "My Fair Lady" - (This calls for a low C. If you don't play a 5, play it on the A string) Minuet En Sol, by JS Bach Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens / Traditional The Blue Danube - Johann Strauss. This gives you an intro to ledger-lines and octaves; forcing you up the dusty end. The Sound of Silence - Paul Simon She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain - Traditional song Simple Gifts - A Quaker hymn. Meet me on the Corner - Lindisfarne - bass part Transcribed by MrCrane Advanced: Autumn Leaves - This is the score of the tune, not the bass line. To hear what this is meant to sound like, click here and listen from 0.50 onwards. Colour My World - Chicago On this one the chord names shown may not be right. They relate to the piano score which I worked from and simplified somewhat. If you don't know this one, you can click here to get the youtube It's really only arpeggios, but not the most obvious ones on the fretboard. La Marseillaise - French National Anthem Groups and others: Sunshine of Your Love - Cream (Bass - Beginner) If others can post more links that would be great. -
Hi All, This is a truly solid, great condition, Fender Jazz. It's made in Mexico and sounds amazing with a deep bass voice and powerful growl. The covers are original Fender and complete the cool looks. No damage - no dings, no scratches, etc The pick guard was changed by another BC member. (From The Bass Doc I believe) Strap-locks added. Series/Parallel switch added; this is a push/pull on the tone pot. The sound in Series mode has to be heard. It sounds so open and resonant; you'll love it. Delivery by hand is available in most of the south of the country, PM me for details, but generally if you're below "The Wash" / Bristol you're in luck. Depending on the final sale price I may ship for free. Thanks for looking and enjoy the pics More pics available. PM me if you're interested.
