I just ventured onto the Squier chat forum (ok, I know. It won't happen again). On there I saw a thread of a guy who's taken his beloved bass, given it a new body and new electrics, wiring the pots in series/parallel with a push/pull switch. He still calls it a Squier. At what point should you no-longer attribute a bass to a maker? I've got a Squier, resprayed it, Bart pups, Hipshot bridge, new elects and new machinesheads. I'm tempted to sand the brand off of the headstock. Who's right?

I used to work in software and we used to give software away. It was called "seeding the market". I wonder if Fender see fakes with genuine necks as exactly the same thing? By selling a neck you're getting £120(?) from someone who would never buy an actual Fender. I too am amazed about the number of Fender necks on ebay. Whatever happened to the bodies? They can't all have got smashed by "rock-stars"

All I've found from Fender is the first few letters telling you the factory and the next number tells you the year.

Agreed totally. I bought one recently and I mailed the seller when I bought it asking for assurance it was a genuine Fender. It to turn out to be a Squier with a decal. One complaint later - Ebay judged in his favour - a Squier IS a Fender; made by the same company isn't it? I love the sound of a Fender and feel tempted, but I wouldn't touch a Fender on Ebay with a barge-pole.

If they can't pack a bass for a courier they booked, what makes you think they can pack it just because you booked the collection?

Gary Willis does the same. That's why he has the ramp on his bass; to stop him digging in too much.

I've measured mine and the ones I have are slightly smaller. I also only have 3 (and a rattly one). So I can't offer a set. The spigot size is about 14mm though.

They are short scale and light weight. I was offered the chance to buy a perfect one back in the 70s for 40.00. As a kid at the time that was more than I could afford

This is the first bass I had the experience to play. I wont say I "owned" it. It was one on loan I lifted from under my bro's bed. Damn. (You don't see folk's locations when you're using the mobile version on a phone) With patience and a little persistence he should be able to get the result though. Even if the dents dont completely recover he wont have to sand it as low. A good place to get wood lacqure from is www.morells.co.uk. for an Ibby I'd use natural matt lacqure.

Hey Leen, you're lucky it's a timber bass, not a painted body. You can do a lot of the repair yourself. What you need to do is sweat the wood back out. Don't use filler. First clean the debris out of the holes. Use a toothbrush if necessary, or something... whatever. Then plug in the clothes iron. Mrs Leen will tell you what it looks like Get a soft, old cloth and a bowl of water. Dip the cloth in the water and put a small piece of the wet clot over a dent and get the tip of the iron and heat the cloth/dent. Doing this will normally cause the wood to swell and the dent will recover. If not go find a Stanley knife and take a look at the dents and cut the wood WITH the grain. DON'T go across the grain. Just do small cuts, don't go hacking at it. Then steam the wood with the cloth/iron again. When the wood has swollen back out you'll need let it dry out. When dry you need to sand the wood to get rid of any rough bits. Finish it off with really fine grain paper (at least grade 350, finer if you can get it). Sand it WITH the grain, not across it. After this it'll look a ton better than it did. Finish off by re-applying the finish - oil or lacquer; whatever it has already. But get the proper stuff for wood furniture, not car paint lacquer. And NOT paint-on varnish or it'll look cr@p. PM me if you need more info Then meet me down the pub and buy me a beer. CBbass, thanks for the pics. They look as I hoped. Please can you also measure the diameter of the spiggot that the strings wind onto. We want to make sure they're the same size. Maybe you could also measure the distance between centres of the fixing holes too; one pair, the other pair and between the pairs. Actually, those heads come apart, maybe all you need is the "key" part?

Maybe this is the work involved in getting to the truss rod and reinstatement (lost in translation maybe). I respectfully suggest Roonjuice gets in touch with Warwick and asks THEM not us. You need to ask them to itemise that bit; give an explanation of the work involved. If you're lucky it may be a mistake it being on there at all.

When I've removed the OF it mostly involves washing and sanding.

Yep, depending on the model you have that could make it cheaper to buy a new (used) bass! Have you asked Warwick if they will sell you the parts?

Make sure you pack it well. But before you do, what does actually need to be done? There's a comment about the truss rod. What's that about? Also, are you looking to change the colour or something?

I found some rough bits, so it's back to Halfords for another can of primer. I' know I'm a perfectionist, but if I don't get it right and leave some lump or dimple it will grate with me. Colour: blue. I'll post pics as soon as I can. Thanks for the interest.
