@Hellzero I know I'm derailing the thread a bit here, but you still aren't getting it. I agree Balsa is soft in touch and texture, but it is a Hardwood. There are other woods that are tough as nails, but are technically a Softwood by virtue of their grain density.

Ibanez GSR205 New Body Shape Finished FOR GOOD THIS TIME!!

Great that the lesson was learned with pine, rather than a nice piece of swamp ash. Nice one. Not meaning to be funny. Life is a learning journey. "Measure twice, cut once" as they say. -
Dear Sir, we speak of the very same. It is the soft-squidgey wood you can stick you finger nail into and make toy gliders from. Balsa is a Hardwood. https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardwood But the wood we need for the fingerboard of a fretless does need to be resilient to scratches and so hard in its character.
-
As @Hellzero says, its a Harley B. Bought for the princely sum of £169! It came with rounds. There already were a few marks on the neck under the B string. I might well change them, if I decide to keep it. "Hard" and "soft" woods are a strange thing. Balsa is, technically speaking, a "Hard" wood. The terms Hard and soft, relating to wood actually refers to the density of the fibres of the wood, not it's resilience to marks and damage.

There are some amazing basses here. I have a fretless Warwick 4, but wanted to try out 5 strings and using roundwound strings on a fretless too. So I ordered a new addition from Thomann. It's an interesting addition, in that it's 5, but really light at 4.2Kg. Mahogany body, and roundwound strings. Body: Mahogany Neck: 7-Piece ovangkol/maple/nato neck through Fingerboard: Black Walnut Nut width: 40 mm Scale: 864 mm (long scale) Pickups: 2 ceramic bar single coils Active tone control Black hardware Diecast machine heads Bridge with 5 individual saddles Colour: Natural satin

As someone who's not really into relics, the pain must come when the lender wants compensation for a repair on a ding, and the borrower sees it as having "done you a favour".

This is something I picked up this week from Thomann. IF there's no interest here I might return it. All I'm looking for is to get my money back an give someone else the opportunity to own this. It's a Harley Benton HBZ-2005FL NT Deluxe Series. It's a Deko bass, but the only "problem" is the D stamp! The weight: 9.25Lb ; 4.2Kg Brand new in the box and with tags. Here are pictures of the actual bass. The wood looks stunning and it feels good. I simply cannot justify keeping yet another bass. Should never have jumped on this bargain. It comes with D'Addario XL roundwound strings. Body: Mahogany Neck: 7-Piece ovangkol/maple/nato neck through Fingerboard: Black Walnut Nut width: 40 mm Scale: 864 mm (long scale) Pickups: 2 ceramic bar single coils Active tone control Black hardware Diecast machine heads Bridge with 5 individual saddles Colour: Natural satin https://m.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbz_2005fl_nt_deluxe_series.htm The bass is in CM23 4DH : East Hert, but I would ship at cost.

All fair points. So, as you say; we don't really know enough to have an opinion. What we also don't know is the value of this equipment to either party. A £300 bass is a lot of money to one person, another wouldn't think it's significant.
-
Without knowing if the loan bass is a £60 Encore or a £400 fair to middle bass, it's hard to know what is do. What we do know is the OP values the friendship. How much does the mate value this friendship? Enough to pay out for a bass and hand it over? Also, why can't they use their own bass? Too much chance of damage/loss? But he's prepared to risk YOUR bass. IS he a friend? Really?

Hi Alex, A big welcome to Basschat. You say about being a "freshman", so are you in the US? We seem to be getting more folk from the US these days.

That rout for the bridge pup looks a little on the large size. My guess is someone made a mess of things and is now half to get just some of their money back.

I've been GASing after some in Japan. But the idea of 20% VAT isn't good

This is the part I find objectionable about his listings. I've bought Deko instruments. I've sold a couple in when I find them not for me. I've also returned a couple ti Thomman. They are perfectly happy to have them back. Only yesterday I took deliveryof a Deko 5 string, through neck fretless. It's quite stunning. Weighs under 4Kg and all good. There's a couple of points I'm not so happy with, but they would be issues with a perfect one too; nothing wrong with it to make it "faulty".

Was it nitro?

What theory has your teacher been trying to teach you? Also, if you want to recap on any theory, check out Ariane Cap on NoTreble on YouTube. Also @la bam is right. If you have space in life to be in a band, do it.

Ibanez GSR205 New Body Shape Finished FOR GOOD THIS TIME!!
Grangur replied to Jimothey's topic in Build Diaries
Where did you get the template shape from? I ask this because simply drawing round a Warwick body won't work. The reason for this is the neck you have is 22 fret. Warwick necks are 24 fret. So if you simply reproduce a Warwick body shape and fit a shorter neck, the scale length will be shorter than 34", which is OK, but the 12th fret n the neck won't be in the right position for a shorter scale length because the first 12 frets will be 17" not half the length of the shorter scale length. ... or maybe you've already covered this? The other thing you need to consider is the weight of the 5 string neck. The body weight needs to be a suitable weight to counterbalance the 5 string neck. Sorry if this is being boring and pedantic, but you're going to a lot of trouble to do it, so it needs to be right. -

Won't be long until he's teaching you! Great playing. -

Yes, we went to "Motown the Musical". It's some time since we went and the lasting memory of "The Buddy Holly Story" is much more lasting, although we saw that a longer time ago. I'd put "The Jersey Boys" above it too. I've seen TBHS a few times. Don't know as I'd rush to see MTM as readily, but it was good for an evening's entertainment. Somehow the sound, for me at least, didn't quite capture the magic of Motown. At the time I couldn't put a finger on it, but my guess is they didn't quite hit the bass lines of Jamerson. Can't say, however, that the question is burning so much in my mind that I have to lash out the price of tickets, train, meal, etc, etc,. Don't let me put you off though. I'd like to hear the thoughts of others.

If it does its job, then you've proved it is what you want. So the next stage is to get one made in ebony; to look black next to the pickups. Ebony will be a bit more expensive, but look and feel right.

Hey cool. Does it work well for you? If the pups are lower than you're used to, have you thought of raising them?

Doing away with a push/pull knob on a preamp?
Grangur replied to ambient's topic in Repairs and Technical
There's space for a couple of turns of insulation tape round the battery. What bothers me is what will happen if the metal battery case shorts out some of the other contacts on a pot. If you don't have insulation tape, Sellotape or masking tape will be better than nowt. -

And you both live near Brum... Any chance of a meet up? On a side-note, it might only be me, but I'm also not a great fan of metal-case batteries rattling around in a box of electronic connections, with no insulation round the battery case. This is where something like an off-cut from an old cycle inner-tube would come in handy, or you could wrap it in a few turns of insulation tape. -
Hamer Scarab Bass (Gumtree/London)
Grangur replied to NancyJohnson's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The most telling words in the description, I would have said are, "very rare". If it was good there would have been more of them. For £800 you too can re-live those glorious days of your youth...
