  1. @TheGreek has raised some good points, @jeff.nicol_scotland. The bass you've selected has a particular sound. Is this selection based on a like for that sound, or is that based on looks? As @TheGreek says, you probably should try out some basses and don't overlook the fact that the amp and speakers make up a good contribution to the overall tone/sound.
  2. I've owned 3 Gear4Music L.A. basses. The first 2 were amazingly good value. After that, when I saw them selling slightly damaged ones I jumped in thinking I'd do it up. When I got it I found the newer bodies were much lighter. The balance of the body to neck wasn't as good as the older ones were. So I returned it to Gear4Music; which they were good about. Another good make for lower cost instruments is Westfield. There's also another thread on here with recommendations for budget basses that would be worth reading.

  4. Hi all, I'm having a clear out of my CDs . So I'm selling these for 50p for each CD. But minimum "Order Value" is £1. BUT BEING SOLD FOR 50p each. I've sorted them all alphabetically by the artist, and there's quite a broad range of music there, so there should be something for everyone. I'm selling each CD for 50p. More will be listed soon. Some may be a bit weird but can be useful as resource material. Postage up to 4 CDs will be £1. If buying more than 4 we can negotiate a price and postage options. Can you please PM me with what you'd like to take. Thanks! 5. The Restorative Finish Cream will probably be a soft wax polish, or a very fine rubbing down compound; like T-Cut that's used on cars
  6. So what Nitro polish do you have? Also, if the body isn't shining, why is this? Is it because of scratches, or dirt?
  7. I've googled "nitrocellulose polish" all it comes up with is types of nitrocellulose lacquer. So what "nitrocellulose polish" do you have? So what are you actually trying to do? Are you wanting to lacquer a body, or polish up the existing lacquer to make it shine? Edit: Top tip: Don't ever use any polish with silicone in it. Silicone makes the surface sticky and impossible to spray with paint of lacquer. Examples of this are: "Mr Sheen" and "Pledge"
  8. I'm in Stortford. There's @Mike who's in Chelmsford, but there are few teachers in the area. I know a fair bit of theory and would be happy to meet up and go over things and get you started.
  9. What are you trying to achieve? The nitro finish is naturally shiny as long as it isn't scratched. So normally I'd simply wipe it over with a slightly damp/soapy soft cloth. Then buff it with an old, soft towel.
  10. Not for more than 15 hours at a stretch.
  11. Every music shop also hopes not to be keeping any bass for very long. Just sayin' but can't say I know ths t much about the weight and effects of stress on rhe wood.
  12. @steantval has a good point there. Using Colourmagic or T-Cut is good for removing some scratches, but be sure to use a very soft cloth, otherwise the cloth will actually scratch the poly finish of a Fender type bass.
  13. Don't know what car polish @Delberthot is using, but don't ever use a silicone polish. Beware of car polish and certainly NEVER use spray silicone furniture polish, like "Mr Sheen" or "Pledge". The furniture industry curses spray polish as it wrecks the finish and makes it sticky and prone to attract dirt. Silicone is almost impossible to remove from the surface and will make it impossible to re-spray if you, or a future owner, ever needs to re-finish the bass. If you wish to clean a lacquered bass, simply wipe it over with a soft, damp cloth with a little detergent soap, and buff it up with an old towel. If there are sticky marks from stickers, use a little white-spirit to get that off.
  14. This bass is in great condition and has just been cleaned up, fitted with new strings and a low-action set up. Complete with strap and gig-bag. This is a used bass, so there are a few marks, but you're welcome to come round and try it. This bass is in East Herts, UK, but I would be happy to pack and ship it. 15. When using dropbox, go to each picture and right-click on the mouse (assuming you're using a PC). Select "Copy Image address". Then go to your thread-post and click "Past", or Ctrl+V. Pleased to be of help.
  16. Maple fretboards are lacquered. So oil won't soak in. It'll just sit there on top as a greasy mess.
  17. I guess this is the solution for some folk, when you're looking at the bass and thinking, "I bought it for £70 and the strings cost £30 to replace. Plus £30 setup..."
  18. I do oil rosewood fretboards with "Boiled Linseed Oil". Lemon Oil for fretboards might me ok, but I once tried to use it to oil and oil-finish body. The whole bottle disappeared and the body looked no different to the bare wood. So I stick with Linseed.
  19. "The neck relief may not have "Noticeably" changed, but has it "measurably" changed? Sitting where we are and you sitting where you are, do we know how close it was to having fret buzz before you started? The answer has to be to check over the setup.
  20. ^^This. I don't like MMs and I hardly ever use a bridge pup. But each to their own. I have this, but I could lose the Humbucker and save weight. I hardly use it.
  21. Doesn't it also depend on what you're wanting to play on the bass? If you're playing bass lines that call for a metallic zing, as with the MM humbucker or the bridge pup on the jazz, then P-bass, won't do that, because the pup is in the wrong location on the body.
  22. Ahhh... Yes. It's unlikely the LED lamp would like dimming in the same way. You say it's tungsten halogen. What wattage is the lamp? How long is the lamp on for? How warm does it get? The situation of the bass over the lamp isn't great for the bass. But if it doesn't get very warm, maybe it's ok. Just keep an eye on it and go and feel the strings and the bottom of the bass occasionally when it's on. If it's a 25w lamp it might be ok.
