Is there a reason for the apparent dislike for active basses...
....and under no circumstances should you be allowed to own a torch! Welcome Dave. After 50 years of bass your insights will, I'm sure be well worth reading. Your Wal looks nice too. Richard
One of the best things you can do is change your strings, amazing the difference a new set of strings makes
That's something I've wondered about a few times: How many basses get moved on because they don't have "that sound", that would be exactly right if you changed to a certain brand of strings you've never tried? OK it might not be strings, it might be pups or a tweak of the EQ, but the principle is the same. I've come to the conclusion that most of my GAS comes out of seeking a shortcut to being a better player. It simply doesn't work. Practice is the key, not Ebay.

Testing a bass for a few days , whats acceptable
Grangur replied to synthaside's topic in Bass Guitars
Would anyone really object to you cleaning it? I guess if you handed in back clean he could be offended at you thinking it needed cleaning. But if so, wouldn't he be offended if you asked? -
I thought you meant 6 string bass!! And there it is; you've gone to the darkside!

Now £125 Here's a nice bass for someone. It's one I picked up with the electrics not working. I've cleaned it, replaced the strings, the jack socket, pots and all wiring. Other than that it's original. It's in good condition and plays well.... well, that's to say it plays as well as any bass can in my hands. It feels good and has no dead spots on the neck that I can find. 22 frets PJ configuration, passive. Scale 34" Weight 3.67Kg = 8.09lb New Rotosound Legacy strings The nut is 40mm wide. The controls are VVT. I'm based near Stanstead, Herts/Essex, but can post or I travel a fair bit, so I might be able to deliver it myself. Here's a link for pictures. This could be like the pre-amp used by Overwater in a new bass for Scott Divine This is talked about in the thread asking "active or passive" http://youtu.be/czK3IjnM_oE
There are a lot of reversed P's around. They've been for decades. My Yammy BB1000S from '85 has a reverse P and to this time has the most musical (subjective to my ears) P sound i've heard. Oh, and back on topic, it's passive!
I also have an Ibanez EXseries with the reversed P too. Thanks though. -
https://youtu.be/czK3IjnM_oE Here's the video with Chris May from Overwater talking about the Overwater P bass. 9'20" is when they start talking about the active buffer inside the precision bass. From the subsequent videos with this bass, I not a fan. I think his Nate Mendel P bass sounds better to my ear, and I attribute at least some of that to the 'cleaner' sound the Overwater has. If you like that sound, then cool. Me, not so much. I have no dislike for other people playing active basses, but I just don't need one.
Thanks for posting that it's interesting to hear about that bass with the pre-amp. I've often wondered about why I can get Warwicks that ring a clean note. Even in passive mode, the notes ring clearly, where a Fender and many other passives sound mushy. The notes sound fuzzy to my ears. I'm sure that in a band context this doesn't matter and might even sound better, but I play on my own so I want the notes to ring clean. Thanks for that it was good, as well to hear them talking about the reversed P-bass pup. I like that too. Warwick basses use this and maybe that to adds to the tighter sound. In the Herts Bass bash in 2014, the Fender Mark Hoppus won the blind P-bass test. That has a reversed pup, so it seems there are many out there who like the reversed pup. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/238458-herts-bash-2-the-precision-test/ -
The problem I see with Photobucket is not only the problem for us uploading. If you post PhotoB a link on a thread, those following it from a mobile device will seldom get to see the pictures. You usually get some blurb about your device being infected with a virus. I see with PhotoB they do sell the option of going ad-free. It's tempting, but I would want those looking at my pictures to be unencumbered by ads too.

I didn't get the mail, but wouldn't object. Actually if BC wanted to sell advertisers space in a regular monthly advertising email I wouldn't have an issue; money to keep the site going and I can bin it. All as long as this is done as a service by BC and not passing out our contact addresses.
Is that his P bass or his 5 string you're talking about? I was under the impression his P bass was being run with an active buffer to combat signal degradation down the jack cable. If I'm wrong I stand corrected!
Scott has a dislike for all active basses. I know his Overwaters are passive. I don't know if his P-bass has any pre-amp in there. I would doubt it, but I know nothing for sure on that one. If it helps here's a video of him playing the red P. There are only 2 knobs. I know this doesn't nail it for sure, but it would limit any control over a pre-amp. http://youtu.be/5bWnTk6M3-U?list=RDIDgbfmT8hcM Here's Scott giving a run-down on the Scott Divine Overwater. At 5.09 he talks about the electronics http://youtu.be/QcMMJqreR-E?t=297 -
... However the case in point is Scott Devine's active buffer equipped Overwater P bass. I find it sounds too toppy and clean for me. Again, my opinion. Sometimes 'better' from a technical standpoint, isn't. I just like the sound and response of passive basses.
Scott's Over watter has a battery compartment at Chris's insistence just in case Scott changes his mind about having the bass passive. In fact Scott's Overwater is passive even if the Scott Divine signature bass may be active. I know about this because Scott talked about this in the Academy. -
Yes ^ in management terms, a sh!t sandwich!
Yeah, alright so you know this. And so will others here. But if anyone else learns from posting it and it saves anyone from getting p!$$ed off, it's worth saying it.
Just an update - I dropped on a used Tascam GB10 on ebay a couple of weeks ago. Onlly a few months old, but saved about 40 quid on new. Used it a couple of times and love it. Simple to use - still working out the best settings to use between it and the bass for best results, but it's a great way to re-learn some of the stuff I used to know.
Great piece of kit that. I've got one. you can slow-down or change the key as well. Belated welcome to BC too. Good luck with the practice
i don't believe it, and neither is the seller claiming that it is - "I believe the name has been added" , he says in the description. It's just up the road from me, I can pick it up for you if you fancy a bid!
errrrr.... no thank you. Grangur Towers will survive without an aging Encore. Especially as he says it's heavy. Unless I was to use it as a practice piece to do an "Andy rout-out and veneer" job on it.
Exactly this... I used my first DAW in april 2016 purely to enter this forum competition. I knew very little then (mmm!) but I remember Douglas(Dad) used to review all the entries. His views and criticism were a great help to me...I'm not sure that had I just been "slated" ,I would have bothered again. Just my musings......hope he's well. Nige
That is slightly different to what I was saying. Yet what you say is true. There are ways to give bad news. If I were critiquing your playing (if ever...) I would compliment you on something first, then tell you a place for improvement and bring with it advice, if I can on what would be within your grasp to improve it. Then end on a high too. That way you feel good about it. ... Nice avatar btw
THAT! There are so many fake/counterfeit "Fender"s around, selling with a "Fender" logo is dishonest, just waiting for some poor mug to buy one thinking they've got the real thing. (I also think Fender have muddied the waters a bit by branding Squiers as "Squier by Fender", so that people can advertise them as Fenders.)
NO!! Well, now tell me this isn't a true blue USA Fender http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OLD-HOUSE-CLEARANCE-BASS-GUITAR/112270155837 Encore I believe.
-
Many thanks guys. I changed the cap with another new one and all is now well in the world. It's got nice tone now. There's actually a danger of me liking its tone more than my Fender!
-
As it says above, this is a Fender USA, if you believe it http://www.ebay.co.u...AR/112270155837 Edit: Encore I believe?
Nickleback, how you remind me. Played when it "first" came out. I seem to remember it being all over MTV2 which was a rock channel then, for months before it was released. When it was released it was everywhere!!! We played it in a gig, was going down like a poo sandwich, and the drummer and I nodded to each other and killed it before the second chorus. Guitarist wasn't happy but we did him a favour. Playing charity things and festivals you do get some of your not typical audience. I would probably play some Motley Crue to wind them up, but our usual audience would love some of their more recognisable songs
Anything by Nickleback seems to be good to listen to, but almost sure to clear a dance floor. Now, take "Day trip to Bangor" now there's a good tune!
