I've generally been playing 4s and only recently moved onto 5s. It started with a Warwick Thumb. It took me ages to get into it. Then recently I bought a Corvette 5 from Painy of this parish. I fixed it up with new frets and it's good to play. My dilemma started just now. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 5 and ripping the frets out and bought a Peavey for the purpose. The Peavey wasn't really suited though as I'd have had to lower the bridge. So after getting down on a good groove tonight on a fretless 4 I'm sorely tempted to take the plunge and remove the frets from the Corvette. Does anyone here play a fretless 5? If I remove the frets from my Corvette will it be unsaleable?
So I raised it today at band practice, hoping to try some of the afore mentioned ideas, but everyone was happy with it the way it is lol.
If something is working isn't it normally the way that folk are reluctant to change it? Especially as its you wot writ it?
Hi Pat, Never done it myself. The other consideration would be if the fret board is wide enough to accommodate the extra width, or if it would push the strings too close to the edge and become unplayable...?
This ^ It would be a shame to spend the money and drill the holes, only to find it doesn't work.

The others are right, of course about leaving a bass in an un-heated loft space with the insulation under the bass - so it's out in the cold. Something you could do is remove the insulation in an area of the loft and then lay new insulation OVER the top of the bass; in a case, of course. Even better would be to see if a relative or GOOD friend has space to leave one or 2 basses in their house. I might be able to help of course

Applying solder to the back of Potentiometers
Grangur replied to essexbasscat's topic in Repairs and Technical
Matt or shiny makes no difference, this can be down to the solder. What matters is that the solder lies nice and flat to the body and doesn't look like a bobble standing on top of the pot. -
I went the bitsa route. Started off with a Squier Jazz neck I liked, found a cheap solid body on fleabay (the seller measured the neck pocket for me), and went on from there. How about this as a start? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201713748283
Looks good to me. I'd be inclined to keep both neck and body though, as the neck will be a good fit to the body. (At least to Squier standards), but I guess the OP is looking for a narrower neck.
Ha - looks an interesting gig! Probably a bit flamboyant for the likes of me though.... I got an email today from them. Apparently there were two bassists called George who responded to the ad and they assumed we were the same guy. The other George called off on them, hence the cancellation! They were really very apologetic and sound genuine. I'm tempted to give them a bash... I'll mull it over!
I'd read this as "the other guy we were hoping to get wasn't so hot after all." You're right, folk are inconsiderate. It isn't helped by the use of text to communicate. Cos folk aren't real until you have heard their voice. I would always arange the meeting on the phone; speaking.

Here's a good video on fitting a nut. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmUAuRs3Og0 I don't know what glue you're using, but I use PVA glue; that normally holds it in place. I hope this helps
This is in line with many of my comments. If you join a band just because you have " I want to be in a banditis "without any personal requirements or thought into what your looking for, your setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. No offence, but I'm not sure the OP understands band culture or his own responsibility in choosing a band to play in. All of his complaints can be avoided with more personal thought and preparation. Blue

I'm not sure what this has to do with my comment about joining a band. Blue
Sorry Blue. I was simply saying I thought your post was interesting. I was saying your post is interesting (The first one quoted here) What I didn't say was why I find it interesting. I think this sums up my situation quite well. Bands I would be attracted to join would generally be ones playing what i might consider to be simple music I can handle and cope with learning in the limited time I have available to me to learn the numbers. What's wrong with this it that sort of music doesn't really light my fire. So it would really be a case of "joinabanditis". The other stuff I wrote was simply general comments from reading other posts in the thread. I apologise for any confusion.

Sorry to hear about your problems and loss. Good luck in finding the bass. From the Police Web site: Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a burglary in which two guitars were stolen. The incident is believed to have occurred on Saturday, 29 October at a property in North Twelfth Street, Milton Keynes. The offender/s is believed to have gained entry to the property through the back door. A Gibson EB-2 Sunburst Hollow body single pickup bass guitar (pictured), which is more than 40-years-old, and a 1980s BBC00 Yamaha guitar, were stolen from the property. Investigating officer Det Con Chris Bigg, based at Milton Keynes police station, said: “This burglary has caused distress to the family, and these guitars hold great sentimental value to them. “I am therefore appealing to anyone who might have any information about this incident, or anyone involved in it, to come forward and contact Thames Valley Police on the non-emergency number 101.”
This is in line with many of my comments. If you join a band because you have " I want to be in a banditis "without any requirements or thought into what your looking for, your setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. Blue
That's interesting. So taking what's being said here in the thread. The way NOT to do it is answering small ads. So I look at the musicians I know: 1 - Mrs G who plays piano and has zero interest in performing 2 - Mrs G's brother, who's a professional classical cello player and no interest in performing anything other than classical. So the access is somewhat limited. I could start a band, but even though I'm 57 I have zero knowledge about running a band. That said, I'm no numpty, so I can imagine a lot of the logistical and marketing stuff. I would also need to invest in a PA and lights etc. The other thing I would need is time - to invest in getting the play-list together with sheets etc to hand out, marketing....
And????????
Exactly.
Your not alone, and the bedroom is the right place for some.... ...Most bad band experiences are our own fault. Blue
That's it. Blame me, why don't you? Humph... and that's from a man who's buddies just put Trump into a position of power! (Good luck, good friend. I hope you recover from the shock.) I have to agree. I didn't do much research before joining that band. What I should have done is insist on meeting them before the audition and ask questions. Also, what I've not said is I have a significant shortage of time to rehearse with a band due to my job. Not being in a band does bring it's frustrations too. There are times I do wish I had the chance to play a good groove with a band and get on down and play what comes into my head and feels right to a groove. But, you can't have it all.

Hi Richard, Ralf, Welcome to Basschat. It's always good to hear from new folk. Regrets, but I know nothing about AER gear. Maybe starting another thread to ask about that would be a good idea. With AER in the title it might get more attention from the right people? All the best Richard

When we start out on our journey into bass, we all here those iconic bass lines and we get stuck in there. Even before we know what we're listening to is a bass guitar or DB, we're falling in love with the richness depth of that tone. A sound so deep and thick you could almost cut a slice off and... OK, maybe that's too much, but you get it. But all these bass lines are normally in a band context. So we all go down the route of buying a bass and aspiring to play with others. Speaking for myself, I did all that. Never had an amp in those days, apart from plugging the bass into a reel-to-reel tape deck and using it's output stage. It worked. It sounded like nothing on earth with tons of unhelpful distortion. I hated it. I dropped it for a number of reasons and came back to bass when I was 50. I still aspired to being in a band. I got into a band and immediately came across the egos of others. The instructions to "play only the roots" as the keys were playing the bass line. Directions from guys who clearly didn't know the rudiments of music. (Like, you don't adjust the beat to fit in with the timing of the lyrics.) The sound of the band was a cacophony. I quit. Back home I can't be bothered with the faff of mp3 players and playing along with tracks. I read cello scores and transcribe other scores and really dig the tone of a bass playing, effectively, guitar-style. It's a challenge to my ability, but it's coming on and it's a hobby. I don't need to drive all over the country. I don't have folk pulling my playing apart, letting me down. I don't have to buy and store large gear that will only get used when away from the house. I don't have drunks telling me their dad plays better (or the likes). True, others may not agree that what I do is playing bass, but it suits me. I'm trying to get my head round something from "My Fair Lady" right now. I play almost every day and it fits in with my lifestyle as I play for any odd half-hours etc that I get the chance. "Why don't I change to guitar", you might ask? I just prefer the tone of a bass guitar to the twang of the treble-clef. I'm sure I'm not alone, am I?

But don't forget to review your insurance policy to make sure they're aware of the rise in the replacement value of your equipment. -
People like to blame the B****t nonsense for everything but I don't think that has a lot to do with American instruments. The pound has been widely reported as being artificially high in value for too long. Just resetting everything and it means lots of things will cost more.
Yes, I've heard this too. Funny thing is the £ has been about the same against to $ for about the last 64 years. So when exactly did this "over-pricing" of the £ actually start? What is good, of course is that as we live in a world economy, the value of your second-hand instruments will have also changed. So if the value of a bass was 1000Euro/$ then this is now worth about £900 where before is would have been £750 because the value in Euro/$ won't have changed, so it must follow that the value in £ must have changed. Looking at this another way; if the "Used" value was about 50% of the "New" value, and the cost new has gone up 20% then the used price must also be up 20%, surely? Oh I do so Love Mr Farage! (not) -
Installing a push/pull option on my Ibanez SR500?
Grangur replied to Greg.Bassman's topic in Repairs and Technical
The easiest way to do this would be to wire in an additional switch to 're-route one of the pups to connect straight to the Jack. But if you do this, make sure it also disconnects the battery from the preamp at the same time to be sure to avoid anything going wrong. But if it's not likely to be a problem, why fix it? -

If you can't get it set low without buzzing, does it need frets leveling and dressing? After all, the neck should be relatively flat as they're pretty well made.

Hate to tell you this but your photobucket link takes me to a virus -like page. I think it's probably a Photobucket ad. But it's not helpful to you. If you're going to use photobucket, embed the pics in your thread post. It makes it a lot better. GLWTS Also, tell us where you are located. That helps the sale too. When reading on a mobile phone we don't see that you're in Poland. Welcome to Basschat.
