Had to go to London today for work..... (VERY UNUSUAL) and whilst I was there after I accomplished my mission of course, I thought I'd pop along to Tin Pan Alley.... AKA Denmark Street. You know the thing, wanted a few bits= good excuse to wander around the shops slavering. + get to look at the Bass Cellar, always selling stuff on ebay and glossy ads in the comics. Well the staff were pleasent enough, and I wasnt pushing them for info or buying anything expensive so we got along fine. However the whole experience left me totally underwhelmed (especially looking at thier 2nd hand stock!) and thinking "well is that it?" So I was wondering are there any bass only shops/ guitar shops with big bass sections that you walk away form with a big grin on your face EVERY time you go in..... OR that you cannot leave without something shiny in your hand as you felt it was 'just what you needed"? Has the web killed off this experience ?
Someone earlier said that not just musicians get GAS and I must agree. My wife gets it for anything to do with lettering (pens, ink, pencils, parchment, marble, chisels - the list goes on and on). Of course she is also partial to the occasional pair of shoes and a handbag but normally restricts herself to no more than one of each per week. When we flew back to Libya this week we had accumulated 125Kg of hold baggage between us and this time I did not actually get any new instruments, something of a record for me. My only problem is that she keeps on wanting me to buy horrible guitars and basses "because it looks good" normally because it is made from some outlandish material or finished in some extreme colour or texture. She just does not appreciate a fine piece of wood unless she can chisel a line of verse into it! So far I have managed to deflect all persuasions to purchase lime green perspex stratocasters, but am seriously worried as she has started carving letters in marble and Welsh slate. What will be the nextr suggestion - Fender Custom Shop Telecaster Limestone Cowboy Ltd Edition Bass? Does she not realise I have a bad back?
Biggus, You will of course have seen Lemmies Ric 4001? That carved top behemoth, thats you that is!

Try to steer clear of vans as the insurance will be alot higher...... Estates are a good option, but do some research with an insurer as to what will be affordable before you lok at specifics. (old style) Rover 414 estates are pretty cheap too, but how much they cost to run is unknown to me.....

New Luthiers wanting feedback on their first bass!
The Burpster replied to warwickhunt's topic in Bass Guitars
Another quick thought..... You could ask them to knock out a couple of prototypes and take them along to one of our bashes (Manchester?)..... they will get a huge amount of market research done that way..... B. -
Alex, now we know a bit more....... Go and have a look.. it sounds a good price if its in good knick. Take pounds money with you and offer £50 then unless its a knacker, it will make a good back up......

Not played a GIO but the Ibanez guitars that I have done jobs on seem well built, of fairly nice wood. Like anything you get what you pay for..... DONT expect a PRS Custom 22 and you wont be dissapointed. Expect a budget Japanese made 6 sting that will play capably and be eminently 'modable' and you should have it bang on. Look OK to me for the money. I've just rebult my best mates 1st guitar a 1981 Ibanez Blazer...... I enjoyed the experience so much I have hunted down a Blazer bass form teh same year and re built it...... They are both (now as they were then) very good guitars! Bob.

Low winder do them for £25 a side, (presuming its a split P)..... I hear hsi work is good but not had had my mitts on his bits...... (ooooeeer missus) Checkout http://www.lowwinder.com/page13.html

Thats a bit like asking the value of a '99 Ford Ka...... It depends so much on condition...... I certainly wouldnt pay more than £450 for one when you can buy a new Highway One for the same! Then again, J's dont make my pants bulge like P's...... !

Beware ebay scammer "ladeprub"
The Burpster replied to pete.young's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
+1..... Thats a bit harsh to jump to such conclusions with only a week elapsed..... Admittedly when I have been away and selling stuff on ebay I've emailed folks to let them know..... but I believe I may be the exception to the rule their comms maybe be bad but afetr one week doesnt mean you have been duped. I presume you have contacted ebay conflict resolution before your posted this? -

C'mon folks some of you must've had experience with swapping split P pups for exotic ones? I'll now chuck in the Schaller PB6 and the Seymour Dunc, SPB-2 (humbucker, not 1/4pounder) into the foray for opinions..... I've got a serious GAS problem and want some numbers off you guys...... B. -
I'm sure for what they cost, they are capable...... But I ask of you, why? You've already got into 'upgrading for better effect' (ie the SDs in your Squire) I see this as a backward step.....(as soon as you get them, you'll want to spend X upgrading pups and bridges etc) Might I be bold enough to suggest, save your £200 and save the rest towards your first Fender Highway One.....

PM'd.......

B+gger...... Now I'm going to have to go and check mine.......! Damn you Chris!

I've got my project bass up and playing..... Started life 26 yrs ago as an Ibanez Blazer, I have not altered the wood ( it would be sacrilige to do so! ) but everything else has been updated ...... Except the pups, Now I'm at a crossroads and undecided. Its a std split P bass pup and I have the Ibanez adjustable pole pup in it still. Its OK but sounds a bit zingy if that makes sense? So I was wondering what experience you folkies have of the Bartolinis, Dimarzio, and Low winder replacement P pups? I've treid the SD 1/4pounder and it just sounds wrong for this beastie.... (that being said I might add the SPB-2 to this list !) Opinions please?

I'm not sure you've not missed the point slightly here.....? Sei, Shuker, Overwater, Ritter and others make bespoke, custom made basses..... Even if you wanted 2 exactly the same, they would probably struggle as the woods would be very slightly different.... I'm sorry, but you have to pay for that. Mass production keeps costs down, but with churning out numbers, quality inevitably suffers as a result. Come the day I decide to get myself a 5 string, I know exactly where its going to be from, I know exactly where its gong to be made, and I have no idea how much it will eventually cost. It will be in excess of $5k........ I have no problem with Sei putting up their prices by 20%, they feel justified doing so, and I genuinely hope their client base still appreciate thier craftsmanship enough to buy them. They dont float my boat, but I do appreciate fine intsruments when I see them and these are amongst the finest. If you want hand crafted, then it will take many hours work to produce and thats what you pay for. Soap box stood down now....!
