Sheesh, people ranting about eBay listings - so full of anger !
Matt, maybe its time to have a seperate ebay forum? I'm getting a little tired of policing the above type of thread. We all know there is charlatans on ebay, its great that we shoull identify them to protect the inexperienced and those with certifiable GAS, but the constant slagging off of folks errors, and niaivity is a little tiring..... I'll post my suggetsion below...... -

D'addario Flawounds dissapointment
The Burpster replied to markdavid's topic in Accessories and Misc
Mark, as I have 3 basses with Chromes on I would advise playing them for a while before you judge them. They loose that 'new string twang' after a coulple of weeks and settle down into a lovely warm ' upright double bass' thwump. Also they seem quite sharp edged when new and they need to be played a fair bit before they loose that.... but once they do they are superb. Occasionally you'll get a string that twangs a bit when new ( I have a D string that did it for about a week until it stretched) but they do usually settle down. The set on my Swampy PRS have been on since November (played most days) and sound marvelous now......... You dont mention what bass you put them on, and if you adjusted string height or intonation (bear in mind flatties need to be a little more taught to make the same note as round wounds..... if you knew that I apologise!) "Be patient young Jedi paduan....." -
Smurfff, My advice for whats its worth is "make your own mind up", I'm sure there are good shops out there, but I am yet to find one (and believe me I have trouble leaving anywhere without something shiny in my hand). As £500 is going to be a substantial investment for you, take your bass and lead to a couple of places, plug in and try them. The advice seems a bit "we havent got any of what you want, and I dont like your choice anyway" advice to me, and as for the c**P about 600w because your 2x150w guitar amps???? Does he really expect you not to question that? of course you dont need that amount of power. My Roland 30X cube kept up with a drummer and 100w valve guitar amp..... Its all about balance when you are playing together, and getting the sound right. A D-bass will certainly have enough OOOoooomph for what your doing, and as to the tone? that depends entirely on what bass, strings ,lead, effects, etc that you play........ I'm not saying that the D-bass will be exactly what you need..... you need to make up your own mind! But certainly dont write it off until you've played through one! Why on earth he is dissing some very good gear (Ashdown speakers are a bit sparkly for me but very good, Crate have some knockers but most say they are very good) ........ I honestly have no idea......... You make up your own mind as to his expertese, but based on what you've said here, I would just walk out the shop.......

Hi and welcome Joe, Yes indeed you'll be pleased to know we are all freindly in here.... Odd but freindly...... Enjoy .........
Alas, no reply on the strings thread. Here's a more appropriate place. Thank you, paul.
Paul, I've not been charged yet for strings. Normally buy 2 or threes sets at at time and they are sent in an envelope. Try to keep the value under abut $50 and they dont normally bother.... IME.

If the Roland D bass suits your sound I can recommend it... Good solid dependable combo. If I hadnt wanted a tube pre-amp I would DEFINATELY have one. (rather than the 210 you could try the 115 as a slighty cheaper but equally as capable option!)
-
Martin, As a start set point... Fret the stings at the highest fret (22nd on yours?) and set the pup height 2mm below the bottom of the strings.... if you have an 'aggressive' playing style or slap a lot.... you may need more........ but thats a good start point.
+1 One of my favourite Santanta albums is 'Welcome' , one of their early ones released in 1973...I think I first heard it when I was 12 and I've never forgotten it since and still listen to it regularly now. Beautiful guitar playing and a wonderful, wonderful tone!! Santana is one of Prince's early influences and you can really hear it on 'I'll Never Take The Place of Your Man' from the Sign o'The Times Album during the extended solo...
Wow, early stuff when a he played a Gibson SG and looked like a flower child--- "right on man!" "You're right about how subjective all this is and maybe the thing that is a 'constant' is the feel or soul of each musician..the notes they use, the rhythms they choose, etc, etc?" Oooooooh thats a bit deep.... I've thought about this abit since your first post, and I'm inclined to think now that, any tone that makes you feel good, or feels correct for a particular piece of music, is a good tone.....?

Fender Jazz (+Warwick now) DIY mods... how not to!
The Burpster replied to warwickhunt's topic in Bass Guitars
^^^ WH, methinks he is a dealer in anything BUT basses and doesnt know that much about them. The fortunate part is that he will ONLY sell to US bidders so some poor mug over there wil have to put it right! Just goes to illustrate how ebay has turned "wannabees" into traders.... Call me old fashioned but I really believe in honesty, if people dont know anything about a subject, they should ADMIT it, because the educated (in this case us here at the happy world of BC ) will soon put them right ....... And egg that is facially applied is not quite as nice as fried, poached, boiled etc... -
If you'd have just left it standard I'dve snapped your hand off to get it!!!!!!! I'm desperately after one and can I find a mint (ish) standard one for sale? Can I folk as like... !

Basses owned ( is one you want amongst these? )
The Burpster replied to Paul_C's topic in Bass Guitars
Heres a thought folks........ How about I make this thread a sticky and we can keep adding to it, we can then maybe use it as a referance. Anybody having bad GAS or a yearning for 'a particular' new axe for their perusal, could search the therad to see if someone has owned it and can ask them for thier valued opinion as to what that axe is like to live with...... Thoughts? -
Oh man, those string retainers have made my day. Can one of the mods make this thread a sticky titled "Don't drink and drill"
I may just have to do that ! What on earth was this person thinking? its a bit like the Fat, bald, tone deaf guy that gets up on karoke and is convinced he sounds like Marti Pellow..... (oooh hang that IS Marti Pellow ) ksmart6052 is obvioulsy convinced he has done worthwile mods to this poor beast whose cries I can hear from Lincoln..! please someone give him £250 so that we can give the poor creature a decent burial........... -
Looks remarkably like an Ibanez Blazer........ Close?

Whats the story with these Fender V1 basses?
The Burpster replied to phsycoandy's topic in Bass Guitars
I really wish you hadnt put that on here........ I've put in on my 'watching ' page an I'm now off to sell my pet sheep, the dog and all my back issues of Playboy! -
+1 from me.... Jazzes are pretty common also there are a lot of variatons of Jazz so work out exactly what it is you want before your GAS gets to baddly rooted! Oh and they (jazzes) will always be available..... having your ATK so well sorted that you feel 'at one' with it....has a worth which ( as the credit card add goes) is priceless.......
But just being devil's advocate a bit longer - whilst there's some really good points made here (thinking graphite and synth tones for example..), I'm still not 100% convinced that there really are loads and loads of really good different tones out there. More that there are lots of good variations on a small number of classic tones that work time and again...?
Nik..... 1stly....... Santana...... GOD! (oh and BTW--- he is PRS's finest officiando!) And 2ndly on your above point..... Unless I am mistaken, human hearing is quite limited, and at the edges of our hearing ability our sensitivity diminishes (as it does with age) ... so to be able to pick up slight variations of what we perceive to be tone can down to an individuals hearing (or lack of it) ...... eg. my guitarist has recently changed his hi fi... he bought some new speaker wires at the same time... having read that wires can sound different if used in different directions, we tried them both ways..... guess what ? listening to the same piece of music he was convimced the mids and highs were richer one way I was conviced the bass was richer the other but to each of us there was no noticable variation in what we could hear the other way (so only one way sounded better) ...! So; was there any diference at all OR is our hearing trained to pick up certain nuances within the music because of or differing disciplines???? I am fairly convinced that the frequency of note that we hear is constant on all music, and how we percieve it is different and maybe down to the individual level, so what you percieve to be twangy maybe my warm or vice versa..... Oh, this is going to be a can of worms I suspect...!

How much are portable air con units in Toronto though? He could be despearate! -
According to Dan Erlewine relief should be checked between 1 +17th frets and start point should be .012 to .015 at the 7th fret...... You can use a 6 string guitar top E string as a feeler.... get an old one from yer guitarist Some necks may need more depending on style and strings.... Adjustments should be small (1/8 turn for single action 1/16 turn for double action 'rods) and left for at least 24 hrs before deciding if its moved enough......

Very pretty sir..... Damn good price too.... was that new?
