1. Nik, My guess is that there is as many answers to this as there people on this forum..... We are all going to have our own 'ideals' based upon our own preferances in music, basses, strings, amps, and effects....... One mans 'amazing' is another mans 'crap' so it is completely subjective....... I have two almost identcial basses and they sound different, even with exactly the same strings on, so if that is taken into consideration each and every bass COULD have its own version of a sound! so again another degree of subjectivity....... Whilst I agree it is fine to say -- 'I love the way X sounded on that recording' -- there is no guarnatee that if you went out and bought exactly the same gear as was used in that recording another player could replicate that sound. Certain types of bass will broadly make certain tones.... but to be honest..... There isnt really any bass tones that I dislike.......... Some I prefer to others and I have basses that reflect that particular genre.....
2.
I've heard the Washburn models are good, although I've never tried them. Personally, I've found every acoustic bass guitar I've tried to be cr*p. If anyone does have any recommendations, I'd love to find a good one.
Funk ... try an Ovation Nikki sixx bass.... Its incredible...... (and expensive)...... I may get one one day the plain black one..... I had an Ovation Celebrity which I sold on (mainly becuse I didnt use it--- one of those GAS moments) the chap I sold it to has subsequently played it (in his band ) on a BBC programme and it sounded pretty good. Although it was plugged in and IMO needed to be to get teh best out of it...... FYI I sold mine for £250 which would have been just right for Rik.....
3. It will be difficult to say unitl i) someone gets their mits on one and plays it and ii) we find out how much it goes for or what the reserve is...... I've seen the OLP brand name before but dont know what their manufacturing is like. LOOKS pretty nice..... could be ace or a pile of poo.....
4. My stable is very modest by the standards and calibre of the above, but it seems to be popular so here it is.... Current. 1. Fender 40th ann P bass Quilted maple top. 2. PRS EB IV swamp ash, maple/maple neck 3. PRS EB IV Alder and Maple body , maple/rosewood neck 4. Better make that another PRS EB IV Alder body Flame maple 10 top w. Maple/Rosewood neck (just ordered from US!) 5. Hohner B2b 4 string. Moved out to be loved elsewhere 1, Yamaha RBX170 2. Ovation Clebrity CC074
5.
Think I might have to check with the mods that we have enough capacity on this site before I respond
Chris..... Would it suffice to say you have owned most of Fender at some point?
6. I've got all the gear I need..... Now what I really want is......... skill and timing!
7. Had the Yamaha, and played the Ibanez.... both are excellent value for the money. Can't vouch for the others, so wont comment.... I agree about our local shops.... pile of poo!
8. Chris, I believe Kiwi (the point of his reply) has been trying to obtain the correct sound for the piece of music that he has been asked to play........ That sound MAY have required a specific sound, or maybe the band required a specific sound or look, hence his post above....... I understand about "your own sound" and thats kinda what I'm after...... however I can understand the pressure to replicate a specific sound to appease, /please/ fit it with others in the band..... I should know I have a P bass because of that----- I'm not in love with it, but it does produce a sound that I cannot get from my PRSs and that is a sound my guitarist wants...... Him happy=Me happy!

Gosh!

Hummn theres a pretty good chance we'll have been there at the same time.... used to hang with a bunch of bikers that frequented it as well as The Flying Horse, the Trip, Tiffs (on a Monday 'rock night') and the one on Mansfield Road next to it the name of which escapes me ... The G'nor got converted into a flourescent bar in the 90s and attracted some of the more 'earthy' types that lived off Forest Fields.... My hair and taste in company changed in the mid 80s which probably kept me out of a lot of trouble..... Oh those heady days...
10.
It is a fantastic bass. I just wish someone could take 2 or 3 Ibs off it for me.
I'm fairly sure that if you remove the neck and strings that would account for the 3 lbs........
11. Not being a certified 'Fenderhead' I will bow to the far more experienced ramblings above....... I would have thought the best advice would still be...... if at all possible, to play 'em before you buy...... Unless you are absolutely sure about what it is you're buying????? £450 is a substantial investment and you want to be sure its what you want and need.... if its not EXACTLY right another will come along shortly.... sometimes you have to patient.......
12. Lovely Lovely Lovely bass...... One thing tho? why do they call it a P when it has a skinny J neck? Pah! Fender, a law unto themsleves!!!!!
13. BB..... Good point...... Is it good value? Not when you could get yourself this for £425..... (although its not Orange I grant you !) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=fender+highway

Gosh!

Good grief the G'vnor is a venue now? I spent many a happy hour there as a long haired miss-directed biker in my younger days!
15. In this day and age, the manufacturing methods are pretty similar, the materials will be similar and (now) the QC will be pretty closely scrutineered...... so apart from huge disparities in labour costs, (and no Custom shop in the other than the US), you will get a very good instrument (if its a genuine Fender) regardless of where it was made...... No if you want the orginal Mojo, or maybe some exotic non-sustainable selected woods or you are just need to have it MIA... then a US is the only option. If you want an excellent instrument but cannot afford to pay thru the nose, Genuine MIJ MIM will play just as well as a MIA. Or as Muppet states... Nail Head hit.......
16. I use a Thomann 'thebox' monitor for playing my drum machine thru. and also practice thru the Boss micro..... Mine is 2x5" and is very clear sound... Thomann do much bigger ones and they seem really good value.....
17.
Between J or P; for me it's a P. Maybe because the new hasn't worn off of it yet. My Jazz was my number one for years, but lately it's been the P. It's a 62 AVRI with flats on it and it gets the job done. I get more than one sound out of it with the tone knob.
What is it about a P with flats on that is soooo hard to reproduce with anything else???? I luuurve that sound........
18. Lush I'm 100% with Paul here..... if you sell that P you will regret it....... BTW "chunky neck?" they're wondeful! The other two are OK but IMHO would be better replaced by one P Highway One.... so you have a bestest and not quite so bestest but they both play similar and feel similar the Highway you can use and abuse and use etc....... If you didnt go for that option-- Then I'm 100% behind Paul- keep the P and put the money from the other 2 to the Rick that your obviously GASing for.
19. T'wud fit in well with John Mayalls Bluesbreakers..... I just wonder why?
20. Thanks S I was looking for ^^^^ that and couldnt remember where I'd read it!
21. WH...... You are right.... there is something definately fishy about this one..... 1stly shouldnt it have a certificate of authenticity, and 2ndly shouldnt the serial number be emebelished into the back of the neck? Me has a feelink that this is one of a run of 50th anni replicas they did in 2001....... Still a nice bass, but I'm not sure it is what its purported to be!
22. Mikey.... you rightly sound one happy bunny..... fancy doing a 'proper' review for the BC review thread? No Ibanez fretless in there! B.
23. SS, I cant tell you a comparison between an old one and the new crop.... but I can tell you that Stingrays are a fine instrument they play extremely well (I've played one but dont own one) and all the owners on here will pretty much swear by theirs!!!! Big Thumbs up from me! For what thats worth!
24. I realise this isnt the prettiest bass you'll ever see.... it would appear tho that you have a price brcket and you will be hard pushed to get a better made fretless for this amount...... 280126119242 on the 'bay of course...... Stagg? I'm afaid I have picked up a couple in shops and put them straight back down again..... They feel like they will fall apart in your hands........
25.
Keep the Fender. Swap out the cheap preamp in it and replace it with a Sadowsky or John East or Audere preamp and it will be a different beast. Hamster
Sound advice Hammy!! You could also check out the range of (slope of to a darkened room!) preamps and pupos from Seymour Duncan that are designed to fall stright into Fenders...... Yuuummmmyyyyyyyy........
