Is it not like "Trigger's Broom" then? All that's original is the body... And consider this; Manufacturer "X" gets his bridges, Tuners, Nuts, etc.etc. far cheaper than you can @ retail prices. They can make a whole bass for less than you can buy the bits! Unless you have a serious sentimental attachment to a given bit of timber, it probably isn't worth it. Whatever the results.
Alex, I can see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure I can agree with you there..... As always it depends upon what you start with and how much you spend...... No one on here denied my H1 P bass wasn't worth doing, and it lit Voxpop's fuse when he initially liberated it from me. Even something as simple and inexpensive as a Squier or Mex Fender can be made into a quality playing instrument IF the wood bits are really good to start with and some of them are that good!

Oooooeeeew big subject that one... Fors:- 1. you will have a bass everyone wil instantly recognise (not just other bass players) 2. if its reliced you wont have to worry about getting the odd dink 3. any sound tech will know how to approach it 4. you will blend in (visually) with any band 5. if the tone isnt up to what you want is mega easy pimping them Againsts:- 1. you may not like it as much as your Sadowskys 2. other bassplayers will just look at is as a reliced J.... (is that a bad thing..? I dont know...!) 3. some bands may look down their noses at you because you dont play a Fender 4. sound techs may raise thier eyebrows at you when you get a Sadowsky out the bag.... 5. tonally the std J bass may not be a flexible as your Sad. but see 5 above. As to advice to which one to get, my advice would be just dont jump at the first one you see, as there are loads around and some are f***in' amazin', some are very average, and it doesn't matter where they are made, what year they are, or how much they cost - that applies to all of them.
Am I the only one who thinks it looks utterly hideous?
Wayne, its clearly an '80's hairspray rock' thing..... I haven't seen one Gibson I'd consider buying until this one.... Dont get me wrong they are VERY capable basses but just never floated my boat..... But then I have a huge soft spot for Fender HM basses, so what do I know....
I am looking to maybe oflfoad my 78 jazz and get a more versitile bass.
Are you looking for more varied or versatile sound, or are you just bored.....? If you wanna have more adapatabilty but otherwis the 78 J is your thing, get a decent pre-amp, pups and bridge and keep the same J. Who's to say just because it cost £1k that it will make the sound your after? You will be gobsmacked how much pimping gear you could get for that grand......? Maybe even a rig update as well as bass pimping..... Just my contribution FWIW....
Thanks for the advice, that RBX 260 is quite tempting... Another question (if you don't mind!): Would it be worth getting the RBX260 or something similar and then upgrading in a few months time or going straight for the BB414 for a little more cash? Again, any input is appreciated!
Sensible reply alert.......! Bhav, at the price rance your looking at its a matter of image and style. All Yams can be set up play very well (my first bass was a budget Yam...... ) and after about 6 months I got the pimping bug. It was easy to set up, played well, sounded great (with new pups) and was dead easy to upgrade..... The differing Yam models have quite closely related neck diemensions, but the BB have 4 aside a tuners and the RBX series have 2 a side tuners..... If you can live with either then play a few until you find one you cant put down, and buy it..... If its gotta look like a fender then it can only be the BB...... Enjoy....

You know what.....? I say a big up to the fella that made that.... No its not to everyones taste, Yes it may look odd to some, But I think the chap (or chapess) that went to that much trouble to create it got exactly what they wanted.... I bet they love playing it too.... I just wish they'd put a bit more thought into wher ethey took teh pic.... Oh and why P-rick when there could have been SOooooooo many different anagrams of Rickenbacker and Fender Precision bass.... Come on folks, open season (but try to keep it fairly clean... ) I'll start...... Rickender, Ricks ion ass Frickinbacker Ferskinbender.....

Where abouts are YOU... ie which town, (So I have some idea how far away it is if I want to come and have a look...) just a hint - it would be really helpful if you fill in your profile, so we know a bit more about you.... String height / action - I've learned a valuable lesson!
The Burpster replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Hi all Fairly random post, and probably not news to 99.9% of you all, but... In the last couple of years I've taken to doing minor adjustments myself... truss, string height, etc. I've always set my action so it's the lowest it can be without the strings choking or rattling off the frets at the end of the board. As a result, the action on my basses has, over time, lowered to around 2mm (from string to top of fret) at the 12th and the heel end. Recently, I've become increasingly frustrated with my tone, especially at larger gigs. I just haven't sounded round enough, and when I've dug in, the notes have been 'barking'. It can't be the action, I thought. The strings are ringing cleanly... I even thought one of my 'ol sets of Le Bella flats had gone bad. I was about to retire them, when the penny dropped... Of course, when I've been adjusting my basses it's been at plink-plink room volume. At a gig, with more volume and adrenaline... you play harder. Hence the chokes! So, I've upped the action to about 3mm (it feels like a heck of a lot, but you really don't notice at a gig) and all the sudden my notes are ringing big and round, with plenty of growl in reserve when I dig in. Bliss. Why didn't I think of it before?? Don't be afraid to raise tha action a little more than you think, people... you might be suprised at how much difference it makes to your ears, but how little difference it makes to your hands! If this post helps one person, it'll have been worth typing.
Sooo so spot on.....! I too always strive for the lowest possible action but the realisation slapped me 'round the face..... Bigger strings need slightly more height to work properly..... having gone from 100s to 105s (to make proper use of the D-tuner) trying to get the same 'something' with a low action just didnt work..... raising the action just over .5mm made such a huge differance..... Might not work for everyone but gotta agree with you...... oh and its not just big venues (as I doubt I'll get the call for that), but playing through valves its so noticable....... -
Oh my fave subject... pimping... On a J I'd be hankering after a Hipshot bridge (BA are OK but they are not as well engineered as others, they are a pice of pi55 to fit tho') And pups I'd be going for a selection of SD or Bartolini...

Agreed - Maple , good.. Off to tech tho'

I've had a quick noodle on a 4, once you pick it up and cant see its "only its mother would love it looks" it played very nicley, quite hi-fi sound IIRC. Bit of change for you tho' isn't it Marc, cant see that going down well with the blues players, they'd probably spit beer all over the shop when you take it out the bag........?

I say there has been some teddy throwing on this thread hasnt there...... My experience..... I have progressed to a Peterson V-Sam for set ups as they would appear to be the most accurate that you can buy at sensible money...... It is FAR more accurate than several that I have had on teh way through to here. (Including top of the range Roland/Boss which my g-tarist now has!) I have a Korg DT-10 on my pedal board which is sufficient when playing because its quick and simple, and if the instrument (6string or bass) was set up properly when the strings were fitted will (I have found) stay close enough for the human ear until they need replacing, unless something drastic happens to it in the mean time... My contirbution FWIW

thumB rest STRING...... Must get me one of them..... What a twonk......
