  1. The Police - So Lonely. Later on in the song in one of the verses Sting plays on the wrong beat. Stands out like a seriously sore thumb. Bowie - Watch That Man (Aladdin Sane) It's endowed with some corking bass errors. It's like Trev was just have a first practice , got a bit lost and they kept it. I love it. Two that come to mind at the mo.
  2. Purple! That's what I was aiming for with the fretless I put together. Gold the gold sorted but have never got it painted. I really wanted a glittery/flake finish.
  3. Two. I'll usually play a straight up P bass and have the fretless along if we do one or two of the songs I use that in. If not, then it's just the back up and I can inflict the audience with fretless where it don't belong 😁 I am hamfisted and play with a pic mostly. When the adrenaline gets going then it can go dodgy in the string dept. The last string I broke was an E a couple of years ago.
  4. I've put some roundwounds on it and it's OK but not really there. I'm def going to try the DiMarzio when I find a used pair for sale and see what occurs.
  5. Algy used P basses when with The Damned. The T'bird was used in his band afterwards - Tank. Paul absolutely used Ricks for most of his career but did use T'birds with UFO. There is footage of him with a Jazz in the very early days of The Rods. And the Overwater did appear at some point.
  6. Ahh.. late to the party as ever!! The Rezillos first album is packed with joyous bubbly bass lines that are a joy to play. I do love My Baby Does Good Sculptures. Huge Damned fan and hearing the intro to Neat Neat Neat on Stuart Henry's Luxembourg 208 punk show one Sunday evening was like a switch flipping in my head. Music came alive and I wanted to play that intro. It was a seminal influence on me picking up bass playing. A squillion others that most have been mentioned already so won't reiterate. For some UK 1st gen hardcore, how about The Exploited - Don't Pay The Poll Tax. The bass in the intro is just nasty!!
  7. Thanks for all the help folks. I'll throw some rounds on it and see what occurs. I am quite liking the demo's of the Dimarzio but I'll check out the EMG and Toneriders. I totally appreciate that a P won't give me that bit extra in sound but any improvements can only be good. My ears are not that good any more so I can't discriminate many of the subtleties, which I suppose in a round about way is a benefit!
  8. Ok thanks. Maybe I'll try and pick up (pun intended) some 2nd hand ones for a try. I'll have a search for some sound clips first though.
  9. Wotcha! I want to change out the pups I have on my bitsa P bass fretless for something that gives me a bit more middle and maybe a little more of the mwah I'm missing. I have Quarterpounders in there at the mo and they're just not right, much too phat and not the right definition, either too toppy or too muddy. EQing hasn't helped. What's a fair low priced option to try? It only really get's a bit of use at home so I'm chucking a bunch of cash at it Thanks Mark
  10. Thanks for the replies folks. Apols for bing slow, work and a stolen laptop have got in the way of things a bit. I'll check those links n stuff 😃
  11. I have very vague memories of the guitarist in the first (very very poor) band I played in having some sort of very rudimentary drum machine in a pedal format (I think). I don't think it was programable and maybe had a few built in rhythms but I think you could change the speed. It had that very classic synth drum sound with the high hat like a fizzy tambourine maybe sounding a bit like the Roland CR-78. I seem to remember it being black and or green? It wouldn't have been expensive. Anyway, I'm just trying to confirm I do have a viable memory still and I'm not completely in fantasy world yet. Does anyone have any idea what it may have been?
  12. Ooh yes! I'll sign up for a pack I have a couple of difficult straps that need putting in their place!
  13. Hurrah for the love of 1mm picks! I just seem to have settled in to 1mm nylon picks over the years as they give me a little bit of flexibility that a solid (plastic?) one doesn't and works with my ham fisted technique. I've ended up using Wedgie 1mm nylon XT picks and they're perfect for me as they have a concave textured area where your thumb grips and they definitely stay put better than flat Dunlop style picks. https://www.stringsandbeyond.com/wedgie-nylon.html
  14. Bought a Sansamp Bass Driver Deluxe from Dave and he shipped it super quick and it was a fantastically quick and easy transaction. I now have to redesign my pedal board! Buy from this man! Thanks for your help Dave.
  15. I bought one of Alex's Gator 18 x 18 cases and it's excellent, fits my wonky homemade pedal board perfectly! Simple and easy transaction. Buy from this man!! Thanks very much
  16. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Squier-Bass-VI-6-String-Electric-Bass-ex-Paul-Gray/184325288419 Well, I've sort of said it all in the title! Paul Gray, superb ex bass player of Eddie and the Hot Rods, UFO, still in The Damned and played with a myriad of other luminaries is moving on his little used Squire Bass VI. I was seriously tempted but July is car and house insurance time. I have a fence to fix, a leaking chimney and just grabbed Dave Griffiths SansAmp Bass driver deluxe to replace my BDDI that is not well! So no spare funds for me 😖
  17. Hi. Just to check. The top one is an 18"x 18" and is still available? How much would delivery be? (It doesn't have to be that fast at the mo!).
  18. The first Ramones album was a perfect place for a young punk wanting to play bass to start. With the bass panned to one side of the recording and guitar to the other on my old record player, I could have one or the other faded out so I could either learn the part listening to Dee Dee and then progressing to playing along with Johnny's side up and Dee Dee off 😊
  19. Our singer does the list and he generally get's it right. He does always pass it by us though, just in case there's one or two which maybe are wrong 'uns for the gig. This works well for us.
  20. I'm using my fretless and a sansamp but not quite right. The bass sweeper might be fun, is that the Mooer? You didn't happen to sell your Bass balls on here did you? I'm sure I got mine (a big old Russian one) from on here a few years back. 😃
  21. Had to get me a Bassballs when I found out what made this glorious sound! As is, I still can't get it right, close but no cigar
  22. How about just slipping a pick under the other 3? You know, if you're a pick player, like you do anyway at home when finished noodling. I would expect it to deaden the strings enough for them not to ring too much sympathetically.
  23. I have reasonable success and get a fair amount of brightness back in by soaking them in a big bottle of meths for 24 hours. Obviously not as good as new but I've rarely had any problems.
