1. Oh blimey!! That is lovely! I bet the bids will run soon, pity the dollar rate is utterly dreadful right now or it would be an even better deal. I presume the colour is as per manufacture being a CIJ bass, it's not a re-fin is it?
2. Hey Clarky, yup I'm happy with the action and it's an easy enough neck to get on with too. I'm wondering if I need to stick a shim under it as the E string saddle is right down as low it'll go and the G is pretty low too. I'm thinking that a luthier is going to charge more than it's worth TBH which is why I fancied giving it a shot but I'm a bit cowardly too. I'm happy to learn stuff but need to be shown really, that seems to be the way I learn things best.
3. Yes, it is ALL of the neck I am thinking of. I'm sort of getting the impression that after sanding down, which worries me a little, then just spray away (frets included) and then clean them down afterwards. I'm lurching between "ahh just get on an try it" and "uh oh, here's a hug rod for my back". Thinking further, what does it actually matter if the frets get varnished too and I leave it? Would it drastically affect the sound and maybe feel? I guess after a playing for a while, the action of fretting a string would wear the varnish off the frets. Just thinking aloud (and hoping to be lazy...).
4.
Nice bit of lateral thinking but I think it would be easier to simply remove the frets, spray it and put new ones back in.... but that's me.
Removing frets!?!? Oh my oh my! I am starting to think that maybe I like the pale maple silky look! Never removed, nor replaced a fret in my life.
5.
So the L in MarkyL doesn't stand for Luthier then?
Alas no.. Far from it.
6. Yeah, this is replacing a funsome "lively" neck and I don't want to end up cooking and twisting from too much hot sun.. but I do like the concept. I was actually thinking of doing the fretboard too (*runs and hides) and was wondering about coating the frets with wax instead of little strips of masking tape prior to varnishing. I do have a very clear and disturbing image in my mind of me blubbing, holding a buggered neck and mumbling "Why the f**k did I even think about doing this..."
7. Thanks for the replies. I'll see about ordering a can for the link Ou7shined.. and I have a very faint (very I might add) twinge of guilt! Indeed Mr. F. I had thought about that.. but I want to use it!
8. I picked up an aftermarket maple P neck from Clarky and it's just what I was after.. except it just looks a bit too new! It has a light toned maple look to it and I guess has a silk varnish coating as standard. I really want a darker amber/honey look to it and probably glossy too. Now I am a DIY fool so it needs to be easy.. i.e. spray can. Do I just lay some masking tape over the frets? What varnish should I use? Any advice greatfully received Mark
9. Bought Clarky's spare maple P neck from him and as ever it was a super easy transaction and very quick delivery. Cheers mate! Mark
10. Sid = rosewood. End of!! You can then sell me the maple neck... seriously!!
11. What an absolute steal! That is such a good bargain price for a cracking bass and with a gig bag on top of the hardcase too. One T'bird is enough for me and I gigged mine this weekend and loved it (I've been very P bass centric recently). Big sound and it looks sooooo RAAAAWK!!! Someone buy it, an awesome deal!!
12. Did you get it? I was considering it but the details offered were just a bit thin on the ground and I wonder how much else had been changed that he was unaware of. Still £979 (IIRC) could be a very sweet bargain. 70's s'plates seem to be around £100 or a bit less so not much to get it back to original if that was all it needs.
13. That's a steal!! Having a Shuker JJB I can confirm his instruments are beautifuly made and a delight to play.
14. Sold my Ashdown Mini 48 to John and the transaction has been straight forward from start to finish. Easy and friendly comms, very prompt payment and happy to arrange his own courier. I can totaly recommend John and it has been an absolute pleasure doing business with him. Mark
15. Oh! This sounds good to me, just need to keep the diary free and the Mrs happy doing something else!! If it's a def for me, I'll bring my Shuker JJB and maybe my wobbly neck P, see if anyone fancies tweaking the neck Probs about to sell my two Ashdown mini cabs so I couls haul 'em along too if anyone might be interested.
16. 3 strings? Wow!! Why so many? I'm lucky if I even get to use two!!
17. Let me add that the JJB really is a fantastic bass to play. It's just so well balanced and useable. I too prefer a slimer neck and normally err towards the usual B nut width so I was a little concerned about the width on the Shuker, but when sat in the hand, it really does work. As I recall, Jon Shuker would tweak the neck slightly if you prefered a thinner width. I can heartily recommended the JJB if you want a P that's going to do what a P should, but properly. Happy days
18. How about Big Bottom by Spinal Tap, that has three bassist, plus Derek Smalls on a twin neck. At a gig a year and a bit ago in Cardiff The Damned ended up with three active bass players on stage, Stu (current), Paul Gray and Bryn Merrick. You could say that four of their bass players were on stage though as Captain was their original bassist, but he just stuck to his guitar duties for this. The band I was in back in the earlyish 80's had two bass players. We swapped roles in songs with backing or lead vox and extra percusion, but we certainly played a few songs together. I love seeing two drummers play, that synchro thing just looks so good.
19. Had a great gig last night. Depping (which may become a permenant place) for a local covers band, who get way more gigs than my current band and that's a big temptation. Anyway, had two rehersals with them and then in at the deep end. The singer can go off at all sorts of tangents so it's a bit of a challenge, but damn good fun. It went really well but I did drop the ball a couple of times, getting lost in a song but I managed to work around it. Had to keep my eye on the the other guys in the band a fair chunk of the time as I didn't feel confident enough to go a bit wild, so I was a bit static..well for while The band were happy with my performance and I had some good backslaps from the audience lurkers at the end. All in all, I'm really pleased. Oh and I used my Shuker JJB (ex-Clarky) for the first time live and was very happy with it. I found it extremely playable, especially with chrome flats. Having been a roundwound guy for all my years, this is quite a change but they just feel so quick under the fingers.
20. This is the BTA and not the Big Block 427 yeah? These have the pre-amp stage from the ABMs I think. Where did you try it out? I would love to give one a go and have had thoughts around the 300 or maybe even the 200. I doubt either would ever get wired up to a 8x10 though, let alone two of 'em!
21. Yes, I am one of those. It's a shameful business and I'm not proud of what I do!! Actually I'm not at frothing geek level, but I always scope out what gear is being used, raise an eyebrow slightly and nod in a sage like way. It makes me feel like I'm a little bit more special than the rest of the hoi paloi there.
22. And hello from a bit further down the road in Bournemouth
23. Oh blimey!! Now this looks like it could be.. uhm.. fun!! http://www.lemmymovie.com/ If you scroll down there's a link to the trailer. Check out the dB meter in the clip too!! "..he squashed my frog!"
24. Not too keen on all the chrome that is starting to creep in. Looks a bit cheap to me. Tiniest little ding will stick out like Mark King's sore thumb.
