+1 on swapping the PUPs around. It highlighted where a problem lay for me. Replaced the offending set with some QPs picked up on here at a chuffing good price and we're all happy again

A liitle bit of this and a little bit of that! I usually fretboard stare more at the start as I get my cojones in order. Fannying around on stage is part of the fun of it for me but I do need to keep refering back to my fret hand just to make sure I'm in the right place. 100% it's a confidence thing.. confidence that I am play the right thing and confidence to look at the freaks in the audience. I did see a band recently where the bass player was stood right at the front for a large portion of the gig with a demented semi-baked stare... I was a bit disconcerting, even if it gave that "danger" element that good rock n roll needs to give it an edge. Totaly agree that you have to give a performance, from good songs, played reasonably well through looking good to showing you are having a good time. I drop some howlers in songs quite often but just laugh them off. I've had a number of the "man, you're a great bass player" comments, which to be honest I'm not. Decidely average with limited abilities, but I make it look like I know what I'm doing. I do have a bad habit of staring at the bloody set list though.. that seems to be my safety blanket of late. Apart from our singer who arses about a fair bit, I just wish I could get the others to mellow and let loose somewhat. Our lead guitard monkeys around in rehearsals but the nerves get him at a gig and he can be a bit fixed to the spot. Pity.
PS here's the ones I've owned '78 with retro ebony board. MONSTER
Oooh!! I've done something naughty in my undercrackers!!! I LOVE that to death! Awesome looking bass and that is EXACTLY what I want when I go for a proper fretless.

Pick thy bass and walk. Isn't that what it says??

David J from Bauhaus has been a fretless P player for a very long time. He does get quite a funsome range of tones and fruity sounds from it. Some great distorted/fuzz stuff too.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET! Just sweet. That Ramones clip is from the Musikladen show, recorded live and it's a fantastic blast through some of their best songs. DeeDee sure picks close up to the neck.. the complete opposite of JJ. I wonder how many new bass players were spawned due to JJ's playing style and tone. I reckon he must have a fair old number of "bass children"!!
this has given me an idea. bassist seem to be the most consistently reliable, able, enthusiastic and of course, talented of ALL the musicians. why bother searching for drummers that have no sense of time (clock AND rhythm), singers that can't sing yet think they're gods gift to us, and guitarists that don't understand that when a song finishes you STOP playing, and don't start again until the START. why not form a band where every instrument is played by a BASSIST. the most punctual, considerate, musically sensitive, dynamically aware band in excistence!
Ah, nothing would ever get done, as it would be a never ending loop of each one complementing the others on how good they are in a very considerate manner!

Anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of genuine Gibson/Epiphone parts? I want a black scratchplate for my Gibson T'bird and I really like the ones on the new Epi. I did try an aftermarket one, but it was crap. Also I do rather like the T'bird logo on the plate. Ta
Fnaar, fnaar etc... Koch Amps website here - http://www.koch-amps.com/
So much for the made in heaven match of a Gibson LP and a Marshall.. I says the new perfect match is with a previously mentioned guitar range.... Koch amps and Cuntz guitars..

Encores (the last few numbers in your set, not the brand)
Marky L replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
The problem I have found a few times is you have given you're all for the set(s) and done a good gig and then when you decide yes we'll do a couple more, it can go a bit pear shaped and you end up leaving the punters with a bad impression of a knackered band limping through a couple of songs that they didn't really want to do. Needs a careful balance. Pity to leave your best for an encore that you may not get to do. -
I have exactly the same as this. I have not tracked it down as a specific model version (the Contemporary option sounds worth a follow up). I certainly do not believe it is a mongrel. The neck is wide, I forget what I measured it at but it's def a C. I find it a very playable bass and it has a great sound and look. £450 is a bit steep IMHO but I certainly worth investigating further. I replaced the bridge on mine as the original was very corroded and I put black control knobs on too and I think it looks sweet. Oh and I haven't taken the PUPs out, but they do have very large pole pieces, almost like SD Quarter Pounders. Looking at your pic, I'd say they are what was fitted originally. Don't have any good pics to post, but you can see from this one when I was gigging it that it's the same.

Hmmm.. well. When I was in a band in the earlyish 80's and had a little more youthfull exuberance things could go a bit askew! We had two bass players (myself and another) and a variety of other band members and we'd do various stuff for different songs. One of our last numbers was Hot Love by T-Rex. I was meant to do backing vox during this. Fine, except I had certainly reached my drink limit and staggering around the stage in a shambolic state the song came to the long run out.. "La la lah la la la laaaaah". Deciding to enhance this part, I began howling down the mic, whilst doing crotch wrenching high kicks, "Why don't you f**k off you c**ts". I managed to get the rest of the band to join in the kicks and the new improved vocals. Afterwards the pub manager said we'd need to tone it down a bit if we wanted to play there again! I also recall one gig where I was singing lead and decided I couldn't drink any more and threw the contents of my pint glass up in the air behind me hoping to get it on the drummer. Unfortunately my aim was well off and nearly all of it went over my bass that was propped up in the corner. It worked fine afterwards, but the beer soaked neck was not a joy to play.

Ohh!! Nightmare!! Right now.. The New York Dolls.. then and now actually. But I guess with the then option my chances of kicking the bucket would be pretty high!

And bang that treble knob way round to the right

Usually wear a varied selection of black, though I'm getting in to flowery shirts now!! If I don't have my chucks on (Converse) then my silver pointers come out -
Ah welcome back old thread friend. Whilst you were away I was reminded that matching outfits and baseball hats cannot always save you:
OMG!!! That is the best vid I have seen for so long!! I'd book them for the comedy value!! I've listened to it 3 times so far!!

We rehearse way too loud too.. it just creeps up and up all the time. Saying that, we don't have a powerful drummer so he gets lost in the sound a bit so that helps us pull back a bit, imagine knitting instead of drumming and you're there!

It's a fascinating list to look through. Not only to see some amazing guitars, basses and clothes, but also to see the pricing on some of the stuff sold. There are some wonderful basses and guitars in there and some of the vintage stuff went for what I would say is pretty low pricing. When you look at the sale price on some of the old P basses and also some of the lovely old Gibson guitars it really does make you realise how stupidly over priced some of the stuff on Ebay is. I think it would be good to forward details of specific units off the list to some of the fools asking ludicrous prices for some tatty old pieces of sh*te and point out that an Entwistle owned one went for sensible pricing and they should bloody wise up! (OK I doubt he ever touched the damn thing other than getting it out of the case for a pic or two, but whatever).

Anyone on here get this? I went higher than I wanted to go, and to be honest I have enough to be going on with for now!
If it stays at that price it'll be a good price. The singer from my band has got Dee Dee Ramone's 1974 Precision bass in his house doing nothing. There's actual footage kicking about of Dee Dee throwing it in the crowd at a gig in London and my mate grabbing it. Never played it though, I might ask him to bring it to the next rehearsal and give it a bash.
Don't suppose he's short of a few quids at the mo is he..???

Clarky is on the dot there, it's the patented Optigrab. Perfect for ripping your pinky out of its joint if you have some nasty onstage rock n roll incident!

P bass PUPs. Are they in the correct configuration?
Marky L replied to Marky L's topic in Bass Guitars
Cheers. I'd like to try one of the Yamahas at some point one day. Maybe saying Leo was "wrong" wasn't quite the right word -
Just musing to meself as I fitted the QPs to my P bass, are the PUPs on a Precision actually in the correct position? OK, it probably would make little difference but the way I see it, the PUP under the E & A strings is towards the neck i.e. the warmer end and E & A are fatter sounding strings. The D & B PUP is of course closer to the bridge giving a more brighter edge on the two already toppier strings. So... should the PUPs actually have originally been placed the other way round.. E & A nearer the bridge and D & P PUP up the neck end? Would this balance the tonal output just a little bit more? M

Definitely in for a punt on this one. I know I can trust his judgement. Alas, I know the price will runaway at the end of the auction. As is, I don't think he ever used a P with The Damned (he doesn't say so here actually), so I think this is a probably a purchase in the last 20 years. Top class guy who's electric musical career has been drawn to a shuddering halt due to very bad tinnitus.

Bought a set of immaculate SD Quarter Pounders from Raggy. Top guy to deal with and the PUPs arrived next day special delivery. Cheers mate
