1. thats a beautiful coffee table alright....
2.
Well, to save you having to route out the bass to make other manufacturer's pickups fit - I'd say get the active EMG soapbars that will drop straight in and add a really nice preamp - either the EMG stock preamps or something like an Aguilar OBP-3 or a John East preamp. Jon Shuker also has a preamp that he puts in his basses that is really rather good too! The EMG active pickups come in a range of configurations all in the same casings. a P style, a J style , a dual rail style (which sounds like a MM pup) and a switchable J / Dual Rail style for two different sounds in one package. At the moment, both my basses have the dual rail type, known as the EMG 45DC. The '45' bit denotes the casing length in inches. You'd have to measure the length of your pickups to ensure you chose the right size replacements. Incidently, it's the active DC's that go in the more expensive Spectors ;o) .
+1 for the EMG DC's i'd recommend the EMG 2 or 3 band preamp. i had it fitted with a pair of DCs and it sounds fantastic. Easts pre is very good too, but shuker cant fit his pre to other makers basses.
3. no. in a word... there are alot of players out there that go a long way beyond Flea
4. Another bump. revised price of £300 for the pair. any takers out there?!
5.
Yup. It may be a different thing if a few bands are splitting money or whatever but for a 2.5 hr gig you should have agreed up front. We dont play anywhere that either pays in ticket money or bar percentage. Its too much faffing about just to be shafted at the end of the night.
my band agrees a flat fee, usually around £150 - £200 when we're booked. then we split it between the 3 of us.
6.
The owner wasn't there last night and it was our guitarist who had words with the Bar Staff, He was quite gutted as we didn't expect mega bucks anyway but enough to cover expences etc & a bottle or 2 thrown in as they had done on his other gig's. This venue has contacted him on a number of occassions for last min - Bookings! Well from now on its on our terms, If they contact him again then we will request an agreed fee? If they don't like it then we won't do it! The venue was a cracking Sunday Night number just to top up the pocket money but £10 Cheers Guys!
ive always found its best to agree a fee beforehand. £30 between you is disgusting for a 2 1/2 hour gig
7. weekend bump.
8. id go for...... Basses: My current main bass, Tung Wingbass 6 string, Shuker matching 6 and 7 strings and a Musicman Bongo 6 in egyptian smoke Rack: Mesa Boogie Titan V12, rackmount strobe tuner, eventide ultra-harmoniser and a compressor of some description Cabs: 2 Mesa powerhouse 1200 (1x15 in the middle, 4x10 drivers at the outer corners) it would be reaaally good to have enough for that lot......
9. Indie 6 string. tuned BEADGC. strung with warwick black label strings. medium gauge 130 - 20 on the B string 3rd - 1.5 12th - 2 17th - 3 Medium low IMO My B and E are set a little higher than the top 4 to stop the notes choking but they could go lower. i play with a light touch so fret buzz isnt usually a problem.
10.
So I guess it looked like a total my penis is like a freight train cuz I play the Real (Men's) Bass. I've found there's not much like buying an upright for taking your expectations to a reasonable level. You buy the not-completely-sh*te upright for about £3000, then you buy a £100 string set so you can have a passable arco sound, the £500 bow, and of course the fingerboard needs to be dressed and the bass given a decent lookover for another £200. Add a pickup for £100 and at £3900 you have a bass that has probably somewhat terrigible action, won't sound good for 3 to 5 years even if you really apply yourself to opening up the bass with daily arco playing and the bastard just won't stay in tune at gigs with any kind of ventilation systems and wtf is up with that intonation changing on you every time you pack it up and take it to another building? The strings love to hang on the nut, the bridge threatens to collapse every time to stufff in it a car (sic), the finish can't take any sort of bumps without damaging and the fat f***er feedbacks like there's no tomorrow. Soundmen don't know what to do with it, the pianist wants you to sound like Ray Brown and Gary Peacock while he tromps all over your slice of the sonic spectrum and every funking w***er needs to come over and comment on how your intonation was off in that song (remember that ventilation system? it pumps cold air (or hot air if it's winter) all over your bass, making the untalkative but spankable damsel's tuning go up or down like a 5-year old on a slide) that the vocalist has decided sounds better in Db. Your instrument projects like a wet box of cardboard while the smug flautist pulls that silver pipe of his from his coat pocket and drowns you out. The drummer complains that your attack isn't that hot today and the guitarist keeps on urging you to fill more space while he solos for the 13th chorus of Mr P.C. when your luthier has pulled a prank on you and the bass is suddenly set up for orchestra arco playing. So if a £1k electric isn't a total genocidal war every time you pick it up, I'd say you're getting your money's worth.
My teacher spent some time waxing lyrical about the benefits of upright playing last term......thats well and truly shot down now
11. bump!
12.
haha, it does look that way doesn't it. i am influenced by his playing yes, along with all of these melodic and chordal players... gwizdala, feraud etc. but i chose the walnut cos it sounds good and the massur birch cos it looks good. i wanted a ramp cos i had one in the last bass. i guess its coincidence it looks pretty similar! still...he's not got a bad bass to look similar to. Peace, Rob
very true, he does have a lovely instrument! yeah it was the combination of woods, scale, drop tuner and ramp that got me wondering gorgeous piece of kit, congrats!
13. lovely bass indeed! you influenced by matt garrisson by any chance?
14. it really is nice! its corrected two of the things i normally dislike about P basses, the shape and the lack of a 2 octave neck. very nice job, specially considering the time youve done it in! i second (sorry third!) the call for more pictures!
15. thats one of the nicest P-basses ive ever seen! lovely piece of work well done
16. nice one
17. Theres a few i quite like Michael Manring - the enormous room Trip Wamsley - Huevos con Dios John patitucci - The Heart of the Bass, Theme and Variations for 6 string bass and strings Jean Baudin - Transcend .......and for a giggle - John Myungs bass solo in Metropolis pt. 1
18.
Here's mine :-)
a very nice one you have too
19. i think it would have been more courteous for the band to ask if you have a problem with getting a dep. in...but IMO its better for the band if they get a dep and get the gig done.
20. the Spector LX 435 is designed to use that tuning, constructed with 35" scale length rather than 34" to cope with drop tuning. maybe look into that? http://www.spectorbass.com/bass_euro_Euro4LX_1.html
21. if you're only going down to D, perhaps a D-tuner might be an idea? if you have your heart set on headless then status may be your best bet, unless you're willing to wait and go custom..... perhaps ask them if its possible to fit a kahler trem. unit? (or maybe go for a bendwell?...)
22.
Are you taking offers?
yup im taking offers. PM me and let me know what you're interested in!
23.
Love that RBXJM2, I still want one !
i was really lucky in that i picked it up fairly cheap. i wanted to own one when i first switched to 6er so since i had money going spare i went for it. lovely bass. sounds a little thinner than my main bass but its very articulate and seriously punchy. very much like a stingray in that respect but it has its own sound thanks to the different preamp. nice fast neck and tight string spacing make it comfy to play im sure there was one for sale on here....might want to see if its still availlable?
24. cheers its taken me a while to get a set up that im happy with, but for the moment, this is it!
25. This is my current set of 3 basses! My main bass is an Indie IB606, modified with filed frets, EMG DC pickups and 3 band parametric preamp and finally a ramp. Shes a bolt on, the body is Ash/Wenge/Ash, the neck is maple/ebony/maple/ebony/maple and the fretboard is rosewood. the neck profile is flatter than alot of 6ers ive seen, but she plays beautifully I bought my Yamaha RBX JM2 late last year when i saw it in a clearance sale as an ex. demo model (having wanted to own one for a long time). shes got a few scars from the shop floor but she plays wonderfully. currently the sole unmodified bass ive owned! very stingray-ish character to the sound, ideal for funk, rock and prog. My last bass is a Spector performer 4 (2003 model). my first 'nice' bass, she got me through my A-level exams and through my grade 8 performance certificate. the only passive bass i own, i use her for jazz work at uni (usually theres a duster under the strings between the bridge pickup and the bridge). My 6ers are strung B - C with Warwick Black Label strings, the 4 is strung E - G with D'Addario chrome flatwounds
