1. Go for it. You can nail a lot of the pizz stuff yourself. Arco is a much tougher nut to crack without help and it will help you nail the scourge of double bass playing; intonation.
2. PS I have a gig with John Etheridge in June....
3. Remember the mantra.... 'No-one notices the bass player unless he catches fire....'
4. Hey, Kevin. Was listening to Karma yesterday. You rock.... And are probably the only bloke I knwo who could actually PLAY that transcription (I can't)
5. They encourage endless repetition which is one of the big turn-offs for me as a listener. They irritate me as they are often just 'filler' and don't really offer much in the way of added value..
6. April by Brand X (John Giblin)(anything by Brand X is loaded with great fretless playing but a lot of it is very stylised and impossible to recreate) Chris De Burgh's album 'The Getaway' has a load of great fretless lines (John Giblin again) Barbara Thompson's 1980 live recording with Dill Katz on bass Alphonso Johnson on 'This Must Be Love' of Phil Cillins' 'Face Value' Mark Egan's work on the Pat Metheny Group's first two LPS 'PMG' and 'American Garage' - in fact, anything with Mark Egan on will be worth a look. Jaco Pastorius on Metheny's 'Bright Size Life' Mick Karn with Japan (not to my taste but very influential) Gary Willis on the first two Tribal Tech LPs 'Spears' and 'Dr. Hee'
7. Nice one, Bill. Tie it up and release a solo cd.
8. Sorry.... http://c3.cduniverse.ws/MuzeAudioArt/580/586629.jpg
9. Here is mine.... The opening 55 seconds were conceptualised to sound like the random 'footsteps' of a moving insect and then the patterns that were created were then used as a melody. The bass parts came next and the others parts built using straight harmonies (e.g. thirds) linked to the melody or bass part. The piccolo part was a conscious counterpoint written specifically to offer variation and what I think of as the 'love theme' All written on Sibelius, transferred to Cubase as a midi file and populated with Miroslav Philharmonik vsts. I am still figuring out how to use the technology and the strings are a little too hot for my tastes but some of the sounds are marvellous (I love the pizzicato strings at the beginning) https://soundcloud.com/robert-palmer-1/creep
10. Didn't recognise the name but had seen Rose Tattoo live. Great night. RIP, friend.
11.
Crikey Bilbo, you're quick!! A really lovely piece. I like how it builds gently; you've created a good sense of momentum that kept me focussed throughout. Sounds great too. Nicely mixed with everything sounding well placed and panned.
Thanks for the feedback, mate. Still learning to use the technology but am making progress slowly.
12. Thanks, BT. Not sure why that happened.
13. Nothing cumbersome about conventional notation. I use it all the time. I have pop chord charts I use regularly that have a two bar sketch as an aide memoir to remind me of the groove. I also work with charts that are pages long. Every composition I write is fully notated and it is by far the most efficient system or recording ideas you may want to return to later. Trouble is, most of Spoombung's stuff won't translate into staff notation.
14.

If I can just get on the damn thing, this is gonna be one helluva game of Quidditch
15. I did a trio gig with no hand trouble at all. I think it is about the holistic approach. L/h, r/h, amp etc. And, mostly, not playing too hard. Let he bass do it's job and don't choke it.
16. Here is my April entry.... am thinking creepy crawlie sounds morphing into a 'love theme'. Still learning how to control Miroslav Philharmonik and loving the results Strings are a bit hot but I cn't seem to get what I hear in the mix to export as an 'accurate' audio file. It's close enough for you to get the idea. https://soundcloud.c...palmer-1/creep
17. I have 4. Pet Sounds, Blue, Nightfly and Face Value. I have heard 16 more. I am culturally deprived. Must check out Cee Lo Green......(not)
18. I have no stage presence whatsoever and stand at the back with a face like a slapped arse. Not because I am pissed off but because I actually DO have a face like a slapped arse.
19.
Actually Rob, twas not a 'Pity' vote. I see you had done some homework on the picture....
Nice that someone noticed. I am glad I voted for you now! I tried drums but didn't like what they did to the piece and I didn't want to develop the piece as it was supposed to be simple and cheesy. Poor choices, maybe, but choices nevertheless!
20. I'll take that vote, even if it's a 'pity vote' Already written April . Now arranging it
21. Learn to press the strings with lighter technique. You will probably find you working harder than you need to and slowing yourself down as a result.
22. So Skol, the Pete Sampras of composition wins again.... Come on, my son. Where's this month's picture?
23. And when you have listened to all that, try some Jazz
24.
Moondance Well someone was going to say it
He aid Jazz, lojo, not DRIVEL.....
