3. I have been meaning to do this for years. I thought it would be fun to start a thread of photos of bass related crap we have collected over the years - you know the stuff; bass shaped clocks, wall plaques etc. Here's my contribution to get us started. REMEMBER: NO SHAME!
4.
When you say 'journeyman playing', I presume you're not including his astonishing fretless work with Paul Young, Gary Numan, etc etc etc. I know it's all a fair few years back but you can bet your boots he can still play the stuff and, my god, I wish my playing was as 'journeyman' as that..!
It was lovely, but 'astonishing'? Isn't that a little hyperbolic
5.
I'm sure he doesn't lose sleep over your opinion of his ability...
Why would he? Anymore than I would lose sleep over his opinion of mine. Doesn't negate it, tho
6.
Bilbo and I are actually in a fairly unique position in that I think we're the only people who've submitted something each month
I think I missed the drunk santa one, mate.
7. Nope. Still too much time going over the same territory. Nothing fresh to get inspired by. Could use the time better.
8. I am not being critical of PP but I do wonder what he would sound like if someone put a third chord in there? (Meeeeoooow!) Seriously, tho', I have no problem with Pino (he's a Cardiff boy and I did most of my early playing around there) but I think he is possibly the most overrated player in the canon. He is good at what he does but most of it is journeyman playing. If half of us had Steve Jordan (and, indeed, Mayer) to bounce off and played that often as a trio, we would probably sound that good.
9. If I was going to write a 12 minute piece of music that went through 12 different 'sections' building to an integrated whole, it wouldn't be this. I couldn't even be arsed to segue one minute sections of the twelve pieces I have already written into one continuous whole. Sorry, guys. It's not going to happen. Count me out.
10. 'tis to the Dot.
11. Sounds like mid-era Sabbath \m/
12. I have just finished a six week season playing with John Etheridge, Jim Mullen, Nigel Price, Julian Siegel, Vasilis Xenopoulos, Gareth Lockrane and Martin Speake. Later this year, I get to play with Gilad Atzmon, Tony Kofi, Steve Fishwick, Tim Whitehead, Kate Williams, Pete Whitaker, Christine Tobin, Phil Robson and others 'to be announced'. What a year!!!!
13. My turn today, Clarky. Hope it was a good one!
14. Every electric sound on my soundcloud page is my Wal. I have no idea if that is a 'Wal' sound; they all sound remarkably like me so could be nothing more than a Bilbo sound. None of them sound like Geddy Lee. I'm not helping, am I?
15. To be cool, it has to be on vinyl. Nothing on cd is cool, nothing digital is cool. My coolest record? Probably Diamond Head's White album.
16. I also loved this guy's sound: Carrado Rustici http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbS28fTWXHQ
17. Love Vai but I always found Gary Moore an intensely emotional player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-G-PtmcPyK0 Also love Peter Green's 'Fool No More' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXXI87DHL-s
18. Learning by copying has some merit buy, in my experience, learning complex 'party pieces' without understanding them is pretty pointless. Most bass players can nail some of this stuff; Teen Town, Donna Lee etc but, without the knowledge behind it, nothing happens. Learn to read music and open everything up.
19. That's 'cos Jazz is the best
20. Music to video?
21. 31 days in July; should be 24th?
22. Do these massive arena shows ever sound any good? I have never found them that presetable.
23. I played some stonking jazz with an old friend, guitarist Nigel Price and tenor saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos. Am feeling it this morning but, wow, what a night's music.
24.
I seem to have been bitten by the composition bug. I can't wait until August, so I've done another one anyway...
If we go down that route, there will be chaos.....
