1. Would that it were that simple, Pops. I am thinking of it series of solo double bass recordings so I don't have to worry about anyone else!!
2. It's frustrating, innit? I am better now than I ever have been but the better I get more frustrated I get at the music I get to play. When you listen to the greats all day and then get to gig what is mostly a load of old b******s, you have to ask yourself, why bother? I am sure it is OK for people who live in the big metropolitan areas but out is the sticks, you just can't find the player who are a, able to play this sh*t and b, who WANT to play this sh*t Good enough doesn't seem good enough at the moment!
3. I always practice reading Jazz solos or Bach Cello Suites which are invariably difficult to read through flawlessly. The up-side of that is that actual bass parts are quite easy!!
4. I did a great pencil drawing of Steve Howe years ago (like 30). Don't know what happened to it.
5. Messing with the sound whilst playing a gig is never going to end well. 35 years gigging and it still happens. Happened to me last Sunday, actually. Soundtracks are more and more important the louder you get. The louder you get, the harder it is to fix anything on the fly.
6. Interestingly, as an ex-art student myself, I struggle with paintings of musicians generally. I find they don't make good art. There are exceptions but, in the main, I prefer arty photographs to paintings.
7. My 'one' is a Wal that is three weeks short of it's 30th birthday. My new 7-string is a convenient addition to my studio but isn't gigged.
8. Ipod through Skullcandy earbuds. AKG headphones at home. Speakers got ruined in a house move but never got replaced but, if I am honest, music time at home is 99% practice, study and composition not listening.
9. Depends on context, absolutely. Play adifferent bass note and a mode will be something else. We are in a position of absolute power!!!
10. ELO's Out Of The Blue was a favourite when I was about 12. Now the one that I consider one of my top albums of all time is Pat Metheny's 80/81. After that, all the doubles I like are live recordings.
11. On my list of worries, this is not at all near the top The problems really start where your whole GENRE is purloined for aftershave commercials......
12. I got this last month and, whilst I like some of it, overall, I found that it failed to live up to the hype. It's ok, though.
13. I do like it when everyone gets at least one vote!!
14. Last night's rehearsal. Use sh*t amp provided by studio or schlep my own up the stairs for a better sound? A fcuk it. It's only a rehearsal.
15.
Just listened to them all, this is very difficult! I won't go on about who I'm voting for but just wanted to say, Bilbo, ‘Motion Capture’ is ace! I loved the groove from the start and the lead playing along with the trumpet sound is perfect on top! Very impressive
Thanks for the feedback, bro. It's appreciated.
16. I used to love a gatefold sleeve, even better if it was triple etc. The artwork enhanced the experience.
17. Funnily enough, my first working title was Dive, Dive, Dive! 15 entries!! Marvellous!!
18. Not read the thread but, for my money, the problem is that there are more and more musicians fighting for fewer and fewer gigs. I remember when I started going to see live bands, there were several choices every night of the week. Now it feels that there more genres I don't like, more bands I don't want to see and those that I do fancy having a look at are getting less and less exposure. It is also more and more expensive to see stuff that used to be free. That is why we put our Jazz East events on in Felixstowe for nothing; exposure of a vital art form to increase interest outside of the cogniscenti.
19.
jealous!!! Any top 10 tips for budding jazz enthusiasts???
These 10 will get you a long way.... 20. Learn to read music - Iain Ballamy
21. There is nothing 'basic' about learning on a four string. You just learn with what is available to you. Yours is an entirely legitimate starter instrument. I went from 4 string to 7 in one step. I didn't have to go up one string at a time
22. I am in. My idea was based on the fact that the image was seven sections of the same event. So my piece is written in 7:4. There are loads of tricks and musical sleight of hand things going on the fool the ear and, just like the image, it is tripping over itself a little. I tried some new recording procedures as well which got me a better overall sound, I think. Still not at the level of Skol et al but it's fun to learn. 23. I have more than half of them and wouldn't want most of the rest but it is an impressive collection. All legitimate content.
