Just a thought: String vibrates over a magnetic which sends a signal... Now here's were I just had a rather major thought, the wood the pickup is housed in vibrates when you play aswell, when this happens both the string and the pickup are moving so you get a different sound coming out. Different woods would vibrate in different ways/amounts surely. /UtterBollocks?
The entire structure of a solid body electric instrument vibrates when the string is excited. This is because no structure is infinitely rigid or infinitely massive. However, I would suggest that the method of construction is at least, if not more, influential than the mechanical properties of the wood used. When everything else is thrown in (electronics, string, player) the influence of the actual wood is much much less. I essentially made the same point in this post.

CH Guitars has some very reasonably priced bass necks on eBay. I feel a project coming on.... There have been a few favourable mentions on BC regarding their necks but I thought I would ask again for members' experience of these. In other words, are they any good? cheers

My memory is vague so I'm not sure if all Sidewinders were "bass" speakers. Look at the edge of the cone: is it fabric (cloth) or does the paper cone just extend to the edge? If the edge is cloth then it might be OK. Although unlikely for a 15" speaker, if the edge is paper then don't use it as it will just fall to bits.

Result!

Split the Ibanez into parts and sell them on eBay (keeping what you need, eg pickup, bridge etc). Use the funds to buy a used P or J style body to go with your neck.
Road tax should be SCRAPPED!!!
It was already - in the 1930s . Introducing more taxes on low emissions vehicles won't really help. The reality is that motorised transport costs the nation £57.7 billion pa but raises only £48.1 billion in taxes. Of that £48.1 billion, a mere £5.4 billion is earned from Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax). To cover the shortfall would mean that VED revenues would have to nearly triple. I can't see that happening myself. Since motoring costs overall are higher than the revenue generated, it follows that lowering car use will help redress the balance. That's the real reasoning behind road pricing. Higher VED just means that once a year the motorist is hit with a higher bill; we'll still pay it but it won't change behaviour.
the LM4250, which was used in the original MM design.
Wow, that thing will work down to +/-1V supply voltage, which is probably why they chose it. -
1200mA rechargeable AAs are 2 for a quid at Poundland, and you can get holders from Maplins for not a lot.
No use for the peak currents the OP needs. Get everyone to wear cordless headphones? IGMC... The only sensible advice I can offer is to use the most efficient (ie highest sensitivity) speaker you can get your hands on. Remember, each 3dB increase in efficiency halves your power requirement.

Sorry, I don't know. I just think it's good vfm.

I've got a Madarozzo (single) gig bag and overall I would describe it as OK, not great. But since it was only about 30-quid it was very good value. I'd therefore say go for it.

Furry 'nuff . When I built a MM phono pre-amp some years back I used a Nat Semi LM833. I think this is a dual device but in an 8-pin package. Noise performance is excellent (but I run it +/- 9V using 2 batteries). The NE5532 is also a commonly used device for audio circuits. A quick search reveals that the Linear Technology LT1115 looks like the dBs but costs pounds rather than pence. If you are going to use one of these I would also replace all your capacitors for the highest spec you can get/fit. Disclaimer: I am not an EE (but I did work in the audio industry for 20 years). -

You might want to switch that 741 for a decent low noise audio grade op-amp. -
Spotted: Percy Jones playing an Ibanez Groovline

Thanks . I've been looking at some other You Tube vids (BrandX etc) and he is teh awesome. -
Yes, same bass. I assume its a custom shop version made for Percy, like his earlier 5-string fretless Ibanez basses were all custom shop
Thanks for the info. I am not familiar with Percy Jones. I will have to correct this shortcoming... -
Another pic of the great man:
Is that a Grooveline as well? There's no fretless version on the Ibanez website... -
We're slipping dangerously into a "tonewoods" discussion here, which was not the intention of my original question.
Single piece necks have better resonance but nicely quartered timber is more expensive. You can be less fussy with grain orientation when making a laminated neck and they look more interesting, especially with neck through's.
But surely resonance (in a solid body instrument) is not necessarily a good thing?
-
Is there any real advantage of a laminated neck over a single-piece one? I would have thought that a laminated neck would be more stable hence better overall but even manufacturers of quite expensive basses stick to single-piece designs. Thoughts?

The strangest bass part I've ever had to play.

Sounds interesting. Influenced by Nouvelle Vague, perhaps? -
^this. Also, push the cone gently back - do you feel any scraping or resistance to movement? If you do, it indicates a damaged coil in which case a re-cone or replacement is your only option. Are you able to test the speakers individually or with a different amp/system to eliminate other potential problems? Finally, check parameters before fitting non-OE drivers. The cab will have been built to match the original drivers (or vice/versa; Celestion did/does make custom drivers for its big customers).

Sorry to drag up an old thread. Re: the jack recess. Was the decision to keep it black based on the difficulty in stripping the paint in this area? Did you have to re-touch the paint here?
-
Dave, how did you do the dots on the black 'n' maple fretless P?

Another parts build, inspired by recent events.
Although it has appeared elsewhere on the forum, I'm happy to post again. My 58 Bitsa.
That's sort of the reason I started this thread. I've seen lots of fabulous project basses in posted various parts of BC so I thought it would be a good idea to have them all together. It also gives BCers another chance to proudly show their handiwork . Thanks for your contribution.
