I agree with you in most of what you say but look at the video below, that's not what I would call professionally produced by any means. The difference is that Ed really goes the whole mile in showcasing the instrument and giving you a real taste of it's sonic capabilities.
That was a much better demo of a bass. And after you do all the stuff Ed did, then you can do a bit of show-boating.
the money is on THAT side of the pond
Possibly because you can't demo a Warwick anywhere other over here easily? Real shame as I love my Rockbass Corvette and would love to try out a whole bunch of more expensive Warwicks (for my one-bass-to-rule-them-all) without having to travel to the one or two shops in the UK that stock them. But that's a bit off-topic. This type of marketing may be spot on for the US market but over here I think it get the comments seen above! Anyway, anyone seen Guy Pratt demo Ashdown amps? Ever feel like he's doing it a little tongue-in-cheek sometimes? "And this is a volume knob, for turning it up, and down!".
I wonder if this will make you all go out and buy a Warwick Triumph?
Like the Corvette, I'd love to know what this bass actually sounded like. Great guy/player or not, he can't demo for toffee!

God that was awful. I have no idea what the bass is meant to sound like.

Bass Collection SGC Nanyo Japan - 4 string - SOLD
There are people who are more well informed than me but I have to disagree that the 300 series have gold (or brass) harware.
The brochure I linked has gold hardware for the 320 and my 320 has gold hardware too. The 300 series is a different series in a way from the 320 series so it seems the 301/310 series have different specs than the 320. Pretty confusing yeah -
Bass Collection SGC Nanyo Japan - 4 string - SOLD
Mornats replied to Stance's topic in Basses For Sale
I'm sure the 320 series all had gold hardware. My 320 fretless is sen body, gold hardware and ebony fretboard. According to a scan of an old SGC Nanyo brochure (http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/301004_10150354414366555_1518114792_n.jpg if you can see this link), the 460 series had paduak/walnut tops, gold hardware and ebony fretboard. An ebony fretboard on a fretted BC leads me to think this is a 400 series. The brochure I linked isn't exhaustive, in fact I know there's another page to it as I used to have this brochure from the 90s! The 300/310 series wouldn't have had an ebony fretboard nor the see-through red paint effect so I think this may be a 400 series but not the 460 range. Whichever in the range it is, these are beautiful, play well, sound great and weigh nothing. -
A couple of contentious entries here, not crap as such, just disappointing. An Overwater Progress that was just dull, dull, dull. It was the magnolia paint of the bass guitar world. Modern Stingrays. Hate the bland maple necks, find the tone anaemic & a pale facsimile of a once great bass. There, I said it.
Pretty brave to say it giving the rep both of those have but you have say what you feel! I've played a fair few Fenders (in shops and bash bashes to try them out) and I can honestly that 100% of the Mexican ones shouldn't be on sale and only 30% of the American ones are worth even picking up. But those 30% are stunners I'll have to admit.
I learned on a bass which was advertised in Kerrang magazine in the late 80s. I bought it around 1988/1989, the make was Axe. Any body suffer the same pain please let me know....!
I so very much wanted one of those as my very first bass when I was 15. Saw them in Kerrang like yourself and left the page open on my bedroom floor as a hint. My dad, in his great wisdom, took me to Windows in Newcastle and helped my pick out an Aria Pro II ZZB Deluxe instead (used, a bargain at the time, looked very metal and weighed more than me). Not a crap bass by the way, but I was saved from one!

Why have I only just found this thread?! Great stuff everyone, I'm going to go back and read all of the amazing stuff you've written about how you've gotten to your mixes. I voted for Skol's. Out of them all, it fit itself into the right sound space for me. It was there, in front of you, with the right things going on at the sides. One of the defining parts of the track for me was when the guitars came in at 35 seconds in. This needed something special happening to the sound of them and Paul got it spot on. Nice one
Funny you say that because I've just tried Amplitube 3 and had the same experience: really hard not to clip the only bass amp model the free version provides. I had to read the manual to understand all the different stages of volume they have - there's not only input and output volume for the patch, but also input gain which adds to the gain in your audio interface and comes at 6dB by default! They recommend playing with the volumes until you find a good balance leaving input gain at 6dB but I found that was a pain and turning input gain to 2dB made the whole thing work much better for me. I also had to turn on the pad in my interface.
Ah nice one, I suspected there was some gain boost going on in there as Guitar Rig never gave me problems with levels. I'll give that a whirl, cheers

All of the tracks on my Soundcloud page (link in my signature) were recorded using Guitar RIg 4 and more recently Guitar Rig 5 Pro. I've got a gaming PC that use for audio work so there's no lag anywhere and no interference. I've not had problems with hiss and high gain either IIRC. I use the Guitar RIg Session audio interface so maybe this cuts it down? I've always liked Guitar Rig and find it very easy to use and to get good results out of. It's a lot more geared towards guitar than bass though. Only one bass amp (because bassists are not gearheads at all now are we...) but it's ok and does the job. I've also got Ampeg SVX which to be honest I really struggle with. Everything seems overly distorted or very quiet and I just can't get a good recorded sound. Guitar Rig is much better for me, at least until I figure out what I'm doing wrong with Ampeg. I can't compare it to something like a Pod as I've not used one for recording but I bought myself a Zoom B.9 yesterday which I'll try out to see how it fares. I don't think you're wasting your time with it. I find it incredibly useful to go back and apply different settings and amp modelling to an already recorded track of mine. I guess if you're recording using a Pod or other hardware amp modeller then you can't apply different settings post-recording? You can also use Guitar Rig effects on other instruments. I quite often apply Little Reflektor or some of the other effects to piano tracks from Kontakt or to the drums in EZ drummer (to get the same type of reverb on but at a volume/mix that's individual to the instrument).

Yes, cheers mate I took it to "band practice" (which was myself and my guitarist having an improvisation night) and we were both quite impressed by it. It's really easy to switch through the different banks and patches and quickly adjust them too (whilst hitting open string root notes to keep the marathon 20 min songs going!). I do need to spend time setting up my presets now. I need to make sure everything's the same volume as the bypass volume and that all of the EQ settings work well with my Ashdown Touring combo. Still loads to learn but for such a complex device I was surprised at how easy it was to go from buying it to using it in anger at band practice the same evening. Well impressed!

I have a clickable footswitch under my pedal (I checked after reading about it here) but the pedal doesn't go far enough down to click it. I can press it with my fingers though so it's not stiff. I'll have a read up on the fix for it. I've had a bit of a practice through my Superlux headphones and have to say that a) I'm getting a bit of noise (but from my noisy basses) and it still sounds really good - far far better than the Vox Amphones I tried out the other week. I'm going to try it as an audio interface to see how it compares to my Guitar Rig Session and Guitar Rig 5 Pro. It should have better amp modelling (Guitar Rig rocks but is lacking in the bass dept.) but is 16 bit not 24 bit so it'll be interesting to see how these two compare. So, for a £100 it works better than the £100 Vox Amphones (albeit, you have to supply your own headphones but you also get a load of effects and amp modelling). Hopefully it will also blow the socks off a £100 audio interface too. This thing is such the bargain!

Just bought one of these today from PMT in Bristol (£99 in store and a few in stock still - plus they've got one set up in the bass area at the back for you to try). Just figuring it out at the moment but I think I'll really make good use of the, er I don't know what to call it but it's where you can select one "preset" - bank? and then switch modes and have the option to turn on or off any of the individual pedals. I can set up a couple of these and swap between groups of pedals. So some nice subtle compression, slight fuzz maybe and some amp modelling on one and some flanger/wah effects on another

Bah and I just bought a B.9 today! (Happy with it so far though!)

Basschat Competition Bass (13 Guitar Co.) - CONCLUSION!
Mornats replied to Skol303's topic in Build Diaries
Wow, only just saw your build thread mate. Really like the very non-conformist shape you've gone for too and that ebony for the fretboard looks gorgeous. Now, just to make sure I like it when it gets built and then I'll try and rejig the votes and make it look like I won the comp after all muarh har har! Can't wait to see pics! -
It's a typographic error. They've actually been crowned "Britain's Hardest W@nking Band". Explains how they stay in shape. I guess they must switch arms every few weeks or something to maintain symmetry.
Only explanation. Perhaps the PRS should talk to real musicians about "working hard".

Would anyone agree on Warwick and Trace Elliot? Two things make me think of this, one is Stuart Zender and the other is that when I was looking at basses in the early 90s it was all about Warwick and Trace for me. Can't pin down why as my memory fails me a year or two into my Uni days

Notation software advice, what would you recommend?
Mornats replied to Mornats's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, there's a few here for me to try out. I did notice a Sibelius First which is around £90 - still more than I wanted to pay really but perhaps another option...
