1. The very good people at PMT in Bristol let me try out a pair of the Vox Amphones today (these ones: http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/vox-amphones-bass-guitar-monitoring-headphones.html). I tried a Sandberg California through them (hell, why not!) and my impressions aren't all that great. First off though I have to say that the tone was really nice. The Sandberg sounded lovely through them. Sadly though the headphones felt very flimsy. They didn't feel like they would last for long and I felt like I had to handle them very gingerly. They also picked up a lot of hiss. I had the gain turned up all the way and the volume too but even when adjusting these, there's a lot of hiss. The Sandberg has a single coil/humbucker switch but this made no difference unfortunately. It could have been the lights/electronics in the room in the shop but I really wasn't impressed. Also, the overall volume was disappointing. I had to have the gain and volume up to 10 to get anything worth listening to IMO. And at any decent volume (i.e. a volume where you can't hear the strings acoustically) they simply couldn't handle the low frequencies from the E string well. Perhaps the guitar ones are better but I couldn't recommend the bass ones. Great idea, good in a pinch I guess but not worth the £100. I've not tried the Amplug version on a decent set of cans but I'd recommend given that a try before shelling out for the Amphone headphones.
2. It would have to be a bass with a lot of presence... I'll get me coat.
3. At least he doesn't play with his bass high up on his chest!
4. In Bristol, look up Matt Downer (http://www.matthewdowner.com) - his number's on his site. He's my tutor and he's a superb and truly professional player and a really top bloke to boot.
5. Off the back of this, what headphones are you guys using through these devices? Studio references 'phones or hi-fi ones?
6. Cheers! Aha, unless of course you're trying to eliminate the competition... in which case, well played young sir, well played! (only joking!)
7.
Went to enter - found out I already had. Chance of winning.... 1000000000 to one!
I can't remember if I have entered. Does it give you a warning if you've already done so? I don't want to put in a duplicate entry and disqualify myself!
8. Wow, incredible sound from one of those. I did play one in Newcastle a while ago and didn't think it was worth the £400-500 they wanted for it as it felt a bit like a toy but I'm now well impressed with the sound from that.
9.
Yeah, but ............................................... it would have sounded better on vinyl, hence this thread!
Lol. But here's a question. Assuming that you prefer vinyl over CD (please correct me if I'm wrong, or take this as hypothetical), would you sacrifice quality (assuming again that you perceive digital to be a lower quality than analogue) for the chance of being able to instantly find and listen to a self-published artist that you found out you really loved listening to? Or in other words, would you still prefer vinyl over the fantastic experience of finding music by unsigned artists on Soundcloud and the like?
10. I've totally missed most of this discussion (other than this last page) but read a bit of 5imon's posts and went off to listen to the Kit Richardson tracks. So just wanted to say that the bass on You Always Did sounds just perfect to me. I'd love to get my bass sounding like that!
11. That 801 (and HappyJack's Goodfellow) is gorgeous.
12. Yeah, Reaper's EQ is really good. I've used this one too and really liked it. Gets good reviews and ofc is free: http://www.voxengo.com/product/overtonegeq/
13. I've know of the 300, 400, 500 and 600 series but not the 800. Would love to see those pics!
14. Why the hell is any musician watching X Factor? Shame on you all! And to answer the OP, the only thing the judges can hear on the X Factor is the ching-ching of cash from duping gullible idiots out of their money to "vote".
15. The drums on here were done on the Clyde Stubblefield kit from the Funkmasters EZX: http://soundcloud.com/mornats/rift-1 As silddx says, you don't need to do much to get a good sound from them.
16. It's confusing as you can get the Drumkit from Hell EZX for EZDrummer...
17. Nope, EZDrummer is a separate product and is their budget version of Superior Drummer. Drumkit from Hell was their original one that was updated to be Superior Drummer.
18. I use EZ Drummer and love it. Really nice sounds and expandable using their EZX kits. I use the Funkmasters, Classic, Claustrophobic, Twisted, Jazz and Pop/Rock kits. All of the tracks on my soundcloud page (see my signature) are done using EZ Drummer. On one or two, people have thought it was live drums which is a good review of the software! It's really easy to use the drum loops provided and you can create your own but I mainly use the drum loops and edit them if needed. For me the best thing about EZdrummer is that I can have a decent drum track up and running I minutes and I can then get on with writing and recording and can come back and develop the drum track later.
19.
is this just the preamble while you justify to yourself (with our help) buying that P bass you just spotted in the sale forum?
I was after a jazz, do I have to get a P as well?!
20. Dear me, this will be interesting. Cheers Skol!
21. I really really like Walk Away. Those guitars sounds lovely.
22. I'm going to get myself a nice shiny set of flatwound (well, actually GHS Groundwound) strings and I'm just wondering which of my basses I'm going to pop them onto. Choices are my Overwater Contemporary Jazz or my Bass Collection SB320 fretless. I've got roundwounds on my Overwater and nylon wounds on my fretless at the moment. In terms of what I get out of my basses currently, here's a roundup: Overwater: My main recording bass and go-to instrument. Very versatile range of sounds currently but I want it to be different in more ways to my Corvette. I'd lean towards clean/jazzy/funk sounds on this one. Warwick Rockbass Corvette: My rock band bass. Nice hard growly Warwick sounds, brilliant for playing in my band with. Nice and light too! Not a contender for the flats but covers the roundwound hole nicely. Very nicely. Bass Collection SB320 fretless: The one I keep trying to sell but then want to keep every time I show it to someone. Lovely low-end thump, it's a bit special but lacks muaaaarh at the moment. I loved the sound of APAs fretless that had groundwounds on which I played at the South West bass bash. I wouldn't mind some of that but would miss the thumpy-fun nylon wound sound of my fretless. So there you go. It's obviously late and I'm bored and restless hehe.
23. Congratulations mate, a worthy winner! And we want every little detail about your soon to be new bass and of course, every entrant is entitled to a quick play on it yea? Them's the rules? Hehe
24. I should get my a**e in gear, sell my BC and see if this beauty is still here!
25. I played this at the bass bash and really liked it. Did you ever have a go at my black 5 string Bass Collection? I've decided to sell that and buy a cheap jazz you see...
