Whats the best Jazz Bass I can buy for under £300
Mornats replied to matybigfro's topic in Bass Guitars
Farida... and it's a PJ but the overwater/tanglewood thing is worth a look too
I'm a big fan of the Overwater/Tanglewood basses and didn't think to mention this! My Contemporary J4 is superb. -

I've not seen one in a music shop since 1994. One retailer I spoke to mentioned that Warwick needed them to buy quite a bit of stock, plus stock Warwick amps which was too big a demand for the average retailer. If this is true, then it would be great if these restrictions were lifted somewhat so that more places could stock Warwicks, or at least your Rockbasses.

If the Squire jazzes are as good as the precision VM I played then they're really worth trying. -
Well I finally got round to getting the VS-112 extension cab for my Ashdown 220 Touring today. My local PMT had one in on display for £130 and I got it for £120 with a speaker cable thrown in too. I was pretty pleased I'll be trying it out at our next band practice. Oh, and to top it off, I bumped into my favourite local band outside the shop (Three Kings High: http://soundcloud.com/threekingshigh). All in all, a good day out

The Warwick 360° virtual production tour is now online!

Wow, I've just been through your virtual tour and it's really good! It's nice to see what you guys get up to day to day -

I so want to go but I know I'd end up buying a custom shop model that I can't afford. -
I've just sold my iPhone (upgraded to a Galaxy S2 whoop) so went into PMT to grab a Zoom H2N. None in stock but I did notice they had the extension cab for my combo at £130 - bargain! So I may now get the Zoom H1 and the extension cab. So if the quality's roughly the same as bassicinstict said then I'll be very happy!

Now that I did enjoy. Which DVD is this off?

Hi all, I've decided to treat myself to some bass lessons for my birthday in September so I'm looking for a good bass tutor in the Bristol area. Any recommendations? I'm looking for a dedicated bass tutor rather than a guitar tutor who also does bass. Cheers!

I'm crazy for slim necks and find the one on my RB Corvette a nice size. It's thicker than the very slim one on my Overwater but I'm quite fickle about necks so if I like it then ain't a cricket bat by any stretch! And as Mr. W above said, they make them slimmer now so I must have one of those. By the way, does our Warwick representative have a name? Would be nice to not have to call you Mr Warwick!

+1 for Reaper in general although I did something quite different for my attempts at learning YYZ. I found a midi file of the track (not easy to find for most tracks to be fair), split it out into separate channels, popped a suitable virtual instrument onto each track and halved the BPM. And of course with it being virtual instruments being triggered by midi events there's no distortion at all. I can even mute the bassline and er, mangle it myself and have a listen back too.

I've always wanted a Warwick since the early-to-mid 90s when they were the ultimate dream bass for me. I've only just got round to getting one, albeit a Rockbass but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a "proper" Warwick. for £150 used off here I'm not complaining! Great bass by the way too

New Amp Day. Ashdown 550 spyder. Definately broken.
Mornats replied to deanovw's topic in Amps and Cabs
I demoed a few combos and heads when I was buying a combo (all Ashdown). I tried an EB-180 12" and 15", a MAG 500 head and the 220 Touring 12" and the 330 Touring 15" and ended up buying the 220 Touring 12". Compared to the touring series (which has the same preamp as the Spyder) the MAG and EB range, whilst sounding great, just lacked that warmth and grind and that something special that the Touring had. -
Off topic I know but a mate of mine bought an Aerodyne Jazz body off Ebay for around £30 as it was advertised as "the big wooden bit from a guitar".

Our dog comes and leans on my leg when I play too.

I'm looking at getting a handheld recorder to record band practices with and would like some recommendations please. There's a tonne of stuff on the internet about which ones are good (including audio samples) but I'm specifically looking for something that will handle bass particularly well. so I'm looking for something that will record band practice, will record me playing on my amp by myself really well (recording well, not playing well…) and isn't too expensive. Around £150 new is my preference. It's to replace the use of my iPhone for recording band practice so that's the quality jump I'm looking for. An added bonus, and I'm really not sure if I'm barking mad on this one, is whether I'd be able to use it to mic up my bass amp to record a baseline rather than going through my audio interface into Reaper. I'm happy to record it and import it into Reaper rather than use it as an audio interface. Am I a bit nuts expecting to be able to use a handheld recorder for this? I'd love a Shure SM7B but they're out of my price range for the use it would get. I'm not too bothered by video but I guess it would be really nice to be able to record a video of a gig, or even band practice. The Zoom H2, Roland LS-5 and the like are what I'm looking at at the moment. Nice and cheap and I can easily buy one once I trade my iPhone in for an Android.

Just a reminder that we've got a Basschat group on there too so add your tracks! http://soundcloud.com/groups/basschat

They're not all that expensive new these days: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/37170-ashdown-electric-blue-12-180-evo-ii-combo.html#sterling_uk

Some good suggestions here. I think having something separate to the phone is a good idea and that Line 6 Backtrack is the right price, I'll keep an eye out for one I'll have a look into the Zoom Q3HD though as video may be something I'd want to dabble with. Cheers guys!

Hmm, I may actually invest in a Zoom recorder if it's going to be iffy.

I'm currently recording my bass and guitars through a Native Instruments Guitar Rig Session. I'm quite happy with it but then I read a review of a budget Focusrite which praised its inclusion of great quality preamps (this one it was: http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/focusrite-scarlett-2i2-usb-audio-interface--90034 Are the preamps in that thing really worth splashing out on? Is it just snake oil or would I be wowed by it? Just wanted to ask in case I need to pop something onto a Christmas shopping list really.

Mornats replied to deanovw's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yeah they do sound gnarly. Ok, now this isn't the best recording (just recorded with my iPhone placed on a chair at rehearsal) and also the start was me just playing too fast to grab my drummer and guitarist's attention. I didn't expect them to join in! Anyway, ignore the totally dodgy timing at the beginning. (This is an Ashdown 220 Touring combo rather than the Spyder but it's the same pre-amp) http://soundcloud.com/mornats/money-band-rehearsal-with This is my Overwater with bass and treble flat and rolled on to the neck pup by about 1cm. I honestly can't remember the amp's setting other than I'd plugged my active bass into the passive input (it's fine to do that, the manual says so) and whacking the gain up full. I'm tempted to pop some JJ's in there as Walbassist did on his but I'm too scared to open up an amp! -

Congrats on the amp! I got it's little cousin a while back - the 220 Touring combo and just love it. Did you see Walbassist's youtube vid demoing his? Really interesting to sit back and hear the different sounds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8QibZQbxSc -
Is there such a thing as a bass ukulele UNDER £200 ?????
Mornats replied to Wayne Firefly's topic in Bass Guitars
It's a real shame as you can get a normal uke for £70 that sounds quite decent for its price. I'd love a bass uke for they're just silly money in my opinion. As an aside, I've played the same bass uke that K.D. Lang tried out in J.G. Windows in Newcastle (she bought one after doing a gig up there). But as claims to fame go... hehe
