1. Some good advice as always I've always fancied a Trace Elliot amp but weight is an issue. I'm a weedy chap and will have to lug it in and out of a Lancer saloon. I'll pop over to the lightweight amps thread and have a read-up I think.
2. Ha, well would you believe it. A few days after posting this I stumbled across a drummer and guitarist practising at a pub and may be joining them to see how it turns out. Gonna try my little Laney RB1 (15w!) to see how it copes but I can borrow a Laney Linebacker 100w amp if needed. I'll take it from there and see what I end up needing! Got my eye on a few EB-180s on Ebay but saw this for £229 new which is a bargain: http://www.kennysmusic.co.uk/backline/bass-amps/ashdown-electric-blue-12180-bass-combo.html.
3. Overall, some very nice sounds. The volume on the P only using the pick is huge. My P pup is quite a beast (on my Overwater Contemporary J) too. I can hear a distinct difference between the J, P and JP tracks. The JP sounds are my favourite out of the lot. Check the height of the A string, it may just be a little too high from the pickups. My E string is around 0.5 - 1mm slightly too low after my last setup and the volume difference is noticeable. Not by much and I can compensate easily on the E string - perhaps less so if it were my A string. I should do a test of mine too to compare my active bass with your passive.
4. Dammit I want a bongo now.
5. Have a peek at http://www.vGuitarLessons.com. It starts with the very basics (i.e. tuning your guitar) but might be an ok place to start.
6. It helped that I went to college with Steve who used to be the manager in the Metro Centre store but I'm sure I only mentioned that after I'd bought the bass. Good chaps tho. Bought a ukulele from them and got a good discount (it's a black flying V one, sad but also quite cool at the same time).
7. DV247 have the MiBass combos listed but no pics or prices as yet. Here's the one I'm interested in (depending on price of course): http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ashdown-mi12-bass-guitar-speaker-cabinet--96832
8. I've played pretty much every bass in PMT in Bristol and the only comment I got from the staff was to say that I should ask them to get the basses down off the wall for me in case I bash one. I thought this was a fair comment. Mind you, I must have tried about £5k worth of basses before they said this! JG Windows in Newcastle were good. I tried a few basses in there and asked if I could try the Fender American Jazz. I told them it was out of my budget but I wanted to try it for comparison and they were. I bought my Dean in Windows in Metro Centre and the guy was great. I told him I'd not played in 17 years so he let me get a feel for some basses then played a few for me so I could get an idea of their sound. Telling a potential customer that they can't try any more basses is like Amazon only letting you look at 3 products before kicking you off the site because they want to save bandwidth. It sucks and they don't deserve your sale.
9. Mine was an Aria Pro II ZZB Deluxe that my parents bought me second hand when I was 16. It was an explorer shape and looked awesome. Not quite so awesome when it was being held by a skinny 16 year old with sensible hair and glasses.
10. Cheers guys. Worst case scenario is that I get a decent jam out of it so all good!
11. Just been for a beer after work with my bro and his missus in a pub 5 mins walk from my house. Sat in the beer garden and heard a band practising in the room at the back but I could only hear drums and a guitar. I'd been saying to my bro that I should pop in a see if they need a bassist and eventually I did just that. Turns out that they'd been saying earlier that they needed a bass player! So, I may end up doing some practice sessions at least. It'll be the first time playing in a band in nearly 18 years for me so I hope it works out . At the very least we'll have a couple of practise sessions (which would be nice) even if it doesn't work out. Funny how things work out eh?
12. Cheers guys, I hoped that I'd get some sensible advice, I'll definitely wait. I'd love a MarkBass setup for the weight of them so best get saving just in case I need one.
13. Someone please de-GAS me... I'm constantly looking around for a decent head/cab or combo but I really don't think I need one. I'm not gigging, I'm not in a band and I primarily record stuff using a Guitar Rig Session interface and Guitar Rig amp software. Somehow I just feel like I need an amp. I do have a 15w practice amp which is fine for noodling around on but I'd never be able to do a band practice or gig with it (if I ever did start playing live). I've got my eye on an Ashdown EB12-180 and was thinking of buying new so that's around £270 or so. Ideally I'd trade in my Bass Collection SB315 for one (with some cash, depending on trade-in value). Trouble is, without actually being in a band or gigging I have no idea of my requirements. Best to leave it until I know what I need?
14. Christ on a bike that's nice. If it were fretted I'd sell my SB315 and my Dean to grab that. Alas I've already got an SB320 fretless so have a bump instead.
15. Sounds like a great idea, I'd be up for having a go.
16. That was pretty cool. It wouldn't have been quite the same watching someone do that with Absynth!
17. Nice looking bass. Pic 3 is great
18. My Bass Collection 5-string is strung E-C and I had a new brass nut custom made to cater for the E-C gauge (100 - 30 I think it is). However I don't think that doing this solves the weak tone on the high C, the bass is simply set up properly for the string gauge. My high C is a bit weak compared to the other strings but nothing I've considered to be an issue. One caveat here is that I actually rarely play the fiver and even when I do I tend not to stray up to the C much anyway.
19. What threw me off is that the two eq pots and the pan all have centre indents.
20. Oh, and as this is a random thread, SteveO - I've actually been to Honefoss which I noticed you're from (apologies for missing the accents off that). I've got a few mates who live there.
21. I'm from Northumberland and now (spookily) also live in Bristol and I'm afraid I've never heard it pronounced like bass (i.e. crass), it's always been base either up North or doon here. I am, however, with you on "scon". All the way. And whilst I'm at it, it's Baff not Barth when referring to Bath. And if someone asks if I'm from Newcarsel, I say no, I'm from Newcassle.
22. Not heard anything yet about the fretless ones except that they are intending to do some. Just checked their Facebook page and nothing on there. I know that Chris May's in Frankfurt right now for Musikmesse so if he's going to announce anything soon that would be a likely place to do it. By the way, the "issue" I mentioned a few posts up isn't actually an issue... I got my knobs mixed up.
23. I think I may have solved my issue too. I tried lowering the P pickup and raising the J pickup. At first, when changing the pan knob it seemed to make no difference. However, when I turned the bass knob, it was much louder when I turned it down. So I now think I've just been a knob myself and have mistaken the bass knob for the pan knob. So, here's what I thought the knobs did (from neck to jack socket in order): Volume - Bass - Treble - Pan. However, it now seems that it's: Volume - Pan - Treble - Bass. I can't believe I made that mistake but to be honest, I've just been turning the knobs until I get the sound I want so never thought about the possibility that I'd gotten them mixed up. Anyway, I'm about to undo the changes I made and see if that helps... oh, and glad you got yours sorted Barkin. As an aside, I've just had mine setup with a really nice low action and it's just a beauty to play, even better than when I first got it. Just as good, if not better than the Fender American Jazz that I played last year (which was the best bass I've ever had a go on).
24.
All I can add is; Picato make their own and, I do believe, Overwater strings AFAIK DR make their own, too.
I'd have put my money on GHS making the Overwater strings. I put some GHS Bass Boomers on my five string and when I bought my Overwater bass I was surprised to find that the strings felt and sounded very much alike, both when new and dulled after a few months. They could just be similar sounding and feeling though.
25. Way back in Uni I was asked to join a band and thought I'd give it a go. The only problem was that the first gig was booked for a week's time and I hadn't heard any of the (original) songs. So we practiced all day and night for a week. The gig turned out quite well but I had to play it with a plaster on my finger with a piece of card on top and all wrapped up in masking tape. The blister that had formed underneath my burst blister had also burst and this was the only way I could put any pressure on the strings.
