1. What ikay said.
2. I tried the set of LaBellas that work really well on my J on my P and it didn't do it for me - but the Chromes make it sound better than it ever has. I know it can be expensive, but if you can, I think it's worth trying different brands of flats because they do have different characteristics and some seem to suit some basses better than others (although what works with what is, of course, entirely subjective )
3. Yup - not surprised it was snapped up - gorgeous bass. I was sorely tempted - thank God it's gone!

NBD!

I hope that you'll be very happy together. I've had mine for a couple of years and still love playing it. I stuck Wizard 84s in it earlier this year to get a bit more of a bottom end thump, but there's certainly nothing wrong with these basses as they come. Enjoy.
5. I've had this 2x10 combo for just over 18 months and am very happy with it. I found it loud enough with two guitars and drums for rehearsal, but I got a 2x10 extension cab to give me a bit more headroom at gigs (and it also helps to have the extra height) although usually I use a DI into the PA as well so it's just there as a monitor. Certainly worth looking around for one second hand - if you're lucky you might be able to get the combo AND a cab for less than £400.

9. Thanks to everyone for your advice and information. I went in and gave it a play - seemed fine and in decent nick, but I couldn't knock them down to less then £140 so I decided to leave it (for now at least ). The bottom line is that I don't really NEED another bass at the moment, but I'm certainly interested in trying out the 5 string experience at some point even if, like BottomE, all my favourite players are pretty much exclusively in the 4 string camp. The grass is always greener isn't it?
10. Thanks for that, Jennifer - good to know.
11. OK - probably just a hanger - imagine how many basses you could fit in a hangar?
12. All very useful information - thank you very much. You can see how this going to play out, can't you? I might as well order that extra Hercules wall hangar now. Bah!
13. Senor is one of my fave Dylan songs (well, at least one of my faves off Street Legal ). I've just joined a Faces tribute band and, although my style is quite melodic anyway, I find that Ronnie Lane's lines often leave behind any notion of rhythmic support of the song in place of a rather dubious harmonic exploration (presumptious, moi?). I put this down to the fact that the band were absolutely plastered most of the time anyway, so I'm trying to retain some of the sense of his harmonic playing while pinning down the songs a little more firmly. +1 for the shout out for Mark Andes - great work on The Family That Plays Together too.
14. I'm feeling the warm embrace of the tribe.
15. I spotted a 5 string Squier Precision in my local pawn shop yesterday. Looked rather pretty with a tort pickguard. I'm a 4 string guy (thus far) but I have some interest in checking out the 5ver world. My understanding of this model is that the pickups are a bit 'meh' and the problem is that they are standard 4 string pick ups so there's no possibilty of replacing with other 5 string p/ups without some additional routing. Price is £150. Worth grabbing anyway? I really don't need it for either of the bands I play in, but it looks nice. GAS is a dismal affliction, isn't it? Any advice appreciated.
16. BA slapped 'Fragile' stickers on my case when I flew with them last month. But I agree that there's no harm in doing your own thing if you're worried that a budget airline might fail to observe that an instrument-shaped case might contain something that would benefit from some gentle treatment. Having said that, I can't imagine that any of you would check any flightcased instrument into the hold unless you were confident that it could withstand a certain amount of maltreatment. Hiscox + pants round the neck - you're laughing.
17. It started with the La Bella FS set on the Jazz replacing the DR Sunbeams which went onto the fretless before they were, in turn, replaced with TI flats. Sorted - very nice - both basses sounding fantastic. I'd stuck with the DR Lo-Riders on the P for a while, but still wasn't getting the sound I was after, so I switched to D'Addario Chromes last week. Took me a couple of days to get used to the stiffer strings, but - oh joy - it now sounds unbelievably great. I can't put it down. I know there's a certain amount of scepticism about the enthusiasm for flats espoused by some members on these boards and, of course, I appreciate that only rounds will deliver the tone that some of you guys are after. But after only using rounds for the last 30 years of on/off playing I have to say that flats have been an absolute revelation and, for me at least, it's a flat, flat, flat, flat, flat, flat world.
18.
this is making me feel extremley old - owing to the fact that i saw them at Hull Uni in 1980 and jolly good they were too SECTOR 27 - (Jo Burt on fretless)
Saw them at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1980 supporting The Police. Can't remember what they sounded like, but they were all wearing long white lab coats which made them look like a small convention of New Wave dentists.
19. +1 for Mo Foster - particularly enjoy his playing on Scott Walker's songs on Nite Flights. Also Alan Spenner with Roxy Music - at his best on Manifesto IMO
20. Wow - Happy Jack's feedback is so glowing it's visible from space. And quite rightly so. Just picked up a Radial Tonebone Bassbone from him. Effortlessly straightforward deal. What a very nice bloke. Thanks Jack.

Did get mentioned in a review a couple of years ago, decent review of the band but it also said '.. but why oh why was the lead guitarist (I was playing bass!) dressed like a modern day Pierrot?'. I wore a black and white outfit with a beret and a B&W Venetian mask - in a South African Zulu funk band
No pics, no Pierrot...
