1.
It really, really does. Well, if you read the rest of my post then you'll see how I qualified that statement. There's no magic formula and swapping tunes around to try and fit said mythical magic formula will only serve to annoy your band mates. Settle on a setlist in the order you like. It won't be the way your band mates like and it won't be the order that anyone in your audiences would chose either. It's down to one person to select/call the tunes and a lot of time is wasted by people in bands endlessly discussing whether tune A should be before or after tune B. It happens in every band I've ever been in and I suspect from the replies here it happens in every band that I haven't been in too.
Yes, I do take your point, but I also think that if you've decided on a selection of songs that you - as a band - are all happy with, it's worth taking time to put them together in an order that makes some kind of narrative and/or dynamic sense. It's not rocket science, but it does have an effect on how the audience perceives you in your magnificent totality
  2.
Just got in from a cracking gig and we played a couple of new tunes. Dilema for new songs is where to put them as you don't know how well they will go down.
Like any young children being taken outside for the first time, wrap then up well - stick each one between a couple of corkers that you know are going to go down well.
  3.
IMO play your best song last, your second best song first and work from there.
But if you're frontloading your set with all your 'worst' songs (not that you should be playing any of those, obviously) there ain't gonna be any punters still around to hear your 'best' songs. Or am I missing something here? Yes, what I am missing is that I misread your post. I am an idiot and what you say makes perfect sense. Doh! It's late and I really should finish this lager and go to bed
  4.
Lozz196 Posted Yesterday, 09:28 PM The one thing I`ve always fought virtually all the bands I`ve been in on this aspect is don`t leave all the best songs til last - grab the audience straight off, from the word go, then keep `em there. Opener has to instantly get them, next has to keep them there, and then periodically insert your better numbers along the way. If you wait til the end of the set for all your best songs, in my view you`ve already lost the audience. Think of it like a range of moutains, with peaks and dips, and not like an uphill slope.
This is spot on - exactly my philosophy on putting a set list together.
It deosn't matter what order you play them in.
It really, really does.
  5.
I want to sound like a bastardised chimaera - is there a book/cd? ficelles
As previously suggested, apparently this will do the trick (with the appropriate vintage chimaera pick). 6. Totally, totally brilliant. Although, FWIW, the phrases "plays like butter/buttah" and "tubey goodness" generally make me want to vomit copiously through the letterbox of whoever uses them. My challenge to you BCers out there is to use "Get that garnish on the plate - now" in a credible bass context. Bah!
  7. Put a pair of 84s in my Squier CV Jazz earlier this year. Very happy with them - they've given the bass a more focused and defined bottom end (the set of Labella 760FS flats helps too ) Thinking about sticking some 74s in the fretless...
  8. Bought an EHX Bass Micro Synth off Chris. Sealed the deal on Sunday night, package arrived Tuesday morning - all exactly as described. Very good comms - a top BassChatter to do business with.

  10. Thanks for sharing - much appreciated!
  11.
Not sure about the John McLaughlin comment though. Early on (i.e. the Extrapolation album) he definitely swung, and if his rythmic feel changed later on it was probably a stylistic choice rather than a deficiency.
Ditto his playing with Miles Davis on 'Jack Johnson' - swing city!
  12. Fender American Deluxe Precision has 21 frets. Works for me. I suggest you give one a go (even though it doesn't have the thinnest of necks it's still very playable).
  13.
"Is it the Pork or the lamb...? you've got to have a system" (Harry Hill says so)
I like the pork and I like the lamb, but which is best?
  14. Bought a Hiscox case from Floyd - mint condition as advertised. Good, clear comms - really nice guy to deal with - enjoyed meeting him when I went to pick the case up. Cheers mate.
  15. Well, not exactly. But having gone to see One Man, Two Guvnors at the National Theatre in London tonight - a play which features both Mr Corden and an onstage band - I was particularly impressed by Richard Coughlan who was playing upright and electric bass. Spot on the money. Incidentally, his Squier CV P sounded and looked great - very nice for a play set in 1963. And it was very funny (the play, not his playing).
  16. Where are you? Interested in one of the cases if it's not too much of a schlep...

Have a bump on me. I bought an identical Am Dlx P back in January and it's an absolute joy to play. Great price for a great bass.
  18.
I can see this is going to be a long list of all the string makes.
In which case can I be the first to say........TI flats. Maybe not the 'classic' fretless sound that worn in DR Sunbeams gave me, but more thump, and still very funky and responsive (and kinder to the rosewood board).
  19.
My favourite Bee Gee is the one that looks like Aragorn, and my favourite song is Stiffy Cocky Pudding.
Any tips on getting a mouthful of coffee out of a computer keyboard?
  20. Bought a defretted MIM jazz neck off Ju - couldn't have been more straightforward. Good, clear communications. Very speedy delivery. Lovely neck. Top bloke to do business with.
  21.
I've flown to Germany and back a few times with my bass and I've had no issues at all. I packed the case out with my pants to give the bass a snug fit :-D Wrapped the case a few times in gaffer in 3 spots. Flight case is a Gator or SKB, I can't remember. Cost about £80.
Well that's reassuring. I've got an SKB hard case, so I'll pad it out with bubble wrap, underwear (at least it'll be clean on the way out!) and whatever. Do you just check the case as hold luggage at the check-in desk? It certainly sounds like a lot less hassle than taking the bass to pieces and putting it back together again. Thanks.
  22. I need to travel with my bass to Germany in a couple of months time and I wondered if anyone had any experience of/views on the option of removing the neck and stowing the (well wrapped) neck and body in a suitcase with the rest of my stuff. I won't be playing until 36 hours after I arrive which I would hope would give the neck time to settle down once reattached.
