What would the specs and design be of your dream custom bass?
stewblack replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I am too dull for this thread My ultimate dream bass would, in all likelihood, look and play exactly like my Bass Collection Profile.- 30 replies

Saw a 'Sa uier' advertised there recently. Actually a very good price.

I've had this issue with every envelope / auto wah I've ever tried (to a greater or lesser extent). My favourite now is the Future Impact synth pedal. Because you essentially create your own effect from scratch, I can tailor it to suit my playing style strings, pick ups, etc. Only problem is stopping once the perfect sound is achieved. The FI offers so many possibilities, in the hands of an addict who has zero conception of the word 'enough', its impossible not to just keep on until my bass sounds like a war in space.

Look forward to your review.

Interesting isn't it? I have been tugging away at the thick string since coming over from the dark side back in the very early 80s. It's only the last year or so I've begun to discover that I prefer some necks over others. Probably only because of Basschat.

Oh I love the colour. Nice work!

£200 on FB if you're interested...

I seem to have a thing for Joyo pedals. Lots of different effects have come and gone over the years, but looking at the ones which have stuck, there's a fair proportion of Joyo not going anywhere. Most recently I acquired a tiny Orange Juice from the Ironman range and it's great. Any Basschatters use any other of these mini pedals? Any you'd recommend?

What do you get if you cross an Elf with a Midget?
stewblack replied to stewblack's topic in Amps and Cabs
Gave the Elf its first outing today at a rehearsal. Put it on top of my Ashdown 1X12. Blew me away. I'll gig it without hesitation. Wonderful tone, and as much oomph as any bass player could wish for. Set it up for a TE scoop at it did what I wanted, underpinning the sound with big fat bass and dancing lightly over the top. Blessed with a singer who has a a really good ear. Said she liked it, but she's particularly partial to a punchy midrange bass sound. So I reversed the tone pots (BMT: quarter to, quarter past, quarter to) and just an amazing sound. So good. Used the P with @KiOgontone switch fitted and that was a revelation. It's quite a varied set and some lines need to ring out while others need to be smooth. One click of this cunning device and... perfection. I know I have more kit than anyone could ever need or use, especially now my health limits me to very occasional performances, but whatever I use I ask myself, if this was all I had would I be content to gig with it week in week out. This set up is an emphatic yes. -
Used to go out with a girl from the Isle of Wight. Back when before cameras on the roads. Had a Transam tried to race me back home to Somerset this one Sunday evening. Stayed ahead of him all the way. In a Ford Fiesta 950cc. And by the way, the tortillas weren't stale as it turns out.

Agree with all you say @Baloney Balderdash I like the Sound series for their 3 eq section but I guess something has to give if you want to make things tiny. The California is my favourite, man does that get filthy.

A bass is part of the violin family.

Brilliant! Bit of cheese, sriracha sauce?

There's some stale coop tortilla chips on the window ledge.

Well now there is a question. 🤔 How do I quantify 100 quids worth of difference? The neck is different, not much, but enough to feel different. That might be a bonus for you but could just as easily be a detraction. The pick up is definitely different in the Profile. Better. I think it's a bit lighter. Now the thing is, Bruce was actively involved in the design of his sig, I don't know how much, if at all that applies to the others...

Why am I being quoted into this insanity.? I'm happy sitting in my monthly New Harley Benton corner.

Picked up a lovely little pedal from our own dannybuoy this week. It's a Joyo Orange Juice and this thing is tiny! Nicely designed with a flip cover protecting the controls against accidental misadjustment. Twin LEDs shine through the cover to back light the logo, and for those who care about the aesthetics it looks pretty cool. What does it do? I intend to use it instead of the American Sound on one of my boards because it takes up much less room. It lacks the three eq buttons on the AS, but the single tone control is pretty responsive. Like the AS it has level, voice and drive controls. Voice and drive both increase the volume and both break up the signal. The voice delivers a brighter, lighter distortion while the drive is thicker, richer. I achieved a wide variety of different effects blending these two, from a slight colouring of my tone to a full, richly filthy overdrive. In between it compressed and thickened the sound, producing a passable impression of an old tube amp. This will be an always on for me, I don't really play much heavy stuff these days, but I like to scuff up the clean sound in my soul band. Being a gear whore, I have various options to achieve this, but none this small, and none this cute.

Something very similar happened to me years ago with an Aria from the 80s. You could speak into the pick up and it would come through the amp. Not long after the pick up failed altogether. I know nothing about the inner workings, but had a trusty tech who ordered replacement from Kent Armstrong. I'd say it was better than the original.

Dan advertised a pedal at about a tenner cheaper than the shop price and with free delivery. He claimed it was as good as new. When you see this guy make a statement in an ad, take it from me he is not kidding. The box was like new, the packaging like new and the pedal still had those little bits of plastic on it. Great Basschatter, deal with absolute confidence.

I don't know how to describe necks very well. Wonder if we have any others in common I could compare it with? It ain't heavy. 8lb ish, just over 3.6kg on the kitchen scales. I have an old jazz of theirs which tests the suspension of the average family saloon, this is totally different. I wonder if the horror stories associated with the brand originate with their early models.

Baseball bat. C profile. Slim. D profile. Chunky. I surely can't be alone in wondering how all these adjectives translate in the real world . I have now grasped that Jazz necks and Precision necks enjoy a 4mm difference at the nut end. And while I can happily play either I prefer the wider one. Is there an idiots guide to necks?
-
My only concern is this. What conditions are they made under.

You'd have to either buy out the rest of the syndicate or set up another five similar syndicates.

I have a Talman 4 string and I love it. None of the cons you've listed worry me - and to be fair you don't see them as huge cons yourself, just minor improvements you're content to do yourself. However neck dive is an automatic no for me on any bass. I hate it. I added a strap button at the neck plate on a T Bird years ago, and have to say it worked just fine. Congrats on your new bass. More evidence that no one needs to spend silly money on an instrument these days.
